Back in 1976 I was serving in the army and stationed in Germany. We had three guys who were really good northern soul dancers. And when they got up onto the floor all the Germans cleared it, and stood back and watched in amazement. I'm getting old.

One of my all time northern tracks brilliantly sung up there with Judy street
@thesoultwins725 ай бұрын
@grahamwest4560.......Judy Street hails from Indiana, is white and a classically trained pianist. Like many NS artists she had only limited success releasing just 5 singles before disappearing back into oblivion. Despite that, 'What' established her as one of the most popular singers in NS history.

In a New York record shop asking for help. Me: Hi, I'm wondering if you can help me find a record. Clerk: Sure. What is the name of it? Me: Yes Clerk: I asked you what is the name of the song. Me: Yes, that's it. Clerk: What's it? Me: Exactly Clerk: I can't help you if you don't tell me what it's called. So are you going to tell me the name or not? Me: What Clerk: What the name of the song is. WHAT IS THE NAME OF THE SONG YOU ARE LOOKING FOR? Me: Yes, thats it. Clerk: What is it? Me: Exactly Clerk: Let's try something else. Do you know Who sings it? Me: Someone named Judy Street. Clerk: Now we are getting somewhere. Hmmm. Sounds kinda familiar. Is it from the 60's Me: I think so Clerk: So this Judy Street sings a song called what? Me: Yes Clerk: The song is called yes? Me: Of course not, that would be stupid. It's called what. Clerk: I don't know. That's why I'm asking you. Me: But I already told you. Clerk: Told me what? Me: Yes Clerk: (picking up nearby record) You see this? Me: Yes Clerk: (pointing to spot on label) You see how it says Beatles right here, that's the artist, right? Me: Right Clerk: And you see how it says A Hard Days Night right here. That is the name of the song. Me: Everyone knows that. Clerk: So if the record you are looking for had Judy Street instead of Beatles, it would say what instead of A Hard Days Night? Me: Of course. Why wouldn't it. Clerk: GET THE HELL OUTTA HERE! Me: (leaving) Jeez. What is his problem?

They made it up themselves in the late 60s. Listening to fast tempo American soul music. Before and independent of breakdancing as we know it.

@sheikhyaboooty.......WRONG!! It was actually filmed at 'Wigan Casino' in 1977 for Granada TV's 'This England' documentary series. I was there that horrible night - I never ever went to Wigan again! [by the way, Wigan Casino only opened on 23rd September 1973]

All the footage in this vid is of the cast and the extras from the film "Northern Soul" which was released in 2014. Filmed in a dancehall somewhere in the north of England, possibly Blackburn, Bolton, Stoke ? It's definitely not old Wigan footage from the 70's.
