Hel was the daughter of Loki and the giantess Angrboda, and so was the sister of the wolf Fenrir and the world-serpent Jörmungandr. She was born with the bones on one half of her body fully exposed and is often depicted as a half-black and half-white monster. She grew up with her brothers in Jotunheim, the land of the giants, but was taken to Asgard by Odin when he decided she should live there with her father. The other Norse gods were uncomfortable with Hel's appearance, however, and so Odin send her away and gave her the World of Niflheim, where she became the queen of the dead (only warriors who died in battle went to Valhalla, everyone else went to Niflheim). The line: "A monster in their eyes she was thrown from the sky" refers to her banishment from Asgard, I believe. She is described as harsh, greedy and cruel or at least indifferent to the suffering of mortals and, as far as I understand it, this song interprets her character as the result of her banishment, being thrown out of Asgard by her own father P.s. don't worry about not knowing about all of this, I had to look it up too :)

She was left like that after she was thrown in some versions. She was thrown because they were afraid of her power in those same versions.

As an immortal goddess I would say it's kinda ok to be indifferent of mortals
@frederikanby26343 жыл бұрын
as indifferent as she is, she is known to be moved by overwhelming emotions. the story of how she offered to release Balder back to the realm of the living IF the entire world would mourn his loss.
@Corymbia3 жыл бұрын
She is far from indifferent. It'd be more accurate to say she is less than personal to mortals. Those that are good she warms and cares for, and those that are cruel and evil she punished harshly.

No one should ever be bashed for wanting to learn or dive into stuff - being a Scandinavian I love Norse mythology since growing up with it, but there are *so* many more historical and mythological tales from all over the world that are absolutely amazing, and there are so many similarities in trying to find answers to the deep questions of life and death, the universe and the meaning of it all. Ylva (lead singer) is an absolute valkyrie of a singer, and she delivers at the same level live, she's astonishing! And the goddess of the underworld, the patroness of those crippled, broken and lost, regardless if she cares or can help. The idea speaks to many of us.
@Prisoner..246013 жыл бұрын
thank you very much for reacting to this :) from what i remember, their are 3 places that you can go to in the afterlife for Norse mythology, for those who die in battle, they either go with Odin to Valhalla or to Freyja and to Fólkvangr . Everyone who doesn't die in battle go's to Hel. she is also not usually depicted as evil.

The brothers of Hel specifically are in Power Snake (Jormungandr, pronounced yor mon gun der, I believe) and Chain Breaker (Fenrir). For another great norse mythology esque song, try Einherjr by Hulkoff. Their lead singer is Pär Hulkoff from Raubtier and the Bourbon Boys. I know that Raubtier has come up in a few of your reactions and Einherjr is epic!

They from the same small city as Sabaton, only one in the band have a brother by blood (that are in the band). They have 2 albums both are around Norse mythology, have not seen any live videos with good recorded sound :( Yggdrasil is great, as well as One or Brothers Unite, if you want a fun and uplifting song then there's The Mead Song.

As with everyone's choices, I'd like to say you need to listen to Concerning Norns before Yggdrasil, one after the other as concerning norns is essentially an intro and gives backstory to the song of Yggdrasil. It ups the level of epicness.

Great reaction! and well done with the request Prisoner! Awesome song! We Fins were not much part of the Viking faith and we had our own gods and origin stories. But I think many are very familiar with Viking stories in here too! As a next song from Brother of Metal I would say Yggdrasil. It is very epic and all of their vocalists get to shine in that one!

The runic words at the beginning are Deyja, meaning Death, and Grima meaning Helmet, Hel(Hela) is the Goddess of death, and the helmet could refer to her sort of "helm" of thorns in some depictions.

I absolutely adore this band! This track is probably my favorite of theirs, but all of their stuff is incredible! And a lot of it is very much in the vein of storytelling, and all are THIS epic... for the most part. (The Mead Song is a bit ridiculous, but still amazing) I highly recommend doing more of their stuff, both because they're FANTASTIC and because it can really teach you a lot. The song "Emblas Saga" is effectively the origin story for Norse Pagan belief and is absolutely incredible. I also recommend Prophecy of Ragnarok, Yggdrasil, and Weaver of Fate!

Tongue-in-cheek doesn't even come close xD ALSO just a heads up in case one of like 5 million people haven't told you yet: Powerwolf new album coming out soon, and it sounds like they invited a bunch of female vocalists to do covers / collab work on the album. So far they have confirmed Alissa White-Gluz of Arch Enemy and will be naming others shortly. Sounds like it could be good react material whenever THAT comes out! xD

Prisoner 24601 is Jean Valjean from Les Miserables. He's one of the protagonists and main characters. He has some epic songs in that musical and is a strong character. The cast from the 90's set a very high bar that I haven't heard met yet. The movie was good, not the same, however, still done well. Les Mis is an amazing musical that I highly recommend checking out. Another amazing band, loved this one and going to check out more. Great suggestion 24601!

Hel (name of the Goddess and the place) is one of the three prophetic children of Loki: Jormungandr, Fenrir or Fenrisulven, and Hel. She is described as having half of her body "pale and striated like a corpse" and half "pink and live as anyone else" she was delegated to rule over the land of those who die in dishonourable ways. she wouldve been there at the very end of everything having allowed Loki to lead an army of the dead against Odin and the Aesir in the events of Ragnarok. its still pronounced "hell" even though its with one L.

The man who wrote down Norse mythology was a christian trying to Christianize the pantheon (as in, he made a bunch of stiff up and we don't know what is original). Loki and Hel are the good guys, who will destroy the sinful gods and bring in the new age where all will be good with the resurrected perfect god Baldur (I'm sure you see the connection)

For anyone interested in Norse mythology I can suggest that you check out the broad strokes of that and then do the same thing with Greek mythology and compare. Some interesting things to be discovered hehe For instance with regards to this song. Who rules the underworld in either of the above - why? Who ends up where after they die, and why. You need to read a hell of a lot more to fully understand and draw something close to reasonable conclusions from what you find (certainly more than I have), but it's a fun little exercise either way if you ask me. Great video OldSkulenerd :)
