I have an OLED E6, bought new end of year 2016. Amazing screen, but maybe a bit too early technology wise, even more for their anti-burn-in features or lack of. I knew about that risk when I bought it, so I'm not complaining. I have enjoyed that screens for years, consuming amazing contents, so no regrets. 6 years later, I have a few burn-in spots. First the subtitles area, since it's white most of the time, I can see a matrix of 8 digit segments all over the place down there. Also the Netflix logo in the bottom right corner, my red pixels are almost all dead over there (Netflix should propose a no logo option for those embedded app, same for the others...). Now I'm not looking for something in the app anymore, but instead on my cell, and send it to the TV. I have also the time progress bar for I think KZbin and most likely also Netflix strip ghosting my screen, left to right. I'm writing all of that, not to shout foul at LG or anyone, but more to share a true experience and maybe help other preparing better themselves. My TV has around 11000 hours of loyal services and I'm still happy about it despite those side-effects and will probably buy another OLED to replace it.

My CX which I use as a monitor has 11,500 hours on it, mostly productivity and no burn in. But I also keep the backlight at 40 and the display in SDR mode when not gaming, which drastically lowers the peak brightness, and I suspect... drastically reduces the rate at which the pixels decay. But I think they have also added more burn-in prevention features and increased the size of the red subpixel between when our displays were produced.

Integer scaling looks terrible in my view, nothing like running the resolution natively even when considering 1080p on a UHD display. The edges of objects become blocky, it does not look good up close at all. It works well for certain titles with 'simple' cartoony graphics or if you're sitting far enough from the monitor that the edges aren't well-defined. But it makes many games look like they have Minecraft edges when they shouldn't. It isn't a feature I miss being added to monitors to be honest - maybe nice as an option for some to use I suppose.

G-Sync module is such a wasted opportunity..... it a fucking FPGA, yet you can't do anything with it, there are monitors with G-Sync module that have horrible gamma correction/overdrive settings, are locked to nvidia only for g-sync etc. If they made it flashable with open source or semi-open source firmware so you can fix the issues that i.e. Dell created, it would justify the extra cost.

Oh boy Holywood would cry so loud that an unlocked FPGA with open source on it would be able to get around the HDCP encryption somehow or something. And Nivida would hate if people make it work better with AMD GPUs. I use my pc for a couple like 2hrs a day and on weekends maybe up to 5hrs when playing games. I was using a oled tv for about a year, i initially noticed the screen is nowhere as bright as it used to be, when it was new I used to be comfortable with it on 100% brightness and it would still be visible during the day with curtains opened, after about a year it was just not being enough and colors where also not as good, then i noticed burnin on white loading screens or on videos when there is a White background or maybe explosion. When i noticed it even if it was a small amount it really drove me mad. I started looking out for it and i saw it all the time and it made using my pc annoying as i started turning of the monitor when i leave even to go to the bathroom for one second, i really hate hiding the windows taskbar but i did so to avoid more burn in i just couldn't take it anymore.I even noticed it on my OnePlus phone. I bought a neo g7 43" to replace my main screen and i downgraded my OnePlus 8 to a realme x3 superzoom, oled has left a bad taste in my mouth and i really dislike it. Yeah when it's new it's a 10/10 but already after a year it's not a 10/10 anymore, i rather get a lcd with miniled which will be a 8/10 or 9/10 forever untill i decide to upgrade or it breaks for other reasons. Not because the pixels are dying slowly. I hate oled, already upgraded my phone 3 times because of burn in and not because I actually needed to upgrade. And to be honest my lg oled looked better when new but after just a year it looks worse than any standard lcd. Really a 10/10 that goes down to a 6/10 in a year of use is not worth it for me over a 9/10 which remains a 9/10 forever

Now I bought a 42"C2 but I kept my 32" Samsung VA panel as a second monitor for work and windows and the C2 only runs TV/Games/Videos content (most of what is desired) That way no burn in ever and I kept a monitor that is worthless for resale at this date.

I am a recent glossy convert due to my 48CX. Honestly, I remember glossy monitors being a nightmare back in the day and constantly having to battle sunlight by putting blankets and things over the windows (didn't know about blackout curtains back then) if I wanted to use my computer during the day. It was only thanks to the allure of OLED I was willing to give glossy another shot, and figured I would just buy blackout curtains or whatever, but surprisingly reflections haven't been an issue. I think due to advancements in brightness, anti-reflective coatings and polarizers etc. glossy screens look a lot better and don't have nearly the drawbacks that they used to. Granted I am also using one of the highest end displays on the market. So I have no idea if the experience transfers to midrange and budget displays. I suspect a lot of people are like me and so scarred from trying to use crappy glossy monitors in poorly light controlled rooms that they just completely wrote them off. Probably going to be a long uphill battle for manufacturers to convince people to want glossy monitors. Because even though I am now a convert, if I had the option to buy a matte OLED at the time, I would have taken it in a heartbeat.

