The time works out great for me. Finish lunch and listen to the video. Just a little about me. First band that just blew me away was Dead Kennedys. Walked into a club in L.A. and it was like mind altering. Found Townes VanZandt after hearing Willie and Merle cover Pancho and Lefty. Townes is just the best to me. If I had to go to the proverbial desert island with one record, it would be Alice in Chains Unplugged.

Hi from Texas. He’s doing a lot of old songs that literally were written on cattle drives in the 1800’s. Don Edwards and Ian Tyson are a couple older guys who used to keep these songs alive. He’s doing an excellent job of carrying the torch.

Hello from Texas (San Antonio). My forebears, John, William and Abner "Ab" Blocker were cattlemen who drove their cattle north to Kansas and Montana from Texas. This song is an ode to the cattlemen and the yodeling that was used by those cowboys who could sing as a means to steady their herds. The cattle were calmed by the tender yodels and the familiar voice of the men they knew.

That noise he makes is his cow call. It goes with the name of cow poke. Cow pokes work with cattle and the cow poke in the story has moved from ranch to ranch and that’s his freedom. Cool thing about this story is it represents the passed and present cowboys.

The 94 Club me and the wife have been looking to go their a few years now! Would love to get there next year. I’ve always been into rock and metal haha my wife introduced me to country music years ago and I brushed it off when I was younger. When I started to truly listen to the words I was hooked. This genre just tells stories and makes you feel in a whole different way any other genre can!

Definitely go if you can brother, I had the best time last year. A couple of my friends that are into country are big rock and metal fans. I’m into 90/00s hip-hop, punk-rock and country... but mainly country. But everyone listens to music for different things, for me, like you it’s for the words and the message. I’ve been through some pretty dark times in the past and country feels like such a good outlet to remove any negative thoughts. Tomorrow’s upload is Townes Van Zandt and I get a bit to into the review 😅

Awesome song first came out in the 50’s colter does it amazingly well, he’s got a way of wailing it through the soul, by far my favorite version. Try his song Happy Reunion. From Fort Worth, Tx Unusually catch a video around lunch every couple days or so.

Hey Clubster, Jimbo here, to go on a waffle inspired by your reaction to Colter's cowpoke. The tune was originally written and performed by Stan Jones. A shit ton of country artists have recorded the tune, Eddy Arnold and Hank Williams Junior both nailed it. The includes a vocal technique called yodeling. Coulter wrote a song called thirteen silver dollars that references the father of country music, Jimmie Rodgers, who recorded blue yodel number 9. Clearly, Coulter has studied the Master's. Fun fact, Johnny Cash and Louis Armstrong recorded blue yodel number 9 in the 70's and can be found on KZbin. Jimmie Rodgers and Louis Armstrong had performed the tune in the 1930s. Johnny could not yodel worth a shit but he nailed the performance, along with Satchmo. Shows the influence of blues and jazz in country music. Profoundly beautiful.

This is a really good cover by Colter Wall. Loved it, but then I've really liked most of what I've heard him do. Another artist you might want to check out, especially if you like a bit of humor added to your music along with the messages, is Hayes Carll. I've been listening to him for a while now and he always puts me in a good mood.

Love your reviews! Love Colter! Cracks me up how bad the closed captioning is on you two guys! They get about 20% of what Colter says correct, and 50% of yours! Saskatchewan 1891 is the first song I heard of his,amd it freaked me out. Sentimental favorite for that first feeling he gave me. The clip on youtube is from a radio station, and he was 19 at the time, and the closest things to Johnny Cash I've heard in awhile.

The “northern Montana” joke they make at the beginning is a shot at his homeland, Saskatchewan sayings it’s nothing more than just northern Montana. He jabs back with “speaking of Wyoming” lol I’ve met a Colter a few times at shows and he really is a genuine guy and is a lot of fun to be around. He hung out with us outside of a show in Asheville NC for several hours one night just talking music.

okay, cowpoke is sort of a nickname I guess for a cowboy. It's generally used to refer to someone who may be old and/or being a cowboy is all they know. It can be used in the context of either "oh that's an old cowpoke right there" or "he's just some cowpoke" or even a combination of the two. The whole song is describing a cowpoke. The part that says "I'm rich but I'm broke" isn't as philosophical to reference rich in time, it's the dilemma that ranchers have always faced. To invest in cattle, you're dumping all of your money into these animals that then become your assets, and if it was a vehicle you'd be rich, but cattle (especially back in the day where cattle rustling was a common occurrence) are unpredictable animals that could die or get lost/stolen very easily, so you never count them as money to spend before you've actually sold them. So in a sense you're technically rich, but really because you can't depend as much on the investment, you only have as much money as you've got. Cows have always been a hard thing to invest in, so normally you don't have much spending money left, since its sort of all-in if you want the best chance at making your money back. The part "So I'll pick up a ten-spot in Prescott I know, riding the broncs in the big rodeo" is the thing that fed the rodeo culture back then. it was a cowboys gambling game. Because he's referring to being low on funds at the beginning of the verse, he's saying that he'll go to the rodeo Prescott he knows, so he's been there before. Pick up a ten-spot is saying he'll enter in a draw for a horse, and whatever bronc he draws, he'll know how it bucks already and be able to ride it better and win more easily. He'll also know what kind of competition is frequent there and what chances he has of winning. My grandpa used to do the same thing back then when they were low on money. Okay know that I've written a huge essay on it, I hope this helped lol

That little mini-yodel Colter does hearkens back to Jimmie Rodgers. Jimmie worked on the railroads in the 1920's and was exposed to black workers who played the blues. Jimmie borrowed heavily from the blues, but added some other elements, including the yodeling. He is generally considered the father of country music. Here is some rare video of him from the 1930's. Between Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family you pretty much have the beginnings of popular country music as we know it. Fascinating history to read about them and so great that there are still recordings to listen to out here.

I believe Colter Wall to be a fan of Jimmie Rogers. He recorded a song of his, mule skinner and references another one of his songs called "blue yodel number 9" in a song called 13 silver dollars. None of Jimmies songs are played on radio or tv today. Except for a ken burns documentary series, played on are Public broadcast channels, on country music last year. So you have to go looking for them yourself to find his music. One thing to note if you ever listen to Rodgers, is while he was a train man in the 1920s he had to give it up because he contracted a disease called tuberculosis that was a death sentence at the time. No antibiotics then. Before he ever recorded his first song. And he died abt 1934 while recording his last album in New York city. It was the depression and the sales from his last recordings sessions were what he had to leave his wife and daughter. Great songs, great voice. Another old cowboy song that Colter preforms an outstanding cover of is "I Ride an Old Paint / Leavin' Cheyenne." It's an American folk song that dates back roughly to the 1920s. You can find a great version here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q33Tnn95r751oNk. Also, his song "Plain to See Plainsman" is a really sweet ballad about him being homesick while on tour. There's a good version over on the GemsOnVHS KZbin channel, which has a nice mix of country artists in general. Also, since you like Colter, you might also enjoy Corb Lund. I highly recommend his songs "Horse Soldier, Horse Soldier," "The Truth Comes Out," and "Never Not Had Horses." Always enjoy seeing your videos pop up on my recommendations! Keep up the great work!
