Olympus E-420 selector switch clean

Bardzo dobry filmik. Już raz dawałem mojego Olympus E-420 do serwisu z powodu wyłącznika. Koszt 200 pln (ok. 50€). Po kilku latach znowu ta sama usterka. Żaden serwis nie chciał się do tego zabrać. Więc na podstawie Twojego filmu zrobiłem to sam i działa wspaniale. Dzięki! A very good video. I already had my Olympus E-420 serviced once because of a selector switch breaker. The cost is PLN 200 (approx. €50). After a few years, the same problem again. No service wanted to do it. So based on your video I did it myself and it works great. Thanks!

I couldn't retire my OLY E-420, after all was my first DSLR. After 10 years of fateful work it gave up. I am glad I was able to fix it and it's alive again ! Thank you for the great video!

Brilliant! Very many thanks for sharing. E-410 stripped, cleaned and reassembled in around 60 minutes with your help. Previously very intermittent power switch, now all ok :-)

thanks man! i repaired my loose contact on-off button by following your method.. just 1 issue though, i got electrocuted when i touched the solders from the flash, so watch out for that.. cover it up to avoid shocks

Thanks, you saved me a lot of time. My E420 switched off when touching the mode switch. Same issue as Ian had. Cleaning and contact bending did the trick.

作業手順そのまま、見よう見まねで何とか基盤まで辿り着けました（３つのコネクタが大変でした…）。電源スイッチ、購入時の素早いレスポンスに戻って大感激。E-420、もはやかなり古いカメラになってしまいましたが、小さく軽く写りもよくて好きなんです。これからも使える限りは愛用のつもりです。どうもありがとう！…って、英語で書ければ良かったのですが、スミマセン（苦笑）。

Excellent video Thanks. My E-450 has a faulty exposure compensation button. This strip down covers that point. I have some experience in film camera repair, and plenty in electronics (I used to design products with similar connectors) so I don't forsee any problems getting in. It remains to be seen what the cause of the fault is.

Hi Ian, The problem with my camera was that it kept switching modes by itself, so for example you'd be all set up in manual mode taking shots, and it would jump to maybe automatic or landscape mode. Or you'd be reviewing images and it would jump modes, which went back to camera mode and lost the place where you were viewing. It didn't turn on/off in my case. That said, however, if you look at 08:00 in the video, you'll see that the power switch and mode switch are essentially part of the same unit - the power contacts are on the outside, mode switch contacts on the inside. So it would be possible that if the power switch contacts got dirty then it might lose connection slightly when you rotate the mode switch. I guess it could also be the detent ball or spring for the power switch not holding the switch in position - I can't remember if this is the one visible at 09:10, or the other one which is hidden underneath the rotary dial for the mode switch (black screw at the top centre at 07:48). But I think that's quite unlikely. It might be this if the power switch can easily be moved round and doesn't click into position properly. If you cleaned the contacts and took this out and forgot to reinstall it then that will almost certainly be the cause as there will be nothing to hold the power switch on. Hope that helps. Matthew

Off topic, I've also had problems with Zuiko lenses. Manual focus and auto focus sometimes become unresponsive. With the lens fitted, resenting the camera factory default fixes the problem.

You can go through all of that, or you can just take the battery out and flip it on and off about a hundred and fifty times like I did with mine and let the friction clean the the patina off the contacts.

My left/right arrow buttons and playback button have suddenly stopped working. I hoping its just a bad seating of the ribbon connector. Still, it is an eight year old camera, although its had very light use (less than 2000 shots). Some DSLR's do not seem to be built for a longer life span.

Just got round to repairing my e450. It was a badly seated ribbon connector fault 3:08. Thanks again for the upload.

I would check you have inserted all the ribbon connectors correctly (they are very small and fiddly), and that they haven't got contaminated with any dirt or oil, e.g. from your fingers, which is one reason I wore gloves for this.