I went from an Alienware monitor that had a G-sync module to a Samsung Odyssey G7 that is G-sync compatible, and I gotta say I do miss that G-sync module sometimes. I never had any of the issues I have on this screen (vrr flicker at various refresh rates, on/off vrr control toggle that allegedly increases input lag but fixes this issue, vrr range only going down to ~80hz). To be fair some of these issues are purely the fault of the screen itself and not really due to lack of a G-sync module, but my LG C1 also has some flickering at the lower end of the VRR range, and the vrr range only goes down to ~43hz (which is surprisingly annoying because I've found I can tolerate 40fps for some games, but LFC just doesn't cut it for me). It's not the end of the world, but I do miss just setting it and forgetting it, and being able to cap my fps at literally whatever and having VRR just work.

re: black frame insertion on OLED: I would posit that there's a chance that these two actually pair _very badly_ together. If it's not qd-oled you aren't just turning on and off the backlight, you're turning on and off the color too, which might introduce overshoot/undershoot issues. It might also wear out the oled pixels faster because you're putting more peak instantaneous power into the oled pixels.

Glossy always wins as no crystal effect, better sharpness and more contrast as matte panels catches any photons in the room covering all with matte reflections. While you can add antireflective coating on glossy screen (same coating as on the lens) you cannot do this with matte screens. The problem is that majority of users still thinks that matte screens "reflects less", while in reality it is the opposite.
@ilusjon
@ilusjon Жыл бұрын
Yes you can make a matte screen glossy and vice versa... ebay has sheets of screen protectors you can buy. And I would argue the further the distance of the matte laminate the worse the effects are, so it should really be as close as possible to the pixel and therefore they should default to matte. As for the "majority of users" statement, in reality its not an opposite they diffuse light that hits the surface reducing the peak brightness of a light source viewed as a reflection, which is what you want. If you want to see your eyes staring back at you in the middle of the night be my guest...

Regarding strobing, perceived brightness is, IIRC, the peak brightness, not the average brightness. As long as the lights are strobed faster than human cognition, the maximum brightness is the perceived brightness. This is why many LEDs are driven at 60Hz, including on LED automobile headlights. It reduces the thermal load on the LED (average power) while increasing perceived brightness. Some basic work done by undergrads in an embedded systems course found that human eyes could perceive light from pulses as short as tens of microseconds. So, yes, strobing on OLEDs could be great, but it would depend heavily on the capacitance of the OLEDs (higher capacitance would require higher, more damaging drive voltage for shorter pulses) and the dynamic behavior of the OLEDs. For all I know, OLEDs have a cycle lifetime and on/off cycles wear them down.

OLED burn-in will always be a problem as long as (A) I have to care about it and (B) OLED displays need to be packaged with burn-in protection software (that tends to be buggy and a general PITA). If regular OLED burns in at 500 hours (3 months of 40 hour weeks), it has to get to 3 years of 40 hour weeks for me to consider going back to OLED. Until then, mini-LED gets brighter, I don't have to care about burn-in, you can barely tell there's brightness zones in real content (with more than ~400 zones for a 32" monitor) and I can use it in a bright room. QD-OLED makers talk about specular highlights a lot, but the full panel brightness is just as pathetic and embarrassing as WOLED.

What I don't understand about this new hype for OLED monitors in 2023 is that as you mentioned in the video, OLED technology, no matter how much prevention it has, still has a risk of burn in. I just saw the new G8 Oled in a Samsung store and it's all burned. I have thrown away 3 OLED TVs, which were amazing, but didn't last more than 2 years, and now I see that all the new monitors are OLED or QD OLED that also manifest this problem. Burnin's guarantee is not the solution, since it is respected in few countries. Their business is that you change the monitor every two years. If you leave a static image with red or yellow, it burns very quickly. I ended up buying a 4k IPS monitor for this reason. I can't compare the image quality with an oled, but I also don't want to live paranoid taking care of a monitor (as I did with TVs)

Regarding burn-in... I've had my gaming PC connected to my 55" curved LGC6 TV for 6 years, and burn-in started back in 2018... Fast forward, my screen is a mess. That said, I do understand that newer panel tech is supposed to be better, but I'll have to do a deep dive when purchasing my next TV, later this year. To add, I don't think pixel shifting works as well as it should. Back in 2007, I had a Dell XPS connected to a 50" LG Plasma, which had pixel shifting, and never got any burn-in. It's sad that Plasma technology is gone.

glossy monitor argument has a fatal hole: glossy TV's. TV's are even more commonly in bright rooms, yet they are all gloss. same with laptop screens, your typical use for a laptop is in a bright area, yet glossy screen. its just thats what they made for years because people think thats what they want. apple makes glossy displays because they look better. I bought a korean monitor a few years ago with a glossy samsung panel and stuff looked amazing, including awesome blacks, and this was an IPS.

