My mother and father met at a roller skating rink in 1948. He and his buddies were in the Air Force, she was there with some friends. My first memories is skating with mom and dad while listening to the pipe organ playing. As a teenager my friends and I would go skating almost every Friday or Saturday night. When I got married and had children, my husband and I would take our kids skating. It truly was a great activity to do as a family. 💖

the one we'd had in town since I could remember shut down in the early '00's. I didn't go there so much for the skating as I did for socializing. It's sad to see roller skating rinks go, but I can understand why the owners don't think it's worth it anymore...ppl are *way* too sue happy nowadays, even if you do put up the 'skate at your own risk' signs. Did you ever get to play d.j.? I think ours was a 'whoever's not manning the snack bar,restrooms, or skate rental' type thing.

Disco roller skating was the thing when I was a kid. But when the 80s came, disco was out and so were roller rinks. Many of them closed. This video doesn’t have the trains we used to do where you would get whipped around and fly off over the rails out of control. AHHHHH wholesome injuries.
@aleafox1675 Жыл бұрын
When I was a child I remeber watching theis 80 year old man that was more agile that any of the youth. He would spin, skate fast, had amazing fast foot work, he even did jumps. Everyone was amazed with his expertise in roller skating. The man was amazing and he was in his 80's when it was the early 70's. When I became an adult my husband was a manager for a roller skating rink, and I was one of his assistants. Used to go to siminars about skating along with managers and rink owners from around the world. Sadly because of computer games, and everything else you can do on the web, like social media, the skating bussiness has almost went out of style. Now rinks make most of their profits from birthday paries, and homeschoolers as a part of physcial education and religious groups. Music has also played a big role because of the quality of the lyrics, parents do not want their young children to be exposed to the words used. So the rink ends up playing older music that is sutible for young ears, unless it's a private party like christian groups, then religious music is played, or on Friday and saturday nights bleeped out music that you hear on the radio is played for the teens. Teens these days have become out of control and that is another problem so security must be hired to protect the other teenage patrons. This also increases the price of skating, and birthday parties, food, and private parties. Look, I like computers, use them all the time because of my career, but I also played and communicated, formed friendships because of activities like skating. I was fit, and healthy because of activities like rollar skating. Now look at many youngsters today, overweight, have difficulties in forming bonds, communicating, and with thier eyes just to name some of the issues too much time spent spent on electronics. It''s made us unheatlthy, both mentally and physcially!

@scratchdog22164 жыл бұрын
Born in '65. Never got the hang of roller/ice skating but grew up in the Suffield/Enfield CT area and have many childhood memories of Riverside Park. Went almost weekly for the car races. I remember the big concrete thing in the middle of the parking-lot that had 'NO DIVING' printed on it and my mother explained about the wading pool that had been there and was filled in to make room for more cars. We also visited Mountain Park in Holyoke, MA once in a while too. Gosh what great times.

I used to love going to my local rink during organized events, like b'day parties and extracurricular outings from school that the class would get as rewards for high performance on tests(usually also involved some killer pizza!). The last time I went to my local rink was on a church trip with my then boyfriend's church. They went out of business not long after that. My mom wouldn't let me go unescorted because she was convinced that that's where the drug dealers and gang members congregated. I couldn't skate for crap, but I think the appeal for me was more because of the fact that I could socialize with kids my age. Once a month, K-12, we would receive a calendar with events on it. I used to love the end of the parties and social get togethers bc they had games on the rink floor at the end of it. I dreaded falling down while people were skating bc a girl at my cousin's b'day party told me that she knew a girl who fell,and the ppl behind her couldn't stop...she wound up having her arm skated over, and a really bad concussion.
