In fencing, it is customary to very quickly kiss your opponent during the match, as seen in the second shot. In the third, we see how, in rare cases, opponents fall to the floor in an immediate cuddling session after striking each other. This is considered good sportsmanship, and is a way for competitors to show their undying love for both the sport, and their opponents.

@@grahamhill676 That is correct BUT since i ve done both olympic fencing (sabre) for 16 years and hema fencing for 4 years, i can tell you that "running at each other to get the first hit" has alot more skills and tecniques involved than you think. Also alot of conditioning, training etc. The reason it has gone from "dont get hit" to "get the first hit" is mostly because its a sport and not a "martial art" where you need to survive the fight (and it also needs to be energetic, you dont want 2 fencers staring at eachother for 5 minutes just so one of them "might" make the first move), but again that takes a considerable amount of skill.

I had quite a few collisions fencing epee. But the worst was fencing foil. I collided with my best fencing friend in a tournament. His foil broke and I took the stub in the thigh. No one realized it at first. My friend grabbed a new foil and we went en garde. Then the director called halt and pointed at my leg. It was starting to bleed pretty good. From what I've learned that sort of thing used to happen a lot when young unexperienced nobles would fight each other. When the fight was between experienced ppl they would almost always avoid that sort of risk cus if both of them died then everyone looses, so the fight would mostly be solved with a first blood drawn and deaths were avoided, cus those ppl were important members of society (being nobles)

@@fredericororiz6500 Well, that was why dueling got legally banned in most places by like the 1600s since people who actually mattered dying from it caused all kinds of inconveniences. Which in no way stopped people from doing it illegally anyway until the end of the 19th century or so because _muh honour_ was SRS FKN BZNS and law enforcement was whatevs so, yeah. (It's been said the Great War put the final nail in its coffin because after such industrialised mass slaughter the whole concept became patently ridiculous.) But yeah duelists who had any idea what they were doing took some care to avoid "mutual kill" scenarios - European ones anyway, the Japanese notoriously regarded that sort of thing as a pretty acceptable outcome.

@@snowblow1984 Flexible or not, How hard must one hit for a thick piece of metal to snap, I mean like I've been fencing for 5+ years and have never broken anything except the soles of my shoes lol, Maybe that's cuz' I've been raised asian and if I break anything my mum will break me but that's not the point I'm tryna make. As a fencer you must know how hard you can push a sword until it's breaking point, like c'mon that's pure common sense imo.

@@definingspeed tbh most sports like idk boxing leave someone bleeding after every single match so if you do sports then you have to prepare mentally that something like that might happen sometimes lol. for example my fellow fencers actually break each other's hips from time to time. it happens. i'd actually love to spar with that aggressive dude because he sounds like a challenge

So, I’ve done combat sports for a while, and one thing I’ll never understand is how falling out of the designated area somehow turns athletes into sandbags. Like, I get it if the fall was high or the collision was rough. I’ve fallen out of a few rings and it sure as hell doesn’t feel good. But a lot of fighters react to falling out of the ring like being hit by a freight train.
