The Olympus E-500 is an 8 Megapixel CCD camera from 2005 with a four thirds sensor designed by Kodak! This sensor captures images with a filmic vibe and the camera, while limited on features by today's standards is just fun to shoot, a breath of fresh air from modern menu systems and overwhelming features.

It's an outstanding camera and produces superb, unforgettable images. I've sold all my Canon gear and just use this camera and the e-310 (same sensor and stunning colour). I've sold countless images and have never had any of my clients comment negatively about picture quality or megapixel counts. The images sell and are really admired.

Excellent video. I have an E500 purchased new in 2005. I'm and old Olympus 35mm, Pentax 67 6x7 film user and this camera is the closest to Fujichrome/Kodachrome that I have seen...and I know after using film for 30 years. You can enlarge to 16x20" no problem. great camera.

Brandon, this is a great -- fantastic even -- first video! Congrats on nailing it! As for the content, I am always thrilled to see other photographers find value in the E-500. It was my first DSLR and I took many images with it that turned out fantastically, including a summertime wedding that took place near golden hour -- I was blown away by how good the images were (using the 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 HG lens). The bokeh was stunning and color rendition was very pleasing. I think it is what sold me on the Olympus 4/3 system. Occasionally I bring it out and shoot with it, but it lacks image stabilization, which makes it more difficult to use without a tripod in challenging light. Along my journey, I also picked up the E-510 (has IS!), the E-30 and the E-5. I love the images the E-5 produces, but Olympus made the camera big and bulky, and I found I take it out less. Now I use the OM-1 which is small and light and I'm still judging how the color compares to the older cameras, but I love shooting with it. Thanks for taking the time to post this video giving a snapshot of history (that's still relevant!).

Oh man thank you so much for taking the time to watch and leave a nice comment! Definitely makes me want to keep this KZbin thing going! Olympus has made so many fantastic cameras even if there were some odd choices with ergonomics haha. I haven’t tried many of their newer cameras but they really got the color right with the older CCD ones. The images are just so easy to process. Thanks again for watching and telling me a bit about your photo journey!

I got an Olympus E420 when I was a teenager (this one has a live MOS sensor). I bought it because I wanted to post photos on my personal blog. That was before smartphones were as common (I had an old, beaten up Nokia) and prior to that I only ever had a Joycam Polaroid camera as a child, so it was my first own camera. I still have it. I love it. Then at some point I bought an old film point and shoot on a flea market to use as an accessory in a self-portrait I took for my blog at the time, and I actually use this one pretty regularly now that I got into film photography.

It's interesting you bring up the 'focus/recompose' style of shooting. It's how I learned to shoot with fully-manual film SLRs and then later digicams and it's how I still shoot today. I honestly don't even know how to select focus points on my current cameras because I only use the center point unless I'm using AF in video and I typically shoot with face tracking.

Yeah dude it's an old habit I still use on my newer cameras too. I have a back button on the A7IV for center point AF so that when the camera gets it wrong I can always focus and recompose quickly. Thanks for watching and for dropping a comment! Great to hear from you.

I have a photography business and the newest camera I own and use professionally is a Nikon d600 which was released in 2012. I also have 2-D90, a D50, D7000, D700, D200, and 2- P7000’s. All of these can produce awesome images that I can deliver to clients but when I pick up the older stuff that doesn’t have any bells and whistles and makes me actually shoot I am much more satisfied as a creator. Never once have I delivered a photo and my client said did that camera you used have 40 MP and 250 points of auto focus. Keep up the great work. Nice first video.

Yup the D40x was my very first digital camera and it’s CCD is still unmatched bellow 400 iso with any cmos sensor on the market color wise. It’s just important to shoot in good lighting conditions (sunny or cloudy but it needs light) it’s also a superb sensor for portraits. The D200 has the same sensor and is even compatible with all lenses and the D3000 as well (bigger screen)

Great first video. Pace and audio is good. Photo samples are great to watch. Even mundane subjects have been captured well and edited to look real and vibrant. I am a full time photographer and I agree, its nice to have a little something aside from the work gear just to inspire. I had that experience with Olympus EM5 and later EM1, which I chose as my main gear for a few years, as it brought me joy and good to great images when edited from raw in Capture One. Sadly I had to fight for good colour tones and my current Sony bodies make editing so much easier, but the Olympus felt so great to shoot with. I loved the tiny primes, but I even sourced a used Zuiko 14-35 f2 so I could experience some of that magic and it was great though bulky. There is value in old gear and value in some time spent using and appreciating them. I also sourced and old Fujifilm S5pro with that high dynamic range from the dual pixels. Was so slow and clunky but images and colours from those raw files, wow. Thanks for sharing. Good luck with the channel. Looking forward to the next video.

