My Grandfather was a part of the DLI and parachuted into Arnhem in 1944. That and being knocked off a tank when the turret turned were the only bits of information he ever told me about his service. He told me that when I was 11 and never had any notion of what occurred at Arnhem until I was 18. That was the moment that I had some small understanding as to why he never said any more.

That's significant more than my Grandfather ever said. The only war story I know is what my aunt told me she heard while he was drunk with his brothers(my great-uncles). It was the story of how he got the scare on his forehead.... Let's just say I'm glad that particular kamikaze had bad aim.

What they did was very important because the German counterattack was a desperate attempt to halt the Allied advance on Germany. And if the Germans had broken through it would have bought them much needed time. Instead the 101 kept them tied down till reinforcements arrived and the German offensive failed. Great reaction!

Not many people know of the 705th Tank Destroyer Battalion that was stationed with 101st in Bastogne, they arrived in time to blunt the attack of the 2nd Panzer Division, they accounted for a major part of the 101st combat capabilities for the entire siege. For the length of the siege the 705th TD battalion were credited with approximately 40 German Tank Kills while only losing 6 of their M18 Hellcat TD's. Thanks to the speed, manoeuvrability and firepower of the M18 Hellcat the 705th was able to convince the German attackers (particularly the armoured divisions) that the forces stationed at Bastogne were larger then stated from reports because the M18's would shoot, relocate and shoot within seconds giving an appearance of a larger force and helped prevent further Panzer Divisions from moving on Bastogne for the entire siege. The battalion remained stationed in Bastogne for the remainder of the Battle of the Bulge until they separated/released from the 101st and soon after received the Presidential Unit Citation for their role in the defence of Bastogne. "The finest tank destroyer battalion yet trained" - General A. D. Bruce

When I was young I was a student of military history and this led me to basic training at Fort Benning in Georgia. It was my intention to go to airborne school as soon as I graduated as an Infantry soldier but I visited the airborne school during an on post pass. One look at the 250 foot jump tower and I said F that. At my size, six foot, 220 pounds, I would have hit the ground like a sack of cement. Went on to be a mechanized infantryman with the 1st Armored, making faces at the Russians across the German border. Still very much into military history and love Sabaton and I love your reactions.

Germans when you see a horsa glider “Hans don’t worry it’s just airborne troops and we have mg-34’s” then an A-13 tank roles out of it. yeah we had paratroop tanks similar tests were done with the M-22 but I don’t think it was used in the same capacity as the A-13 and if you go to the tank museum in the uk there’s a modified M-22 with British Pegasus markings which was used for testing.

My dad was 1/501st PIR, 101st Airborne in World War 2. He arrived to his unit as a replacement in November of 1944. They were thinking that the war was coming to an end and his unit was behind the lines for R and R when the Germans launched to attack that led to the battle of the bulge. My dad was a three war vet. Fought in WW2, was a drill sergeant during the Korean conflict and did two tours of Vietnam before he retired on 31 December of 1970. 26 years and 7 months of active duty. He had lied about his age to join two weeks before his 17th birthday.
