For people who want to constantly upgrade their equipment the OM5 might have been a disappointment, but for people who are looking for a camera with a lot of nice features and a nice compact form factor it is a fine camera. I am still using the original em5 and em5ii because they do everything I need a camera to do. If they are lost or damaged I would consider replacing them with a newer model, but until that happens I will continue to use them. Peter I always appreciate your videos for their honesty and valuable content, thank you!

Thank you for another excellent video. I am the target audience for OM5 and am very excited about it. I am an older, female, hobby photographer for whom weight and portability are extremely important features. The OM5 has everything I have wanted in a lightweight hiking and adventure camera. I intend to get one.

I didn't mock the OM-5 for having micro-USB. I pointed out that charging the camera is not new, the 5.3 had it. Also that it isn't a special feature, it is standard these days. I really do like this OM-5. It is a nicely sized E-M1 III. But the micro-USB, old menus and no improvement in body construction, these are factors that are a bit disappointing. For those who made comments about you Peter, they are indeed unfair. We know you are an OM guy but even so, you still give your opinion. In any case I watch a range of reviews and make up my own mind. Keep making the videos, you are doing a great job.

Potentially OM Systems didn’t manage expectations well (thanks to the rumour mill), but from what I can see they have managed to stuff an em1 mk3 into an om5 body - that’s a great achievement considering you only have to sacrifice a card slot! Take the om1 out of the picture and then the om5 is a stylish, powerful camera.

I was okay with the idea of the OM-5 being a modest upgrade, but it's pretty much the same camera with a new logo. At the very least they could have added USB-C.

That is something that I agree with, mainly because I want USB-C PD capabilities (to power the camera, not just recharge it while it is off) and I'd also like higher transfer speeds than USB2.0. I think their decision to reuse the exact same body shell as Em5 precluded changing any of the connectors.

I agree. Difficult to be really sure as I don't have one, but from the reviews etc I've seen it just seems to be essentially a re-badge with a few tweaks OK I guess if the want to re-badge the whole system but don't tout it as a big jump.

Exactly. I find it hard to see why people dont understand how disappointing it was. The camera its self is ok but its nearly 2023 and we are still on a 2mp EVF and below par tracking. Also still stuck on the plastic body which they absolutely did to save money not weight.

I think you're missing the mark on 'I don't think the target OM-S user is going to be bothered by it' and alluding to the target being an outdoorsy person wanting to capture pictures when they're on their adventure. I was the customer target before OM-S took over -- I'm an avid outdoors person, I do camping and through hiking. I went Olympus for compactness, weight, general ruggedness, ideal for outdoor use. We're not going on trip Lisbon staying in a hotel; we're spending a week or more in a large wilderness park in the middle of Quebec. USB-C is not the end of the world but *it is* one less cable to carry and deal with. People who are going on outdoors adventures are very mindful about what we're carrying. USB C is the cable on the few other electronic devices I take and my EM-5 mk 3 is the second-to-last device I use regularly outdoors that uses a non C cable (my Garmin watch being the last -- which lasts over a week on a single charge so it's less of a bother to forget that cable). Even my headlamp charges via a C cable. I truly believe it is a fair concern that JIP/OM-S is going to half-ass the cameras like what happened with the Sony Viao lineup. I think the lack of USB C (and not using the same OS as OM-1) signals to the non-ambassador fans and people invested in Olympus gear -- like me -- that OM-S is just "phoning it in" and not going to take camera development seriously.

It kinda looks that way unfortunately, An upgrade doing the least amount of work possible. Their *next* camera will be most telling. If it's just a lukewarm "OM-10", then it's game over I think. I have the E-M5 Mk III and there's no compelling reason to spend good $$$ upgrading to this.
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 2 жыл бұрын
OM-10 will be even harder to sell. The only way is to find the right audience and that is the hard part. I think the most important thing is to develop the OM-1 series cameras. If it sells then I think OMDS is good, no matter how OM-5 or the possible OM-10 sells. You do not need to be popular in every category of cameras to have success. A small niche camera can also work.

