I still love watching their live TEDx performance of their song. The audience of motivational speaker fans, company execs, and aspiring millionaires all sat together at 8 am to hear brilliant researchers and bestselling authors talk. But instead, this jetlagged audience of middle-aged people - many of whom haven't even heard of They Might Be Giants - listen to a song about how every second of every day brings them ever-closer towards their inevitable end. All applause felt awkward and obligatory. John and John knew exactly what they were doing. They must have relished every moment of it.

The classic lineup of 2 Johns and 3 Dans. Before Miller left the band around 2006 or 07 and was replaced by the great Marty Beller. He's been an amazing drummer, but it is sad we don't have that coincidence anymore of everyone in the band having one of two names

@Ben Phillips I remember about that because he left the band right before my first concert in 2006, but I'd been following them since 2002. Not a silly thing to say at all. Not only is it full of truth, it's a profoundly direct and forceful statement about the one undeniable truth of life. It spares nothing in its straightforward delivery, and its aggressively steadfast power asserts the truth of mortality with unwavering certainty. After downloading as many random songs from an illegal download site that my dial-up internet would allow (mp3shits dot com I believe it was... Gosh what brain cell remembered that!?), for some reason, with this one included I'd burned a disc mixtape for myself. I remember listening to this alone at night and thinking I was being really deep and meaningful. The world was not ready for teenage me. Over 15 years later I still wonder, was I really that silly? When I first heard this song, it was just on the album without much context, so the obvious message to me was just that-- obvious. "Yeah, it's true, we've been on this planet for longer with every passing moment," it seemed like pretty simple logic. But now I see everyone say how it reflects how we're only "on this Earth" for a limited time, and we're all coming closer to death, mortality or whatever... but it still just doesn't change for me, and I'm not sure why. I guess I'm just not that afraid of death. I'm young. I've still got relatively a lot of time. Time itself is relative. Why be scared of something that's inevitable?
