One of the best races ever, big respect! Get out in front and stay there wins every time!
@Pupda2 жыл бұрын
Actually, although there are definitely a few exceptions, “Get out in front and stay there” almost never wins. If nothing else the amount of energy expended in riding alone or in a small breakaway (supposedly about 30% more energy) means that by the end of the race the relatively well-rested peloton riders have little trouble in bringing the breakaway back, and most often the longer the breakaway stays out ahead before being caught, the more likely they’ll finish behind the entire peloton. The only reason that it worked on this day was because the peloton let the breakaway get so far ahead, and because they had lost track of how many were in that breakaway - it appears that only roughly half the riders knew that there were three riders up the road in the later stages of this race. By your theory the five riders in the real breakaway at the start (two other pairs - Chile and Paraguay, and Ethiopia and Eritrea - also jumped out from the peloton but faded early) should have finished at the top of the standings, yet two - Oberholzer (South Africa) and Looser (Namibia) - “got out front” but were caught by the middle of the race and didn’t even finish, while Shapira (Israel) and Plichta (Poland) also “ got out front” and made it to the finish but were caught by the peloton on the track and fished 24th and 27th respectively (out of 31 official finishers). They got out in front and stayed in front, yet barely finished… Kiesenhofer is an exceptional rider - her success is mostly in time trials (although at the time she was also the defending Austrian national road race champion) so she was well suited to riding alone, and on this day conditions and circumstances favored her. But as a rule, getting out front mostly gets you a little TV coverage - “ fifteen minutes of fame” - and an early return to the team bus.

the best part is the female announcer being in total denial on who was gonna win till late in the race
@bitchoflivingblah2 жыл бұрын
That was the case for the UK commentators also, in complete denial, saying there was little chance of the break staying away, they only changed their tune really late in the day. For me it adds to the magic of the race, the sheer improbability of it. The best cycling race I've ever seen men or women. And we know she's clean.

Annex to my earlier comments: (I discovered later that) In his article for Associated Press Dave Skretta wrote that Italian Elisa Longo Borghini knew there still must have been one more rider out in front who wasn't caught (= Anna Kiesenhofer): Because Elisa understands a bit of german and had listened to the Germans who kept their riders well informed. Without race radio, the only way how the Germans could have done so was via handy... So, if the Germans were able to inform their riders, why not the Dutch as well???

Looking back it seems strange the presenters spent so much time talking about Van Vleuten at the end instead of analyzing Kiesenhofer's ride.
@oscar0605496 ай бұрын
I agree - and I find it more than just strange. In fact, on several occasions during the broadcast, the male Australian announcer vasted a lot of time for either bombastic exaggerations, or to jabber about less important subjects while missing the essential ones. For instance, towards the end of the broadcast they showed a replay of Anna's two tremendous attacks (the first at the start and the decisive one with 41,5 km to go), while he kept small-talking at length about the Dutch team management's blunder who failed to inform its riders about the fact that Anna K. was up in front and won the race in style - Anna would have deserved better than that... Kind regards!

I enjoyed watching this race for a second time now in Aug '24, having remembered about it while watching Paris Olympics. Now, as on first view, I rooted for the underdog. How can you not hope for the impossible to happen. I mean, to be out alone for 40 km means spending 30% more energy by going directly against the wind. I bet none of the Dutch women came anywhere close to being in front of the peloton for 40 km. Does that mean if team radios were allowed the winner was going to be the same? Likely not, since Team NL would have controlled the race. (however bronze was from Team IT, so nothing is ever certain) On that particular day Anna K showed incredible stamina. The Dutch were probably the strongest but gambled/overplayed on their strength and lost. Anna showed incredible heart and it was sweet to see her win against the odds and without a team comparable to NL. I have mixed feelings whether radios should be allowed but I definitely enjoy the Olympics road race more than the Tour de France, where this win would (probably) not have been possible.

04:19:36 The Dutch did such a nice work at the front for the silver medal. The attack from the back of the group by van der Breggen, van Vleuten blocking, then places herself in a no mans land, sneaking up at the wheel of van der Breggen, and when van Vleuten attacks from there no one have her wheel or the legs to follow. Interesting footage also of a confused van Vleuten and her dutch teammates after the race..
@florianmeier3186 Жыл бұрын
I think the whole peleton failed. The other teams actually never really tried something significant coordinated against the favourized Dutch team. When the Dutch were in trouble, they did not speed up and just waited (OK, there is fair play after chute, but you do not have to wait till the counter attack starts), they did not chase the leading pack consequently either. If you do not dare anything you cannot win. It is not a multi stage thing, so there is not too much to lose. Finally, it is clear that you have to stay with van Vleuten if she is close to the front in the final phase. Certainly, it is not easy, but they are many, but let the Dutch just take over control without really make them work hardly and Van Vleuten had to spend a lot of energy in her first escape and to get back two times. Normally, she should never be able to get second place under such circumstances. Unfortunately the other brave from the escape group could not keep the pace. At least they got some significant time on screen.
