This just shows how sprinting events 400m and short are worlds apart from the 1500m/mile and other distance races. Even the jump from the 400m to the 800m is quite a big one. Looking at the athletes' pbs, it makes sense that the 400m sprinters/hurdlers would be the fastest at the mile, and the pure 60m/100m sprinters/hurdlers would be the worst at the mile. The 5:25 runner has a 2:08 pb in the 800m, and only 1 other in the field has an 800m pb list on their World Athletics page. It's impressive that they even finished the mile despite going out suicidal in 16 at the 100m and 33 at the 200m with a massive positive split. This just proves that the training for a sprinter and a (mid) distance runner are worlds apart.

Amazing how different sprinters and distance runners are in their physical morphology. Gabi is the fastest woman in the world right now in the 200 and runs a sub-50 400. In the Olympics she ran with such grace and power. Yet at 800 she was really suffering, her form was deteriorating and she was gasping for air. She hung tough and closed reasonably strong, a testament to her grit. Though I was far from being a good runner I was a DI athlete who tilted more to endurance. I was always astonished at some of my teammate’s, who were much faster, faces after running a mile. Pure agony and utter pain in their expression. I had felt stronger as run progressed and finished long before them.

For anybody thinking of trying out this workout - this workout is insane. Especially, if you are a sprinter. It is meant for very fit, elite athletes, who are under strict supervision of their coach and whose workouts are carefully selected and adapted based on the time of year. Also, they are not running their 100s at 85%. They are running them in 15-16 seconds, which, with a PB of 11.25, is around 70-75%. And as you can see, the break is not a full minute, more like 50 seconds. So, please, don't try this at home unless you know exactly what you're doing.

@@crimsonreaper835 the coach here clearly admits tha the only goal of this workout is to die, HARD. She don't care how fast they're running, they just have to suffer. Some coaches do this in the depth of winter training, like the case here. Some coaches do not do this with their athletes. And, actually, 2 km is not that much volume for a 100/200 sprinter during winter training. Here it's the fact that they already ran a full out mile prior to the hundreds. This is the part that's crazy. Separately these two parts of the workout are OK. But together, it is insane.

Remember that this DOES NOT MEAN that distance events like the mile are more challenging than sprint events, just that distance events are more painful for SPRINTERS than distance events since going UP in distance is generally going to be more painful and taxing on the body than going DOWN in distance (in which case the limitation is not endurance but speed) Arguably, a good sprinter speed endurance or lactic tolerance workout (ex: broken 400s, all out 200s) would be more painful for sprinters than a distance workout (ex: 400x12, mile repeats) would be for distance runners.

@@crimsonreaper835 oh yeah that's gonna be super cool. i don't see arop beating cole/josh/nuguse in the 1500, i mean those guys are literally the olympic podium, but i do think he'll pr / run some times and will beat some of the visiting competitors. he's run 2:13 for 1k and has run sub four for the mile (3:57 in college) and has gotten faster since then so will be cool to see what he's capable of. he'll likely win every 800..... unless Wanyonyi gets involved then it's a battle royale

I'm genuinely stunned by how slow these times are. Gabby Thomas is an outstanding long sprinter. She runs a sub-50 400m. She's tall. She has a beautiful, long stride. Doesn't she do any road work? If she just paced herself, I have to imagine she'd easily be able to break 5 minutes, which would be a solid--not spectacular---time for a high school girl.

If they’re 400m sprinters I’m not shocked but yea I’d expect some closer to 5. If they are 100-200m runners then this is surprisingly fast to me

At the end. They hard work is going pay off and they group is going to be successful

Respect! But makes you wonder if you take the best mid-long distance runners and put them in a sprint what the result would be. Imagine Jacob or Cole Hocker in a 100/200!

Neither of them could beat Gabby Thomas in the 200m

Hocker would be right with her, he has a crazy fast kick. Hard to extrapolate but I bet he’s a 47 second 400 guy.
