I wanted one when I got out of the service and always thought it was a pipe dream but I got out and the first listing on marketplace was for one with less than 100k miles I almost cried man, I'm gonna make sure she lives longer than me know

Most of em fell victim to 4 things. That crappy fuel injection caused 2 of the issues I speak of. It does malfunction with no way to put it back right economically speaking. The fuel injection hangs over every part of the 6 & 8cyl engines and it is time consuming as hell to fix oil leaks so people just ran em till they puked out of oil one day. Then the emissions systems once out of whack well.... Another problem was that fuel system was another nightmare. Which pump really failed the cheap one or the expensive one... I fixed mine and ripped all that garbage off. I went to the offenhauser intake and a 4bbl on my inline 6.... Works like a charm now...

Got a 1986 I6 with 35 000 miles on it that we got an estate auction. Old farmer bought it brand new in 1986 and only used it to drive to the local restaurant for breakfast.

Those common rust area that you showed us? Well many years ago a fine fellow told me about that and when I bought my 1995 F150 new I sprayed those areas with Cable Lube that you use on a Crane. The lube is still there, very tough stuff, and no rust at all. Great advice and works on any vehicle that has water/mud traps, they all do.

I've had my '95 F150 XLT since '99. It a regular cab 2WD short bed with a 302 and a 5-spd. I've had the rust over the rear wheels repaired and due to a wreck in '08 and letting it sit for 11 years I've had a ton of work done to it to get it back on the road. Two new fuel tanks and pumps along with fuel lines, everything new from the rad support forward, new windshield, one fender, replaced the computer module, an all new 134A A/C system, new clutch and master slave, a nice set of OEM chrome wheels, new tires and a bunch of other bits and pieces. It cost me a lot of money, without doubt more than the truck is worth, but it's the best pickup I've every had and I've had quite a few since my first, a '70 GMC 4WD. These were great trucks, nicely styled and reliable. Mine's a keeper as I certainly can't afford a new one but that's OK, I don't like any of the new pickups offered today.

I am a devoted GM guy myself but I am also a Deviant at times with some of the older Fords. I inherited this really rare 1988 f150 4x4 short bed High boy someone began making a show truck out of it with massive Dana 940 axles. It has a new trans rebuilt motor that has not run in 25 years. Was kinda stiff last time I went after her. I am putting the Offenhauser intake on her because she has this rebuilt cammed up inline 6. I am really anxious to get after her get her running before I do the body & paint. The only bad news is the thing is a zillion pieces yet. I am getting the engine stuff week by week day by day. I just kinda want to make her a nice old senior citizen with some snot. I am already over $2,500 intake carb headers floor pans cab supports which were not are not all that bad is the only rust. Some took the entire body off went ape shit on the frame is epoxy coated better than anything I even do myself here. New springs new spring hangers new shocks. & 4 really old dry flat tires on them old factory slot mag wheels... But who needs tires when it ain't running yet right??? I need a bed drop me a line if ya got a short bed

I just picked up a 91 F250 regular cab 5 speed 300 I6 all original from north idaho where they usually use gravel on the roads instead of salt...you could lick the frame and not taste metal. 133,000 miles.

I got a 1993 F150 4X4 with the 302 5.0 engine about 15 years ago with 100,000 on it. So far all it's needed so far is an idler pulley for the supentine belt and I replaced the throttle body sensor when it started getting harder to shift into overdrive. That truck is dam tough and runs like new yet. After fixing a few rust spots on it and some paint, I think it will last me the rest of my life!

I got a 95 xl, 302, auto, 4wd, Supercab 2 years ago. It has some of the rust you mentioned in the fenders...but runs great! I had to replace the windshield washer pump motor ($10), reset a spring on the right side tailgate latch, & replace a warped rim. That's all. The prior owner took really good care of it. So do I. The truck rides smoother than any pickup I've ever owned! Mpg is 16/21!!! I'm an EX chevy man, but I LOVE this Ford! Best truck I ever owned! No regrets buying this machine! She still has some good year's left in her, & I plan to keep it for all of them. I WISH today's pickups were this good!