For 540Hz you need under 1.8ms average. I don't think that any classical paneltech can achieve those extremly low responsetimes on average. I think the clarity between a 240Hz Oled and the 540TN would be more or less the same but the picturequality will be way way better on the 240Hz Oled. Picturequality matters even in an eSport enviroment. It is way easier to see someone when the colors pop more. A TN picture is often to flat to get a good colorseperation which results in a worse visability overall. Oled also feels way more responsive as any TN, VA or IPS panel i've ever tested. The ultrafast 240Hz and 360Hz feel worse than an 120Hz Oled. Oled feels more like the old tube monitors but with better colors :D I think even an eSport pro will choose the 240Hz Oled over the 540Hz TN when he/she has the choise.

A very well tuned TN panel could reach 1.8ms average, and don't forget this is meant to be a brand new panel. Maybe the panel will struggle to get 1.8ms across the refresh rate range, but realistically it only really needs perform well at it's maximum refresh rate since it's only really for a handful of esports titles. I think there is close to zero chance we will be seeing any of these 240hz oled monitors being used in esports tournaments (at least in csgo). The real battle will be whether or not the new 540hz panel gets adopted over the XL2566K with it's 360hz Dyac, and I would guess that 360hz dyac will be marginally sharper than 540hz sample and hold. Zowie also has the massive advantage of being the encumbant in the esports space, both amongst tournament organisers and players.

The other thing with OLED strobing, you are not flashing the back-light, you are flashing the pixel itself, so if it takes 0.3ms to get to blue, it will take 0.3ms to get back to black. For the next frame it is starting from black again and there is never a grey to grey time.

The OLED burn in question and why manufacturers aren’t talking about is the fact is it’s simply no longer a significant risk. If it were, manufacturers would not bother with selling them due to high rates of repairs, returns etc. Can it happen in extreme cases? Yes. Are you with typical usage likely to see it? No. Bit surprised at the notion too they haven’t taken certain refinements forward, they have most certainly. Other channels have covered this in depth. No one should concern themselves deeply on this point, and never forget - ALL monitor technologies have a potential for burn in on some level…. Do you worry about it? I think part of the reason why Samsung went with the micro-HDMI and mini-DP is port orientation. Dell's version of the monitor has the ports vertical to the monitor along the bottom edge (they plug in parallel to the panel). That gives them a lot more space to put in the full-size ports, which are both wider and deeper. The Samsung monitor has the ports on the rear face, and the depth of the monitor is quite limited there.

The issue of brightness with OLEDs and BFI (black frame insertion) becomes less of a problem at higher refresh rates and duty cycles. While it may not be possible to achieve the same MPRT as with strobed LCDs, MPRT can be made adjustable, allowing for a reasonable blur reduction with OLED BFI without a significant decrease in brightness. With adjustable MPRT, users can choose the balance between blur and brightness. Crosstalk is not a problem with OLEDs as they do not "strobe" like LCD backlights, but instead use a pixel-on and pixel-off pass to adjust the scanwindow size thus changing mprt. OLEDs have more potential for motion clarity, particularly at higher refresh rates, where LCDs are hindered by crosstalk.

(When capped) That said, I have no complaints with this monitor whatsoever. But, being able to actually produce 35% more visible frames is definitely an upgrade. Just a marginal one ;). I agree overall that OLED 175 is virtually 300+Hz IPS/va/tn. And the pixels are dang lightning quick. Generally my goal with 240 is running with no frame cap to increase my 1% lows. Which in some games, is as low as 130 due to capping at 163. Whereas running uncapped, my 1% lows are closer to 200. It's not so much the high end of Hz range I want to see as much as I want my lows maxed out for maximum butteryness. 13700k/4090 build, fwiw The mathed out difference between 165/240hz is about 1.5ms overall. When we are granular already with the speeds the oleds produce, percentage wise, it's not insignificant. Not to mention, a smoother overall rendering sequence. Yes, I'm fully aware I'm splitting hairs between 175/240 both OLED, but, if they are there to split, split them I shall! Haha

@@OscyJack- that doesn't make any sense. That's not how it works at all. 1% lows will be the same regardless. They are caused by bottlenecks in the system or game engine which will vary depending on scene. It could be the GPU, CPU or memory causing the worst frames.

