Oldham was a great place back in the 1980s. A great social scene, pubs, clubs, restaurants etc. A very much working class town, proud too! The Tories got into power in 1979, and that started te decline. Working men and women made redundant and then onto the dole queues for literally years. Going through into the 90s and the Labour council allowed the rot to continue. What you see today is a sad reflection on the town. Glad I'm old enough to remember nights out in Oldham in the 80s.

The place has changed quite a bit since I last visited, which was about 28 years ago. I used to live in Oldham when I was a kid we lived just down the road from the Greenacres Inn with the cemetery facing. Mum used to take us kids shopping with her to the town center, it was our day out and if we behaved we were always treated to a new Dinky or Corgi toy car from the little toy shop we new and loved so well. I recognized one of the streets you walked down, my old man used to work for a Taxi firm by the name of Eagle Jem Taxis, their office was on the right hand corner as you were walking down. We also used to go into Woolworths when we were there on a Saturday, which was just across the road and a little farther up and sadly now long gone as are many places including Gloddick Baths which we used to go to a lot as kids. We moved away from Oldham when I was around 11 years old, but I have many memories including playing at a place called the Manor flats which, then, was a wide expanse of open fields. There used to be an old Victorian tip there back in the day, and it became a favorite place to go dig up old bottles and such I collected quite the number over a period of time. I spent many hours down there with my little brother it was great fun and we'd always hurry home to clean everything up with a big bucket of hot soapy water. I'm now 58 years old, and those days seem so very long ago but, the memories are still as fresh as ever. Keep up the great work buddy now I've found you I'll check in from time to time, have a great Christmas Y'all

Just remembered something, I remember my old man picking up Tommy Cooper from a venue somewhere in Oldham town center, which would have been in the very late 70s one night in his Taxi. They were chatting as they went just kinda passing the time and just before Tommy got out of the car he leaned over and stuffed something into my dads top pocket saying "here you go lad have a drink on me later and with that he was gone. My dad clocked off for the night a few hours later and called in at the Greenacres Inn for a couple as he usually did before returning home and remembered the "tip, in his pocket, he reached in and pulled out, a Tea Bag 😂True story

It's heart breaking seeing the market now. My god oldham council is run by Muslims and boy can you tell its not about 15 stalls selling material to make Muslim clothes Muslim jewellery suitcases and a bed stall. Back in the 60s and 70s we had coach tours to our market it sold everything you could get anything you would need from Oldham market. Now its mainly a car park and Muslim clothes and jewellery. I'm pleased my mother moved to southern ireland in 1979 and died over their she would be devastated seeing oldham now. Thsn goodness we have trams to get us out if this shit hole to shop in towns with actual markets and shops. Take a walk down union street one chicken shop afer another theirs about 20 all next door to each other all their to hide drug money!!! If we know this the police have to.

I used to visit Oldham and go out for nights out there. It had a fantastic nightlife but unfortunately it could be violent. Yorkshire street was notorious for it. Nothing is there anymore and I cant believe how bad it looks now
@BarryBollox.Ай бұрын
Aye guaranteed to see a scrap on that street a couple of decades ago. On revisiting Oldham recently I cant believe how many pubs and bars have closed/gone. I suppose its happening all over the country and I know in some terms its for the better but there is a sad side to see the decline of the good old English Inn. Hundreds of years of pub culture, almost gone in a couple of decades.
@moheedur-rehman6585Ай бұрын
@@BarryBollox. Totally understand but who's driving that down? Property owners and breweries increase costs on the landlords driving them out of business. Once the building is out of use it obviously is repurposed for something and whoever comes along with a concept that works and the funding then uses it going forward. Additionally if it's not wanted the new business services would collapse. The building owner is getting rent and the new business is getting income and providing jobs due to increasing customer use.