Thanks for your helpful review. I decided to risk of spending the money to update from Olympus OMD5 Mk3. After a couple of hours of use as the official photographer for a concert, I found it provided a significant improvement in focusing speed and accuracy - an important feature for me. The battery life also seems to be improved. It was very lightweight with the 12-45 mm f4 lens fitted and worked well in conjunction with my OM Sytems OM1 with a 40-150mm f4 lens fitted. I couldn't distinguish any difference in picture quality between the two with a maximum ISO set at 1600 on both of these OM Sytems cameras.

The EM5iii is a mini version of the EM1ii. The OM5 is a mini version of the EM1iii. Same development path! When all the rumours started circulating about the OM5 having the same sensor and AF as the OM1, the question I kept asking myself was "How is OMDS going to differentiate between this and the OM1 and not cannibalise sales of the OM1?" Consequently, I was not surprised by the specs when it was announced. From the perspective of OMDS it makes sense. I have an EM5iii. It goes everywhere with me, including on my motorcycle adventure trips. The plastic body is still good (how many failures were there in actuality? I know of 4, and they were all associated with heavy lenses and the same tripod). I don't care about USB charging. I have a spare battery which I charge in a proper charger (supplied with the camera) whilst I'm out and about taking photos. I know many people who, like me, are not getting any younger. I see 2 target markets for the OM5 - adventurous people, and people who want a small, competent light camera with good features and many available lenses. Yes, the OM1 menu system would be nice, but its not a deal breaker.
@brucecampbell4485
@brucecampbell4485 2 жыл бұрын
Some speculation based on the logic of my previous post... As noted, the EM5iii is a mini EM1ii with the OM5 being a mini EM1iii. If OMDS follows this development path then when the OM1ii is released in 3+ years, possibly with a higher res sensor, then the OM5ii could be a mini OM1. From a corporate perspective this makes a lot of sense. It keeps the OM1 series as the flagship model but keeps development costs of the second tier camera (OM5) to a minimum, so keeping the sales price down.

I not sure I can add anything to this argument. There is no such thing as the perfect camera for all people. I think it will be a very nice camera for its target market. Personally, I want the OM1 but I have told two people I know who are in the market for “real” cameras (they use their iPhones now) to look into the OM5 because I like the camera is a good match for them and what they want out of a camera system. Keep up the great work, love your videos! 😀

I am very disappointed that some people criticised you in a very unfair way. You are always clear and honest and certainly do not deserve that. Regarding your assessment, I found it to be balanced and well taken. Given the targeted public of customers, the features of the OM 5 are well chosen as you said.Personally, as a happy owner of an EM 5 Mk II and an EM 1 Mk II, I am so satisfied with the photos that I can take with these two cameras that I do not intend to replace them in any near future. And I am aware that I do not even exploit all the features of both! My hope is is that OMDS will be successful in acquiring new customers, which will support its financial stability, for the benefit of all Olympus and OMD fans. Keep up the good work, Peter, and thank you for your outstanding videos.

I’m not disappointed with the new OM-5. If I had not already got a e-m5 mk3 I would buy this camera. It is aimed at intermediate, casual photographers. I like the new features, yes would have preferred usb-c, just because that’s the cables I have and my Mac has & also I like the OM-1 menus better, but it is a great little camera. As Peter said, it is aimed at people like me, who are into enjoying photography in its many forms, but not wanting to spend £2K on a body yet. Like I said if I was buying now I would get this, I like my e-m5 mk3. Yes my path of upgrade is to OM-1, just like if I owned the OM-5, my path of upgrade would be OM-1, not e-m5 to OM-5, unless you have a e-m5 mk1 /2 model. I love the format, design and weight. Just think who the camera is for, it’s an upgrade from epl or e-m10 users. Everybody would want an OM-1 at om-5 price, but this is not an OM-1, no matter how much you would like it to be. This camera is for just above beginner to good intermediate users. Just look at the features for an intermediate users new camera, it is blinking good, not perfect, but lovely all the same.

