In a radically secular society like France, everything is up for rudicule, parody etc. This is particularly true for religion, morality and cultures. When it comes to mocking their secularism, that is where they draw the line.

I knew then Father Sean O'Malley O.F.M. Cap. [?] here in DC many years ago; that said the sex abuse crisis ain't over. the Chrch's CYA attitude ignores that the damage done is far more than to individual survivors. Families parishes and communities are still scarred having been ignored by the local church's and Rome's callous indifference. Every ordinary should follow the example of the King of Nineveh in the Book of Jonah,, put on sack cloth, sit in ashes and beg the laity's collective forgiveness for the grievous sin of failing to protect them as good shepherds should. The whole church is still suffering in agony while Rome pretends that dealing with survivors one by one and curtailing possible abuse in the future is enough. The church must wake up before it loses even more then it already has.

Feels so oddly like ageism that the Vatican won't allow cardinals to vote for a pope after the age of 80. We have popes who are over 80, so why on earth would we think them incapable of making good choices in voting for the next Pope? in fact, I would suggest the combination of their (God-willing) accumulated wisdom along with being at an age & stage in life where ambition for future positions/titles has passed, makes them an ideal, objective candidate to elect the next Pope. Or even BE the next Pope. And John, I am so glad you are well. Please...consider using KZbin's feature where you can leave a post for your audience in these situations. That way, we know all is well.

John, you are much too thin, that white shirt you have on just hangs off of you. Please eat a second or third portion of pasta for lunch and supper, Archbishop-designate Henning succeeded Bishop Thomas Tobin as head of the Providence, RI, Diocese. One news source called Tobin the most divisive figure in the state. Are the Olympics going on? The only reason I know about the Olympics is that when I grab a bite to eat in a restaurant, the Olympics are on television. If I remember correctly, Los Angele will host the Olympics in 2028 and Brisbane in 2032. The IOC would like Rome to host the games in 2036, if the Olympics are still viable. Istanbul has shown some interest in for hosting the games as has South Africa.

Had not all these bishops, etc. said anything at all about the Olympic opening ceremony fiasco, it would have just blown over. In fact at the ceremony itself, the only people who would have seen it would have been those directly opposite on the river viewing area. Of course, the media made a big story about it which is no great surprise. Also, especially after your exceptional and worthy praise of archbishop elect Henning’s scriptural wisdom, I wonder if he may have thought of the last Beatitude. And why do we feel that the Pope must make statements on every event in the world? Some are necessary, but some just shouldn’t be thought to be Important enough.

Is there a sane person who thinks the IOC would allow public ridicule of one of the most solemn moments in Christianity? There was a time when bishops received a proper education in Latin and the Roman culture and would immediately be able to clarify the misunderstanding. :)