Very important info about the front spring mounts. If those show any signs of wear or look like they have been replaced you need to look VERY carefully at the inside of the frame rail behind the mount. I learned the hard way that salt will sit between the rail and spring mount and destroy the frame. You stated that the drivers side is usually worse but my passenger was so bad I almost scrapped the truck. The frame fell apart in chunks! I ended up cutting out the bad metal and welding in a patch on both sides but it made a weekend job much longer. You may also want to edit the title to include Bronco's as it's the same (and actually what I have). Thanks.

I’ve got one of both and when I did the front spring towers on the f150 I was puckering my butt when I pulled the towers hoping to hell the frame was good, I was lucky and it was solid enough to wash off and carry on but t was loaded with salt!

Don’t forget the shifter tube / bushings along with the ignition actuator these are a HUGE problem with these OBS Fords . Great video . Cheers .

My shifter tube actually broke back in the day. Ended up buying one out of a 97, it worked but the indicator cable hookup was different so it never worked again

I hadn't had that issue in 30 years of driving Ford trucks of all ages and models, but I've had to repair two of my own in the last year. That one two starter collars that push the rods in the steering column - never dreamed that was the set up. First one took about 2 hours, the second one took about half an hour.

This is a service bulletin that the Ford garage missed. On my 1996 F-150, the engine would just quit or it wouldn’t start (fire off). After many hundreds of dollars another shop finally found the issue. There is a*shielded wire* that goes from the computer to the distributor. If the shielding breaks down - the signal between the computer and the distributor is lost and it wont run. They do that when they get old and the heat finally gets to them.

My 96 F-150 was having the same issues once I bought it back in 2012. After chasing my tail for a while, because it would either not start, or run for hours or minutes and just quit, either sitting still or driving on the highway. Sometimes you could restart it right away or it would leave me stranded. My issue (I was on forums and finally came across the answer) was the sensor inside of the distributer would heat up and open up and fail. I had to change the distributor out and retime my truck, and it has never been an issue since.

I have a 95 f150 short bed I'm selling. My father and I were working on it together until he suddenly passed away and I lost all interest in it. It's loaded with new parts, including leaf springs, leaf spring hangers, gas tank, radiator, radiator hoses,timing chain, and the list goes on and on and on. Your truck is beautiful. And I think the early 70's and mid 90s is Ford's best looking years.

I'm really surprised that I haven't seen any mention of the oil pan and radiator support rusting out on these. I bought mine new in 95 and I've replaced the radiator support, the oil pan, spring shackles and shock towers (the latter two mentioned in this video). They're all common problems on these. But overall it's an excellent truck and one of the better looking trucks made. I still have mine!

Yeah, that sounds a little steep, but I really think it would depend on the condition. They're gonna get a better price as they get older and more sought after, especially if they're in good condition, but not if it's a rust bucket and needs a lot of work!

All common areas as well as the driver side floor (always worse on that side is my experiece) and the cab corners. I own a few of these old trucks and the one I’ve had the longest has had all the things you mentioned replaced or will in the next few months, all in all they are great truck

Steve. I know a guy who is a helluva good body man and has run a shop for close to 45 years, he says the rust problems on vehicles here in Iowa are the worst hes' ever seen.... He blames the salt brine the DOT started using in the 90's.

I bought a 94 and had to replace the rad support, rear spring mounts, front shock mounting brackets. Along with the shocks and coil springs. Also the clock spring. Also needed front brakes but that’s normal for most used trucks. I also need a new rear gas tank and radio. It’s a work in progress.

I'm purchasing a 92 F150 5.0L V8 2wd long bed this week. Went to check it out today, lived most of its life on a farm/small town, no major rust, but some faded paint, 140k miles on it. I have never driven a vehicle that drove as smooth as this thing. I thought maybe getting on the highway and hitting 75-85mph would scare me, but nope... Drove better then anything I've ever driven.