Great video with some very good points. I have the OM-5 on pre-order and will trade in my E-M1 MkIII for it. My E-M1 MkIII haven't been used in 7 months ever since I traded in my E-M1X for the OM-1. I love my OM-1. The issue with the E-M1 MkIII is that it doesn't do anything better than what the OM-1 can do better. The OM-5 can nearly do everything the E-M1 MkIII can do and is a smaller camera. Because of the smaller size I can see several usage for it. One is to use is a two-camera kit for wildlife with the OM-5 it with the 12-100/4.0 lens along with the OM-1 with the 150-400/4.5 lens. The other is just to have a kit with the OM-5 and the 12-45/4.0 and the 20/1.4 with me on non-photographic specific outings where compact size is important. Yes, I would have loved to see the OM-5 with USB-C PD. I believe the new menu system was made for the TruePic 10 processor and would have been difficult to have on the TruePic 9 processor. If the TruePic 10 processor was used it might have required a larger battery, which would have required making a slightly larger camera. With the price difference between the OM-1 and the OM-5 I expect to see an OM-3 in the future, which might be more in line with the wild rumors.

David, you are making a huge mistake. See my comment on this video. You are downgrading and you're paying good money for downgrading from a better camera to a worse camera. The E-M1 III has the much better body. The E-M1 III has much more powerful drive modes (about twice as many frames per second on both mechanical and electronic shutter). The E-M1 III has the better viewfinder. And more. It does not make sense to trade an E-M1 III against an OM-5. The only way this made sense if you made money off that trade. Which you won't since the OM-5 is a new camera.

@@weisserth I have not used my E-M1 MkIII in the 7 months since getting the OM-1. The OM-1 does everything better than the E-M1 MkIII. Yes, the E-M1 MkIII is a better camera in most ways than the OM-5. Still I have a use case for a smaller camera when my OM-1 is too large. I have no use case for the E-M1 MkIII, it just sits in a box waiting for the OM-1 to break.

We all have different needs. I agree that E-M1 Mark III is a better camera than OM-5. On the other hand they have almost put the E-M1 Mark III is a smaller body. @davidblack2632

@@p.io7 Both true. The E-M1 MkIII is a better camera and a better fit for the 12-100/4.0. I got the OM-1 which is even a better camera than the E-M1 MkIII for most of my photographic usage and professional photographic needs. That is why my E-M1 MkIII has not been used in the 7 months since buying the OM-1. What I am looking for is a small camera for my non-photographic needs. One case is when out on a wildlife photographic outing when mostly using my OM-1 with the 150-400/4.5 I will have a OM-5 with the 12-100/4.0 stuck in the corner of the backpack for an occasional snapshot. The most likely use will be on non-photographic outings where the kit will be the OM-5 with the 12-45/4.0 and the 20/1.4. I can still sell my never used anymore E-M1 MkIII for a fairly good price and get a camera that I can use when the OM-1 is too much camera.

First, thank you for doing what you do. I am a longtime user of Micro 4:3 cameras, and I still think it is a perfect solution for 90 percent of the people out there, based on abilities, price and weight. (I do own a FF for those times I need more, but it mostly sits in a bag in reserve.) As of the OM 5, I agree with you, there were a lot of crazy rumors out there that built up expectations. I think a lot of people were expecting a mini OM1, but the new company followed an existing pattern by putting most of the goods of the EM-1iii into the 5. This may be because the camera was already on the boards when the new company took over, or that they wanted to maintain the levels of differentiation with the flagship 1 line vs. the 5. I do with they had made the menu system universal, and kind of hope they do in a firmware update. But that would require a lot of new coding. I also with that they had put a USB-C connection. I think these are items you wished for, as well. Anyway, keep up the good work. I always look forward to your reviews.

Good clarification Peter. The OM-5 is an excellent camera in its own right, full featured for it's price. But for me, already owning an EM-5 iii and EM-1 iii, it doesn't offer any added value. However, it's a great blend of the best features of both of these cameras, so it's an worthwhile upgrade from EM-10, EM-5 ii and even EM-1 ii or PEN-F ... or perhaps to have as a second camera (as a backup).

