Not having kids was the key to it. He was divorced from his first wife when he served and the second one just died of natural causes later on. @@laurikotivuori1585 as a native Austinite, I realized he lived in a part of town that was the only place blacks could own property, pre-civil rights movement. The 926 phone numbers in town were the places 90% of blacks owned properties. If you were a black in NW Austin where I lived as a kid in the 1970’s, And as far as I know, he never had air conditioning installed in his home, not even window units. He lived every summer day and night until powers that be had it installed and he suffered pneumonia after remodeling of his home at 110-111. He was used to natural air before then.

Totally right about that, worked for 50 cents a day. Below poverty level today for sure. But he didn’t go hungry as far as I know. His generation was tough! They made the most out of what little they had. And as a black man that didn’t complain and worked hard, he had to take it in stride even more. They didn’t have equal rights back then and in the back of the line. He lived in east Austin because that’s the only place blacks could own properties back then.