I got a 96 to but I have pretty bad rust on both rear wheel wells and my cab corners. I do live in Minnesota though. Replace all brake lines, rear spring mounts (front and rear). Fuel pump, all aluminum radiator, new interstate megatron plus battery. All it needs is some new shoes.

We are selling our 96 f15 XLT.. four wheel drove dont work.. cost 100 bucks to get it fixed. Only 50,000 miles 2 owner.. everything looks grest. Havent looked under the truck.. it sat for alot of hears and my hisband started driving it. My son and his dad are working on his 96 Chevy short bed. My husband loves the short beds. Not sure why

Got an 84 f150 4x4 new,use to four wheel all over California from Pismo Beach to northern/southern Sierra,s,yes always clean up in wheel wells, hat truck 21 years 540,000 miles and only rust was bottom of drivers side door pillar

Mine is a 92 xlt 4x4 with the 4.9 six and I have the rust spots on the fenders and I have the engine miss now and then it’s only while the truck is warming up then it stops. the other places to look for are the tailgate cover holds tons of dirt use car wash and spray behind it and the windshield trim below the wipers holds dirt n leaves needs washing. Great truck !

@@buckurich2491 I changed all the emision sensors there are a lot! exhaust o2, throttle sensor, vacume valves ( can't remember the names) keep looking all over and the barometric sensor on firewall at least thats where mine was. Good luck.

Forgot to mention the door hinges wear out, don't need to buy complete hinges just hinge pins and bushings. They don't sell them for the trucks but they are the same as the fox body mustang and the hinge rebuild kits are about $20. Also if you have to pull your ecm its much easier to remove the driver side kick panel and pull it out from the inside.

I wish i could say the same about my 90' 302. Ive been trying to chase down a high idle, and a misfire for about a year now. Still cant figure it out.

one thing you may have forgotten is if you are looking at a f150 - f350 with a manual transmission, look under the dash where the clutch rod goes through the fire wall by the gas pedal , the fire wall there is kind of weak and will cause problems, ford made a bracket that bolted to the fire wall to enforce it , but good luck finding one now, i had to get some thicker metal cut out the holes and weld it in , now i have no more clutch problems also on the 87-91 if you buy one do the 130 amp alternator upgrade and ignition module relocation it will save you lots of problems down the road, i promise, i have a 1988 f250 5.8L extended cab custom with the 10.25 rear end and granny low 5 speed also the 5.8L has resistors in the wireing on the motor the 300 -460 and 5.0 dont have the one near the coil you cant get those resistors anymore , you got to make them yourself so beware the 87-91 5.8L hope this helps

96' Bronco owner. Bought it with 114 K on it. Not my primary driver, but I have only had to replace a few minor things like ABS sensor cables. Otherwise, routine maintenance keeps it running and driving great. You know Ford did it right with this generations, because where i live you see a ton of these still beating the streets.

This has to be the best body style Ford put out, before they go all foo-foo, and difficult to work on. Got three of these with the 7.3 DIT. That 300 with a five speed is a great little truck.

Always take a good look at the Radiator Core Support! It is a BIG job to replace one of those, and they tend to rust out on the bottom.

You're right! I just did my second core support on my 95! This time I primered it with Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator and spayed it with about 5 coats of acrylic enamel. Hopefully it's the last one I'll ever do! I also had to replace my oil pan a few years back, which is also common for these trucks.

I have some pictures of a 86 extended cab short bed. I can't seem to find a way to share them. It was in the hot Texas sun until 2 years ago. I changed the fuel tanks drove it for a Lil while, then put it n my cousins body shop. I did a complete color change on it. Went from gray to DEEP BLUE PEARL. It's also loaded with metal flake. Replaced every single piece of rubber and crome, with the exception of the windshield crome. That's a total of $500. Buying those pieces slowly.

