It's annoying when Ollie (a guy who has Everested & claims that he maxes out on a 50-11 gear ratio downhill) says he's an "average" guy... if that's true, a whole lot of us are less than average.
@thekeytoairpower4 жыл бұрын
I have not everested, but I can max out a 50-11 downhill.... I would consider myself less than average when it comes to serious cyclists... That said, I don't think Ollie is claiming to be an average cyclist. He is claiming to have unremarkable genes. He is saying that his performance is based on hard work, not innate ability. He is basically saying that anyone with hard work, correct equipment and proper mentoring can do amazing things. If you are a normal, you will never be the best, but you can maximise your potential and do something startling.

Well Ollies FTP before he started this whole 3 month Training was ~ 290-300w in roadbike position. His weight seems somewhere aorund 72kg ? Thats pretty average for someone who does ride a lot of bike and does regular structured training. However compared to guys who just ride for fun and feeling fresh air while not training at all -> he ofc is an insane machine. So it completely depends on what you define as average . Average as in roadbike rider who sees it as a sport and does structured training to be as fit as possible. Yepp. Average as in : Someone who rides his bike to enjoy nature has 20kg overweight and doesnt even know his FTP -> then ofc no he is not average

To put this into perspective, as far as distance-per-revolution of one complete pedal stroke, here are the meters traveled in one full revolution, see where your regular race bike fits in: 61/16 = 8.51 meters compared to a 53/11 = 12.38 meters. So it comes down to RPMs and torque equalling to maximize speed. I used to run a 56/16 = 7.82 meters on my Lotus all the time and hardly ever had to shift (good old days, perfect gearing in my opinion, for both top-end speed and max torque for everyday riding. If you need a quick calculation, feel free to write. Cheers, and congrats to Ollie, you go man!

Get Ollie to do the hour record on the Merx set up in Mexico. Then we have Ollie as Merx and Ollie with power savings. We also have the Merx numbers. Merx with power savings can then be calculated. You just need to fly Ollie to Mexico and get him to do another hour record. Solved.