Regarding gsync module, I see what you mean about the disadvantages with cost, ports, heat, etc… but are there still any advantages to that technology? A while ago I had read that it made a difference in terms of variable overdrive performance, working all the way down to 1hz, and input latency?
@goblinphreak2132

G-sync is the same as freesync which are both built on adaptive sync. The only good thing about g-sync is forcing a quality standard. When you buy freesync, the monitor manufacturer will be lazy and not use all the tech available because they arent forced to. G-sync they are forced to. Thats the only difference. Generally i never even use freesync/gsync because my pc is high end enough to get enough fps to match or exceed refresh rate. I generally recommend monitors that suit the user. If for example a friend were playing 1080 and average 144fps i would NOT recommend a 240hz or 360hz monitor. I would recommend a 144hz monitor. Because when a 240hz or 360hz with gsync or freesync enabled drops to a lower refresh rate to match lower fps, the pixel response gets worse. Monitors are "tuned" for max refresh rate. The only display type that doesn't change pixel response based on refresh rate is OLED. So budget wise you should buy a monitor that meets your performance and does not exceed it.

I'd prefer a g-sync module in my Neo G8 if it was up to me, I'd gladly pay the premium. The monitor flickers during loading, or parts where the fps is fluctuating. I never experienced this with my previous monitor with hardware g-sync.

When I got my 4k 144hz and 3080 I expected to switch to 1080p native quite often, but so far I don't think I've done it once. In the cases I needed the performance, DLSS2 was enough. Ever since I switched to the 4090, I haven't even thought about it, 4k all the time

2160p is insane. I switched from a 4K 144hz IPS to a 3440x1440p AW QD-OLED. I use DSR to downscale a higher than native resolution, which helps a ton. But I hope to see an actual OLED monitor at 2160p or 5160x2160 UW. 4090 is the ultimate luxury. I was hesitant but ultimately glad I got one.

1ms solution would be to let them use it, but also invent a standardized metric for "honest" response time, that can be used in marketing alongside 1ms lies. Kind of like vesa HDR ratings. Idk who would do it though, probably nobody.

My 2080ti didn’t struggle with it and the extra pixels (upgrade from 1440) were in just the right places to boost gaming and productivity. In my opinion, 4k adds a ton more vertical pixels that are useless in gaming since they expand your vertical fov. The sky and ground are rarely that interesting. Increase my horizontal fov all day long. I love that…. 1440 for productivity is just a tad too low, otherwise, I would just stick to that resolution.

I think the reason monitor companies mainly make matte displays is because businesses tend to prefer them. I have seen businesses using gaming monitors for work monitors, and glossy isn't the greatest under the blaring florescent lighting. Still personally I think glossy still looks better than matte even in bright rooms. Since it sits in one spot you can literally just turn your setup or move the lamp and you don't have the same glare or in many cases matte displays washing out the entire image honestly looks worse to me.

I think the Gsync module is still relevant in the high end product segment and having the module does offer the best experience. I'm happy they finally let Gsync function with the open standards though. I use Gsync with my RTX 3080 12gb on a Monoprice Dark Matter 27" 1440p 180hz IGZO-IPS monitor, a great lesser-known monitor. I have never been satisfied when viewing the UFO test until doing so on this monitor. I was honestly in disbelief, zero motion blur / ghosting. I think the IGZO TFT Backplane is helping out with pixel response times or something. This is a monitor to consider with an MSRP of $350 but on sale more often than not for as low as $200. The Sharp 10bit IGZO-IPS panel sets it apart from the rest. It also has a USB C with power and display over USB.

People are already reporting burn-in issues with their QD-OLED online. Hard to pin down sample size, but seems to be more people who are trying to use it as a normal productivity monitor. Seems ridiculous to spend the price of a high end gaming PC on a monitor alone and have to baby it and not have basic functionality (backgrounds, taskbars, word/excel, etc.) without having to worry about doing permanent damage.

Hi Tim, you are just assuming for the Smart TV functionality. It might be true to a minor degree only. TVs were cheaper than high end monitors even 20 years ago when there was no "Smart" functionality in TVs. I think it goes like that because of volume. Hundreds or thousand times more TVs are sold than monitors, so the tooling and development cost is basically zero for a TV and not so much for a monitor. And of course high end monitors are a niche that can be sold at a higher price.

Some mobile devices only have micro HDMI or mini DP, not the full-sized ports. So if you wanna hook them up to an external display, you may not have other options. Now that USB-C is standard, i'm assuming those ports are gonna get more and more uncommon. But i've never heard of someone using those for space or for a "sleek look." Only because the devices didn't offer other options.