I’m rust treating right now on my 91 F 150 4by4 XLT Lariat. Here’s a bad rust spot I just found. Right beside the radiator on both sides at the bottom of the channel that the head lights are in. I think they are the mounts for the body onto the frame. Open the hood and look down with a flashlight. I’m lucky I found it in time. You’ve got to take the wheels and the plastic cowlings off to work on it.

Just got a 1995 F150 XL with the 5.8L 351W RWD with just over 145k miles. Pretty happy with it. Only thing I'm worried about is the plastic bed liner. Hopefully it's not too rusty under there

That F150 is one nice looking truck. I have a '94 F350 5 speed ,460, crewcab with a longbox. Its got a 5.9 cummins waiting to go into it. And yeah, its got a bit of rust that has to have some sheetmetal replaced.

You're right, I've had 4 different F100/150s over 25 years. 71/76/91/96 and they have all had the solenoid replaced at least once. In my 76 F100 I kept a spare in glove box, it went out 3 times. The odd thing about this solenoid is that even though they were a common problem, they used the same one for probably 30+ years on multiple vehicles, cars and trucks.

Mine went through 4 starters, and 3 batteries. The solenoid was never replaced.

My 87 F150 is on it's 6th solenoid this year. They stick and have burnt up one starter. And it's not a Ford part, they've all been aftermarket.

Have a 95 4x4 and have replaced both radius arm brackets, all 4 rear spring brackets,have a new front tank and straps and fuel pump waiting on warm weather to replace and just noticed shock tower on front left is broke duel shocks so thats in the works but I love the style of these trucks

There's a capacitor that went bad in my computer and the truck wouldn't start sometimes. Finally I couldn't get it to start and noticed the fuel pumps sounded like they were constantly trying to prime. Same thing it does if you forget to hook the computer up. I got new caps and soldered them in and it works fine now.

had a 96 f150 growing up. it was my first vehicle. rusted out in the common areas. had someone jam a screwdriver through the passenger key lock and from that point i could use a stick or anything long enough to stick inside and turn to open the door lol. Also I could take the key out anytime while driving and if I didnt turn the ignition off all the way off I could restart the car without a key lol. Loved this truck though it just kept running.

Just bought my 96 f150 163k and job boxes and ladder rack. Super excited to use for work. 5 speed and I don’t mind it’s not 4x4. Guy traded me for a 98 ranger with 205k so I got a good deal haha. He just really liked the ranger and wanted it for his painting business. I hope this keeps running for a while. Taking it to the mechanic on Monday.

The oil pan rotts off along with the brake lines even the radius arms not just the bushings. Don't buy a northern truck. The only part that survives is the hood. Been there done that

The interior door handles like to break easy because the cable stretches out, and I'm not sure if this is common but the hinges on my trucks doors sag so that you have to lift them when you close it

Put new brass bushings in you hinges. $3 on ebay. This also solve your door handle issue.

First off that body style was 87 to 96. In 92 they switch the front end, interior, and tailgate. The rust it happen in front of rear bumper on the box as well and the bumpers rot out as well.

oldradio16 Also from 1992 and up the speedometer goes bouncing around while driving. 1987 to 91 the volts gauge does not work so you have to smack the dash to get it working. 91 back ford trucks have turn signal switch problems.

I have a 93 5.0 aod trans had a hard time finding transmission parts so I put an old mustang gt transmission in her Second one I bought watch out for the shift tube in the column they crack the straight six is a better set up easy to find parts when trying to budget and have lots of power.

I bought 3 of those trucks brand new a 94 and 2 96s ....one had a 5.0 and the 94 and 96 had 300 6 good motors ....i still like the looks of them....

