I have an '87 convertible IROC sitting in my barn just waiting to be restored to it's former glory. Was my baby brothers car that he bought new, and proudly drove around for years, until the trans went out, and due to health problems, he couldn't afford to fix. He let it sit in his driveway and let it pretty much rot away in the weather until his death at 43, 11 years ago. I was tempted to just call a scrap yard to come get it, but thought that wouldn't be doing right by my brother, so I moved it to my house, and stuffed it in the corner of my old barn, telling myself that one day I would restore it. At 63, and stepping into retirement at the end of the year, I see this as one of the projects I'll do to keep me from sitting on the couch all day. Sure, I'll spend way more money and time than it will ever be worth, but I'm sure my brother will be smiling down upon me when he sees his car, rolling down the road again, shiny as the day that he bought it.

Nothing from the 80's could be called a muscle car other than maybe the 3.8 litre V6 Turbo Buick's...particularly the 87 GNX. These were decent looking cars but offered no real performance. Most of the 70's and the whole decade of the 80's sucked for gearheads who wanted more than just basic transportation. Wasn't until the early to mid 90's when Detroit finally figured out how to make real power while still complying with smog laws

Great video. Iroc-z's are my favorite cars as I graduated HS in 1988 so I remember a lot of this! Unfortunately many Irocs were sold with the base 4bbl and that lowly L03 170 hp motor which gave the irocs a bad name on the streets. It was good for marketing and giving people options like the 1960's but hurt the performance image. The one thing Ford did right was to give the Mustang GT and LX 5.0 their top dog motor thus making them all "fast". All Iroc's should have came with TPI motors only IMO
@rogermurph1017 жыл бұрын
Donnis Bagby I graduated in 87, so these were dream cars right out of high school. Must be a circumstance of geography, but I've never seen an IROC without a TPI motor. Oh yea, the Nova's, lots of Nova's. Some of them did a very nice job back then, and some of those guys do restoration today. Performance tip: If you have one with a TPI motor, (temporarily) take out the air filters and remove those four silly, plastic restrictor plates so your engine can breathe. Then go to a shop and have them replace the muffler with one that actually lets a reasonable amount of exhaust flow through it (so you exhaust pressure equalizes more with the intake pressure, preventing you from floating a valve). At this point you might as well spend around $30 on some performance air filters. I'm not sure how many horsepower this will gain you (I'm guessing from 15-30, which isn't bad for a 210-245 HP motor), but I was able to do 0-60 in a bit over 5.5 seconds and a quarter mile at about 14.2 @ 101 MPH after cooling the intake with a couple bags of ice. This was a 1989 Iroc with a 350, 700R4 auto, 255 ZR-16 Michelin XGT tires, and a 2.77(!) rear axle.
@boxfancb5 ай бұрын
I saw that intake mod on a magazine once and did it, switched to K&N filters and put an airfoil on the throtle body. Also went with eldelbrock tubular set and new cat back ending with a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler. It kept things quiet but there was a lot of noise and smoke coming from the tires👍

I guess things came full circle If you are wondering, I am not giving up on the trans am, as much as my family thinks I am, I just wanted a different car for a different reason. The Pontiac is the show car now and the iroc will be the daily/fun street racer. I dumped so much money into making the Pontiac restored and beautiful that I am afraid to even drive it when it's ready. The iroc is more of a traditional project car that I will have fun with and can make a racer with performance mods that would not be worth it on the trans am. Plus I get the bonus of pretty much everything fitting on both cars.