Do agree that many of these camera's should still used when there is ample time to set up your shots and actually explore what the E-volt series is all about, but sadly many of them have lingered in dusty nook's after having their battery doors lost or it's peripheral misplaced long ago. Olympus may not be a key player in most people's mind, but they often were the camera that got many people passionate about the craft, back in the day when film was king, and digital was still seen as a trend to wrangle hard earned dollars from "bubble economy" newbie's to the trade of image making.

Two things: 1) Modern today software is far better than old software. Now you can make magic tricks with old raw images, upscaling resolution, denoise with AI, are the most obvious but everything in editing an image is better now. Old RAW, old cameras benefits from this a lot 2) The best systems to get something cheap and invest in collect are Canon EF and 4/3 DSLR, in third place could be Nikon DSLR with AF-S lenses. It's because you have a clear upgrade path for your lenses with an AF adapter (Canon EF to Canon RF, 4/3 to M4/3, Nikon F to Nikon Z). Nikon is more complicated because have lenses without AF motor inside and AF-P that works only in some cameras, and Nikon have a larger flange distance, so you cannot adapt M42, Canon FD, and other mounts like you can with Canon and 4/3, even with focus confirmation in Canon with an adapter with chip.

For someone's first KZbin Video, it sure doesn't show, but I guess we photographers know our way around cameras ^^ The thing about limited highlight recovery and improved shadow recovery is a common trait of MFT sensors as well. I always attempt to underexpose the image and lift the shadows in post than the other way around. This then causes a conflict in my brain when I switch to the Sony full frame xD I don't hear this being discussed often online, so thought it's worth a mention.

Interesting, I have just picked up an E-300 and both kit lenses for £65 … I used to have one when it first came out and looking forward to seeing what the old CCD can do with the improved photo editing…. I’d bee interested in the setting s and how you are going about getting those images as they look great . Would be good to see you take us through the raw to final image . Thanks again

It’s truly amazing what you can do with the raw out of these cameras. I’ll be doing a video on editing, in the meantime you can grab the Lightroom profile I used for free on my site. Link is in the video description. That will get you most of the way there. Thanks for watching!!

I really like your sample shots. I recently picked this camera up with the 14-45 kit lens. I hope I can achieve the same results that you did! I understand that you shoot RAW. Do you ever shoot RAW+Jpeg? If yes, what settings did you use? Vivid?

Hey thanks Russ! I appreciate the kind words. I rarely shoot RAW + Jpeg as the in camera settings on these older cameras is quite limited. I think there is a slight adjustment in camera for contrast and saturation but the Raw files are very flexible in post. Good luck shooting it's a fantastic camera!

@@brandonmurray3629 I have had the E-500 since it came out and enjoyed shooting a wedding with the 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 HG lens. I still like the colors the CCD produces SOOC a bit better than my OM-1. I think what Russ is referring to is what the E-500 calls the Picture Mode, which has 4 choices: Vivid, Natural, Muted and Monotone. You can access it from the super control panel by pressing the OK button. And as to the comment about Raw+JPEG, the E-500 can do that as well. On the SCP you can select Raw, 3 quality levels of JPEG (SHQ, HQ, or SQ), or a combination of the two.

I wouldn't worry too much about raw if you're just getting started. Just focus on learning how to get proper exposure and nice composition. If you get that down editing will only enhance your photos rather than trying to fix them. I use a 4gb card (I think that is the limit) and that would be enough space for a whole day shooting jpeg only. Thank you for watching and for reaching out!

One of my favorite lenses is the Helios 44-M. I adapt it to my A7 all the time. You’ll generally get more character and less contrast with those lenses which isn’t a bad thing but yes you can get great results.

I would recommend shooting Raw and editing in Lightroom or Capture One. This will allow you to change white balance after the image was shot and adjust contrast and colors. I always shoot Raw if the camera has the option and then adjust if the camera didn't get the white balance correct. Even my brand new Sony A7IV doesn't always get it right 😄

Just got this camera off ebay with the 14-45 kit lens and I got to say the images coming out of the camera are garbage compared to the sample images I see on youtube. They come out looking washed out or hazy. Don[t know if it's the lens or I just got a bad copy of this camera. I don't see any obvious defects when I physically check the lens. I don't see the great color reproduction that others rave about. I can tweak the RAWs and they look a little better but I don't see the CCD magic. When I shoot with the 5D classic or one of my Fuji cameras, I see the uniqueness of those sensors immediately from the images I get.
@brandonmurray3629
@brandonmurray3629 7 ай бұрын
Hmm not sure what that could be, how does the sensor look? May need to be cleaned. Do you have a way to adapt any other lens to be sure it’s not the lens? The photos should definitely be crisp and detailed right out of the camera. Are you editing in Lightroom? Another thing you can try is the free profile from my website, the Fuji Astia one was used to edit my photos and I didn’t do much other than that profile and some exposure adjustments.