1980 Ford F150 frames had huge holes in the frame and this factory.Ford drilled holes in the 1980 Ford F150 truck frames to make them lighter and there was a downside of it.Made the frame weaker.Exhaust manifold problems too,Ford has not fixed this problem yet to this day.The oil pans tend to rust out in the 302,351 and 300 inline sixes,not fun to change these at all.Ball joints,the twin I beam suspension loves eating ball joints even greased up every oil change.The twin I beam suspension is a pain to get a front alignment done on.Also front tires don't last very long on the twin I beam suspension.The 302,never cross the #8 plug wire.This is a cause of a detonated #8 piston.The Mazda 5 speed manual transmission,do the daily fluid level checks in it and it takes regular automatic transmission fluid.Likes to leak from the top.

what to look for depends on if you are just looking or already own one, if you don't one yet the most important thing to look for is a chevy or GMC but if you already own one the thing to look for that will do you the most good is a cliff to push the POS off of.....

The tank switching canister on these trucks have serious issues that cause stalling and inability to start the engine , because the injection manifold ( rail) cant be charged (8-10 psi). Also the in tank pick-up assist pump usually work well but make sure they do. The oxy sensor on the exhaust must be replaced at least every two years ( engine check lite come on). I have three 89s , two 4wd , and one 2wd. 302 ,460,351.

pat loughner Sounds awesome man I have a 96 Ford F150 with a 5.0L (302) Windsor V8 with 207,000 miles on it and still going strong. The only thing I replaced on my truck was the starter but other than that mostly was just simple maintenance, took out the transmission fluid just to get rid of the shuttering it was making and it hasn't had a problem ever since.

Radiator core supports - ALWAYS INSPECT THEM CAREFULLY BEFORE PURCHASE!!! Replacing them can be very labor-intensive!!

I have a 1996 Ford F-150. I had to replace the ignition switch which is located underneath the steering column. I had to replace the DPFE which is responsible for throwing the check engine light for bad EGR valve. I've had to replace the radiator and heater core. The heater core is very easy to replace because it is directly behind the glove box. Remove the screws and the access panel comes open and there it is. I have had to replace the whole steering column because the ignition key got stuck in the start position. You tried to turn the key back and it just spins. Oh and also I had to replace the ignition coil a few times because the gutter way rotted out underneath the hood allowing rain water to drip on top of it from above where the hood connects.

This F-150 generation came out in 1991 for the 1992 model year and was sold from 1992 to 1996 because the 1980 models were part of the 1980-1986 generation, then it was the 1987-1991 generation, and then it was this generation (1992-1996).

Yes, but other than a face lift to the front end and dash most of the truck remains the same 92-96 and it was 87-91...80-86 may be stretching it a bit but again many of the issues relating to the body and frame are the same.

and inside door handles break pretty often unless you replace with a factory ford one and with 92-97 trucks the head light switches will make the headlights work but you won't have dash lights, marker lights and tail lights.

Front spring mount is sandwiched to the frame. There the frame can rot from trapped water. I always put some oil on that area. That rusted can kill a truck forever.

For got the radiator core support rusting and rotting on the bottom where it bolts to each side of the frame I got a 94 like that and just bought a 95 and it's rotted out to usually all 3 of them go at once the leaf spring shackles and mounts then the shock towers if those are gone you can almost bet the core support is to

7:40 if that bushing is falling apart it's likely the hinge pin bushings are worn out & the door's sagging. Also if the door won't shut it could be because the bottom corner of the cab is rotted out, I had a 90 & a 94 where that area rusted to where the rocker disconnected from the cab corner and when it does the corner springs back. You can shut the door by pushing the back of the cab forward but it won't be long until the seatbelt pulls through the floor.

Common problem, AIRBAG CONTROL MODULE SHORTS OUT!. Dont just pop in a new one, there has to be a modification. To keep the fuse from blowing and taking out your shifting and transmission as well you can unplug it until you do the repair and it runs fine.

Other common areas for rust on those trucks are the radiator supports toward the outboard ends and front fenders, down low behind the wheel wells.