I built that engine & have run it in one of my drag boats. I like the handling of this car but needs more power. I want to leave the oem 86 engine alone since this car has 69,000 original miles I'll upload photos as I go... I've has 2 68 rs/SS big block camaros, 1 68 ss camaro and a 74 rs camaro before playing with my any vetted I've owned until now. You failed to mention a very important point. I know this to be true as i owned one. Because Chevy dropped out of IROC at the end of 1989, there were a very few, around 6000, 1990 5.7 IROC z28 produced in 1989. This unit was only available without the split roof and only came with the 4 speed hydromatic transmission. The Corvette type L98 engine produced 245 base HP and 345# FT Torque. Some have said the the HP rating was understated, as it had a top speed of about 150 MPH, and could do 0 to 60 in 5.8 seconds. This car was a screamer, and could beat many later model 1990's era Z28 Camaros with more HP off the line, but would loss to them on the high end. When I sold my unit with 148K on the clock it was still running 0 to 60 between 5.8 and 6.0 seconds.

Another trick on 5.0 TPI engines was to bypass the throttlebody's coolant with a piece of conduit for summer months or warm climate states. It really helped only in town or in traffic, stop-n-go kind traffic, as it would lower the air temperature going into the intake.

Yes I do like the IROC-Z. But in 1989 I bought a plane Jane 1986 305 H, 700R4 equipped Camaro with T-Tops, pwr. windows ect. I liked it a lot and drove it from the 33K miles when I bought it to 165K miles in 2000. Since I wasn't impressed with too many cars in 2000 I decided to refurbish my 86. Chevy had a "Camaro Conversion Kit" for the 305 H cars and that's what I put in it. After new paint and interior factory cloth in went the "Kit". A ZZ4, 5.7 liter V8 with 355 hp., 405 lb. torque, up grades for the transmission, suspension, and a duel cat 3 inch Flow Master exhaust. I added several other upgrades - 145mhp speedo head from Chevy, Z28 gauge cluster, Moog Cargo Coils to handle the "Camaro Squat" - Z28 sway bars, custom sub frame connectors, Auburn Pro limited slip rear with 3:27 gears. The 700R4 still wasn't strong enough so I had it customized to fully hydraulic and Kevlar bands with a Corvette torque converter at a specialty shop here in Vegas. I increased the wheel size to 16 inch and low profile Goodyear's. There are still small upgrades I did all over the car, Map lights form a 2000, door map pockets, sound system, even a Reese trailer hitch. I call it my "Honda tow hitch". With the Edelbrock 850 spread bore Carburetor it will do 135 mph before it starts to fly off the ground (fast enough for me) and a 13.6 @ 122 mph in the 1/4 mile. It took runner up at the Super Chevy Show in 2000 here in Vegas and after 110 K miles on the new engine it still has 65 psi oil pressure and runs and handles like new. I had a lot of fun with it and surprised a number of 5.0 Mustangs with it. Now it mostly sits in the garage since 2008 when I bought my first Highlander AWD. I drive my "Grandpa Mobile" 2013 Highlander Limited AWD now to haul all the grandkids around. If I do put it back on the road I think I'll do a brake upgrade to it to help it stop better. But I'll never sell it - too many memories to let it go. It may not be an IROC or Z28 but it is a ZZ4.

I turned my TPI into a 410hp engine with just heads, cam, intake manifold, exhaust and a tune. and still has plenty of power off idle so it's still a street car. peak power at 5761rpm. Downgraded? I respectfully disagree. The 90s Fbodies got probably the best iteration of third gen F-body interior, which I considered to be pretty spartan and plain, given the beautiful exterior of these cars. GM obviously blew all of their development money on the sleek sheetmetal. Mustangs had a better interior 87 and later, but I still envied the sleeker exterior of GM's ponycars.

@4-LOW7 жыл бұрын
Those arguments are completely irrelevant. Ford made a 302 and a 351 during this time. GM had a 305 and a 350. Either company could put either of their V8s into these cars. What we got is what they chose to bring to market. So we must compare what we had. I'm a Ford guy, but Ford was always way behind GM with these cars. In 1993, the Camaro got 275 HP and soon thereafter 285 HP with their base V8 Camaro. The base Ford V8 Mustang didn't reach those levels until 2005. Mustang fans have always watched Ford play catch-up a decade behind GM. It's sad.
