I appreciate the Biblical reference in the title. Back in 1953 when this episode was first broadcast American society still appreciated the Bible too.

There were many Biblical references in American Society during these years. In many of the "Gunsmoke" radio episodes Chester generally hums parts of the old Gospel Hymn, "Love Lifted Me". That particular Hymn must have been a favorite of Parley Baer's. It you listen to all of the radio shows, this Hymn can oftentimes be heard. In the episode "Greater Love" scripture is actually quoted and it caused the criminal to give up. The Bible is many times used in these stories as was the case during these early years of radio and television. Such is not the case these days.

I think back in them days education wasn’t the same and the answer to the unknown was god. Now everyone has instant access to information so more and more people are becoming atheists.

@@rm_con Your comment is vague and full of sweeping generalizations at best and solely consists of your subjective opinion, with no facts to support your claims. You are also apparently assuming the "information" that people have "access to" is true and accurate. You also imply that the information "everyone" reads leads them to become "atheists" is true and leads them to become "atheists". It appears to me the cause of people turning from our loving Creator is because some believe the lies of Progressive Liberalism.

Spare the rod, spoil the child. . . . Course I don't believe in whipping, but children need discipline. Tragic story.