If it's going to 460 in it it needs a timing chain and gears at 90000 miles that's almost mandatory this vehicle also require water pump every 5 to 6 years depending on how much to use it

I had taken that pad off and pulled the plastic off and took it to a automive tailor (mainly known for auto seats) and Had them rewrap it in vinyl

I ended up pulling mine off and fixing it myself. Chiped off all the flaky vinyl sanded the foam a little wider and deeper than used great stuff expanding foam to fill the cracks. Got some vinyl and spray adhesive to recover it...that held up and looked great for 3 year

Napa is great, only thing Iv'e ever had a problem with is their thermostats, got 2 bad ones in a row one time.

Agreed on the door bushings Sal Gonzalez. I think they had trouble with them from factory and corrected it. I changed my driver's door bushings like maybe 3 years after I bought my F150 new in 95. When I bought the bushings, the parts man at the dealer said, "You'll change them once and never touch them again!" It's 23 years old now and I've never touched them since I originally changed them!

@@bobbyhill368 - a guy I started college with, back in August of 94...he had a 79 Ford F-100 reg. cab pickup (painted green). Called it the Green Chicken bc everytime it'd backfire, it sounded like a chicken sqwaking, Lol. Sadly, the summer between our 1st and 2nd year (the summer of 95), the right front tire blew, he couldn't control it and he wrapped it around a tree on Main St. in the city we went to college in.

I have a 2000 with a 4.2 and 5 speed. The engine is absolute junk! I found out after I bought it that the manual transmission can only tow 2,100lbs. So much for taking the boat to the lake, but if I ever do it’ll be a one way trip down the boat launch ramp.

I have a 92 F150 Fleet side I got last year in pretty good shape. I'm in Arizona so mine does not have a spot of rust on it anywhere that I have seen. Thanks for the info about the door bushings. Mine don't latch as well as they should and it looks like an easy fix. One other issue mine has is the loud rattle coming from the right side of the dash. Which is made worse by its harsh and very truck-like ride (go figure!). Also, the clutch, while it works, is a little past its prime and chatters if you don't engage it just right.

Check frame in front on driver side have looked at a truck were the steering box was ripping off the frame and the owner tried 2 put a square patch on it and win u turn it side 2 side the whole frame was flexing at that patch / another truck we actually bought the frame in the front was bad win my dad backed it off roll back front wheels curled under neith a friend bought it and welded a piece of angle across it but look at Frames really good

Good video. Word of advice to everyone: Do NOT buy an F-150 with the dropped Aero nose and OHC engine like the 1997 F-150 forward. The idiots at Ford made is so you literally cannot reach the coil packs and spark plugs in the #7 & 8 cylinders from the engine bay because they are buried in the transmission tunnel behind the firewall. You first have to put the rig up on a lift and remove the wheels and mud shrouds, and then climb into the wheel wells and reach up and over the engine because the plugs are on top and not on the sides like pushrod engines. The #5 & 8 coil packs are a little better, but not much. Is it any wonder why you have to put up your first-born as collateral when you take the truck in to a dealer for a simple tune-up? I had a '98 F-250 and loathe the day I bought it.

Memory Lane for me watching this. Had a '89 5.0 as my very first truck. Over 6 years I replaced the slave cylinder, alternator, starter, throw out bearing, water pump, rear end gearing 3x {my fault, dumb kid never shimmed correctly} and the auto locking hub's. Mainly cuz I pounded that truck, towing friends stock cars and farm mud running. I just started looking at that era to buy as a toy truck but current prices are ridiculous so will wait til politics make the market go down again.

Just picked up a 88 f 150 4x4 with 5 did manualand a 5.0 engine. The only problems I have so far is a 3000rpm idle a nd a blown head gasket. Paid 100 bucks for it and replaced the starter. He had an automatic starter on a manual trans

All my bushings are shot that was a little project because it was so bad it yolked the openings to the point when the bushing couldn’t be clamped in solution: washers to space it out so it doesn’t slip out of its socket

I had a 1976 bought it from my brother when it was 5 yrs old had 30 k on it, I ran it for 14 yrs only thing I ever put on that 300 engine was a water pump was working great when i sold it!
