I have seen Colter live when he was on tour with Cody Jinks & he sounds just like this live. One of the best shows I’ve ever been to when he was only 24 at the time! Colter will be a true legend one day with that voice.

Love this kid so much, he gives me a real old school outlaw style, similar in some way to some of johnny cash's work. Real talent. Great vid bud - Ian

A black top is what they call the darker pavment on a side road in smaller Southern towns. I'm from alabama, if you get directions from an older person they may say, go up though the next light, then take a right on the 2nd blacktop. So he's homeless, traveling musician, and drunk. Torchered. Anyway, that's my take on it. I play as well and love this guy and his travis picking and that damn voice makes the hair on my arms raise up. Btw, you have a stellar outlook yourself. Nice choice of words and honesty. Probably shouldn't be over looked. I bet you write good stuff too. Like to hear it.

Some more slang used was Coyote meaning smuggler and Nickajack an area in Eastern Tennessee and Alabama. I would like to suggest Caroline for a Colter song.

Country, I've heard described, tells a story. I worked in a library for a number of years, and I've always been fascinated by people who can paint a picture with words. You can learn to write a proper sentence, but you can't learn what Colter has.

I have this saying I use a lot 'You get better at storytelling with every story you tell' - It applies a lot to our favourite songwriters! But you're right, I don't think you can necessarily be taught these things.

@@OliWilford I am from the American South. In the South, storytelling is really a rich tradition/heritage. There are definitely things that I'd like to not claim, about the South, but I will the tradition of storytelling.

Well done good sir. Well done. Colter has been doin' the whole cowboy thing, wranglen' cows. Even on horseback during the Covid break. He must have been busy because theirs some new songs out now. Oh and the "black top" is asphalt. A cheap way to pave a road/ parking lot.

Lot of good country popping up in recent years. Living in the southern US, I've had to listen to the terrible country that was dominant for so long. My cousin has been relaying these new and refreshing country artists like Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson, Colter Wall, Marcus King, Cody Jinks, etc.

Reading through initial comments, I see where Coulter has taken his experience as in itinerant musician and to make this ditty. While the downside to this lifestyle is evident, he also gets to be the bad boy that women are drawn to. Most guys would love to try this lifestyle, sowing wild oats, if only for a time. Colter's song, 13 Silver Dollars, takes another look at this topic, and is a much superior song.
