Oldsmobile Valve Guides final installation

This video demonstrates installing Oldsmobile valve guides, setting depth, milling the height, chamfering, and milling the outside diameter. I try to keep mistakes I make in videos to depict shop work more accurately. You will see a few this time.

I always look forward to your videos, because I see different ways of accomplishing a common task. I like the sleeves you set over the guides to control the depth. (Very clever) I believe you are using a drill press? Talk about mistakes... at almost 70...I'm an expert. Very good video quality. What is your opinion of thin-wall bronze liners? I know the tooling to do their installation is more involved and expensive that the steel .502 guides. Do you have an opinion on their longevity vs the steel inserts?

Thank you for the praise, I'm happy to hear you enjoy the videos. I was taught to do this work using a mill and Serdi (100?). Unfortunately I can't afford new equipment like that so I'm stuck with what I have until I find some used machines. I am very meticulous and try to keep my results indistinguishable from machine shop work. To your question, the manganese bronze guides are for racing applications and essential for stainless steel and titanium valves. They don't hold oil very well and aren't made for longevity (there are some new grooved designs that help). I don't use them on anything that sees driving on the street. I would recommend a machine shop to install them if someone was building an engine that required them. Thank you for the great question, and thanks again for watching my videos!

Thank you for all your invaluable information. Really appreciate your videos. I apologize for bumping in on this post. This is a question regarding your 1970 455 build. I am curious if you used a rattle can to paint it? If so, what brand and particular color? I can't seem to find a gold I'm happy with, but I like the looks of the 70-455 finished color.

No apologies necessary, thank you for the comment and question! I used VHT Metallic Gold for the 70 455. The correct factory color would have been Corporate Metallic Blue which is an excellent color, but if you want a good custom gold the VHT Metallic Gold is a great choice.

Thank you for the very prompt response. The SP404 gold flake?? The can cap didn't give it the justice it deserved.

@@davido4438 That's the one, the color might also look different on your monitor, try a test piece first. Also it dries a different shade than when it's applied.
