8:50 the meaning of vacuum impregnation is to allow the resin to enter the capillaries of the wood ... The air comes out quickly, the resin enters slowly, after equalizing the pressure, you need to keep the wood in the resin for 12-24 hours ...
@OldRusty Жыл бұрын
In reality, the handle was soaked for about 3 days. With periodic pumping of air and at normal pressure.

My man...if the air comes out of the wood, what do you think will fill the void it leaves behind? A black hole?...The air that is pulled out is directly replaced by resin, otherwise it wouldnt come out. No need to leave it in for another 24 hours

One question about the process.... why bother with the Japanese pull-saw to initially rough-cut the blank when you have a bandsaw right there? 🤔
@morethan16letters2 жыл бұрын
This type of Japanese cooking knife is called Ko-Deba. Ko means small. Deba knife is used for dismantling fishes. Therefore this is for cooking small whole fish like young mackerels not for aged tunas because too big.😊

The sharpness test is always to simply shave a small amount of your arm hair that's sharp if it can do that cutting paper isn't really impressive especially if you've just created something as beautiful and obviously razor sharp this was a truly excellent demonstration of Master Craftsmanship God bless you Sir and God speed 💫✝️✨

I disagree, sometimes a knife and even an axe after sharpening shaves your hand fine, but cannot cut through paper. I don't understand what this has to do with it.

WHat was the liquid you used to stabilize the wood? Tung oil? Also, whty were the little glue balls you added to make the tang stay in the handle? Sorry if I missed iut in the comments somewhere.
@OldRusty2 жыл бұрын
About the liquid wrote in the comments - it is a polymer analogue of "cactus juice". The balls are also a polymer - when heated to 80 degrees it becomes soft for about 5 minutes. Just in case you have to take the knife apart for maintenance or repair.

Very nice job, I really like it. You are a real professional. There is one single thing I would like to mention. I noticed you weare gloves on most of your operations: drilling, grinding, filing or any other operations you do there. Have you ever imagined what will happen is the drill or the grinder catches your gloves? I will tell you: it will remove your arm from the shoulder FOR GOOD. Please, get a second and think: if you wear gloves, your arm may be removed from your shoulder for good. If you DO NOT WEAR gloves, you may lose one or two fingers. What do you prefer? Sorry for my warning, maybe the tone of my message is a little bit tough, all I wanted to do was to draw your attention on this issue. Take very much care of your health and safety coz of you don't do it, nobody else will. Thank you for reading. God bless you!
@OldRusty Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice about the gloves. I try to use very carefully and lately only good quality gloves are very comfortable for my hands and good protection from cuts when working on the tape grinder. On powerful equipment, I try to work with minimal risk of getting my clothes or gloves in it :)
@_BLANK_BLANK2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I hate when the brass in a wa handle gets too hot while grinding, and messes with the epoxy holding it together. Then you have to go back, and redo it. The solution you came up with is pretty smart.

@Arrviasto2 жыл бұрын
Some of the points show lack of experience. When I saw you glue in that spacer I wondered how are you going to shape it since heat of grinding that brass instantly destroys the epoxy - as shown in the video. Handsanding on that blade is just bad - you destroyed the bevel line but didn't achieve the flat surface. I'd either polish the bevel only leaving the patina untouched or polished those surfaces separately (with a sand paper wrapped around something solid like a drill bit). On the other hand - stabilisation of that wood looks decent and in the and it's a nice looking handle. And I guess the knife is more functional than before, so that's good.

When the tip went blue in the initial grind, you lost the temper. Grinding tempered steel requires allot of water or a light touch and a dip in the water after each pass on the belt sander. IE: time and patience.
