Nice fantasy weapon… But it’s not a 'war' scythe, though. Those are oriented straight out of the shaft, not at a 90 degree angle like this one (and farm scythes). Having it like this would make it impractical to use in combat, as you'd have to step in to get the blade behind the opponent. But I can’t blame you, it’s the common depiction in fantasy art. It would be nice to see you make a real war scythe for comparison.

I've always wanted to make one of these, but I was told a 28 to 30 inch saw blade was a better choice to use to cut out a scythe blade shape. But i never thought a giant wrench would be an option too.

@@pksvkpk4801 They can be used as weapons. There are even some martial arts that focus on it, both in Europe and Japan. This comes from the olden days when peasant farmers had to defend themselves from invasion with whatever tools they had lying around. Many opted for the scythe as it proved surprisingly effective, and eventually they started making scythes specifically for use on the battlefield. In fact, I've read that it's believed the peasant uprising of 11th century Poland featured scythes as a favored weapon among the poor.

@Pclav S oh, definitely. But for that matter, we tend see stouter construction and slightly longer handles on kamas meant for fighting than kamas meant for harvesting, but they're kamas still by design despite their relatively minor differences. Same practices in play with binding an opponent's weapon, countering with the other hand, and using the unique blade shape to attack from unexpected angles. Similar principles to the scythe, save for the differences inherent between polearms and single handed weapons fitting a similar niche.

@Judas Iscariot While you have an actual good point judas. Harvest scythes have a real thin blade angled to cut the best when pulled in a low arc. They are meant to cut thin, fragile plants in a single, swift, energy efficient motion. "Battle" scythes used by the Polish Army had the blade re-sharpened to be thicker. Thin blades will blunt and break significantly quicker when cutting anything stiffer than spaghetti, so in order to make it through muscle let alone bone the blade needs to be altered. Furthermore, they rotated the blade 90 degrees. In the original orientation the blade can't hit a target in front of you, only relatively below. This is because the cutting edge is on the inside of the blade. Look at any use of harvest scythes in combat, not a single blow lands using the inside of the weapon. And why would they? The handle would block a follow through and it requires letting your opponent through your defenses. For an example What's the point of using a pencil, when you can use a knife? Yes it's really cool, but it's going to be really hard to do it, and it might be ineffective, unlike the knife. But I can’t lie that it looks fashionable.

Honestly, you can find substitutes for some of the equipment if you know where to look. As an example, around railyards you can find track scraps to use as an anvil, old heater pipe can be cut for the forge, and you can get an 8 lb. hammer at Home Depot for under $50. The real expense is when you get the power tools and base materials.

Great finished product, but a few things to consider next time: forge in the bevels, it's cheaper and faster; did you run out of gas? The Kaowool needs replacing and sealing, the fibers can be blown out and get lodged in the lungs- this if anything else is a big deal. I would think about avoiding engine oil for quenching, it's unsafe and doesn't impart any practical level of carbon into the steel, but I do appreciate it is cheaper to obtain. At least you're doing it in the open air though.

If you ever consider selling this masterpiece, I would love to buy this. Out of curiosity - how much do you think it`s worth? Including the cost of materials, tool wear, own work, time spent, and subtracting general usability(for obvious reasons decorative only) must be worth a fortune. A wonderful work.

This video is an impressive showcase of the incredible skills of a group of parkour athletes. The footage is thrilling and captures the intense physicality and daring feats of the athletes as they jump, flip, and climb their way through various urban environments. The videographer has done an excellent job of using a variety of camera angles and editing techniques to showcase the athletes' movements in a dynamic and engaging way. The use of music is also well done and adds to the adrenaline-pumping tone of the video. Whether you're a fan of parkour or just appreciate impressive feats of athleticism, this video is definitely worth checking out. Highly recommended!

This is a display piece. I was also frustrated by the addition of the word "war" before a tool used for harvesting that has absolutely no practical application in any other situation. This was made to be hung on a wall cuz it looks cool and nothing else because it's stylization has made it an ineffective tool as well as it being a rediculous weapon even if the handle wasn't too thin.
@KurNorock
@KurNorock 2 жыл бұрын
The handle is the least of your worries with this thing. Even with a strong handle this would be completely useless for anything. Scythes with these right angle mounted blades bring used as weapons were never a thing. For good reason. They would make for terrible weapons. Uncontrollable, slow, and impossible to use in combat.

A amazing weapon, deserves be handled by a scythe master. But to tell the truth, I wanted this scythe too 🤩
@kobedoe3120
@kobedoe3120 Жыл бұрын
Its not a weapon, its a farmers tool. True war scythes would never have the blade running horizontal to the hilt. In a real fight, this thing would offer the user no balance, no power, no legibility, no reach. You can neither parry with this item or attack from a angle that wouldn't leave you completely exposed. The user would get crushed by anyone used a sword, spear, or mace. Real life combat scythes would have the blade running vertical to the hilt, effectively making the weapon a glaive, not a true scythe.

That was pretty slick! I was wondering why he was using styrofoam but now that I think about it the metal would be so hot that it would just melt it away and because of the sand it would cool and take the shape of the foam! Genius! Man I've been interested in learning how to make my own weapons and smithing in general ever since I was a child it always seemed like the coolest and most bad ass person in mythical tales was the guy who made the weapons for the adventures....i really love that this is possible with the right safety and know how even with basic objects that have rusted and been discarded ... he'll I got a whole garage full of things like that wrench and random metals he melted down for the handle....obviously I can just go outside and start making weapons but this video is deffinently getting me hyped to persue someone who could properly show me how to do these things....also doesn't hurt that I am well versed with grinders and saws and woodworking 😉

This is not a war scythe. This is a pop culture Reaper scythe, which acts more like a war pick with limited cutting. Proper war scythes had the blade mount at a 90 degree angle, similar to a naginata, spear, and other weapons. This was to give it better cutting capacity and better stabbing. The War Scythe was the weapon of choice for Polish peasants from the Middle Ages up to 1939. The War Scythe's most famous use was in the Battle of Raclawice (pronounced Racwavitse) in 1794. Other than that, this is not a war scythe, it's more of a two handed kama
@randal8254

Idk, seems to have a of a bit bulky blade, even for a two handed kama. I imagine it would be horribly impractical to fight with due to the probable weight imbalance upfront.