I have an EM-5 MkIII which has been great as a light weight backup to my EM-1X . Nothing really to criticise in terms of image quality or durability. It's a nice little camera, and the OM-5 should be too. That said...I doubt many EM-5 MkIII owners will see enough incentive to upgrade to the OM-5 as it's just not different enough. Also, the menus on the OM-1 which I also bought recently are a big improvement over the older style, and it's a shame that this was not implemented here. End of the day it's a camera, and hardly worth getting upset over!

My issue was more that this doesn't feel like as much of an upgrade over the previous EM-5 as the OM-1 was over the EM-1. On its own it's a solid camera, but if you have an EM-5 III it just doesn't make enough of a difference to upgrade. Regarding USB-C, I was really hoping it had that just for equipment compatibility. My cameras act as webcams at work and on a long meeting day I can burn through the Fuji's battery and need to switch to the EM-1. Having both use the same cord just makes the process quicker and cleaner.

Even though micro-USB has been one of the complaints, it's really just one of many. I don't think very many will say, "I love everything about this camera, but the connector so I won't buy it". That's an extremely rare person and is ignoring what most people are concerned about. The main complaint is that it's a super expensive camera for marginal benefits over the last one. It's $1700 in Canada. After tax that thing is almost $2000! I have no idea who this camera is for at this price point. And we can't forget the context - a lot of people feel the same way about the OM-1. Overpriced, beaten by the competition who offer more for less. For less than the OM-1 (in Canada) you can pick up the the Sony A7iii, or the new Fujifilm camera. The OM-1 and OM-5 will give roughly the same image quality as the EM1 Mark 2 in 2016(!!!) People who are complaining here, like myself, generally want Olympus/OM to do well. But after multiple uninspiring cameras that are ballooning in price, it leaves the product line in a weird place for many.

@@ForsgardPeter well it depends on the genre of photography. I switched to full frame and for less money I’m getting way better results on the wedding side of things. One could argue that $2800 (Canadian) for essentially the same image quality as the EM1 mark 2 isn’t really a good value. For wildlife and long lenses, yes, benefits in m43 for sure Edit: for specifics, the Sony a7iii with the 50mm G prime is hundreds of dollars cheaper than the OM-1 with the 25 1.2. For less money you get better image quality, a slightly lighter carry, better eye detect, better low light performance, etc. I'm also a wedding photographer who shoots with primes. For my specific genre of photography, moving away from M43 was absolutely worth it. Or for the *same* price you could get the A7iv, because the G line lenses are cheaper than the 1.2 Olympus ones.

Hi Peter, I am a waterfall photographer in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southern Appalachia and am a new Olympus user. I have both the OM-D E1 Mk III and the OM-1 and love them both. I bought the OM-5 to carry and shoot photos from the hiking trails and have loved it so much, I bought another one as a backup. I use the 12mm f/2.0 f2.0, 17mm f/ 1.2, the 40mm f/1.4 and sometimes the 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro II and my photos have been outstanding…and certainly comparable to the image quality I could make using my former Sony A7R3 and A7R4 with GMaster lenses, ~even better because Image stabilization in the OM-5 is better. I shot with Canon, Nikon and Sony for years and switched to Olympus in 2022 to carry lighter gear for long distance hikes… No regrets👍👍… Two closing points: 1) as for me, I love both the menu system in my E1 Mark III and OM-5. I find them to be quite logical and precise to navigate, so kudos to OMDS👍👍; 2) I appreciate your reviews and commentaries, which I consider to be among the best in KZbin, because I consider you to be completely objective, fair, experienced and knowledgeable. The world is full of “harpers” and “haters,” superficial, dillitent people who attempt to prop themselves up in their Egotistical Self-Importance by criticizing anything or anyone, …unteachable people who are closed-minded and don’t listen, who are quick to judge others and things, putting them down in order to prop themselves up as authorities, and I have no time or patience for these types of superficial people. This "OM5" is just a rehash of the Olympus OMD 5 III with very limited superficial changes merely to remove the Olympus name and move on to OMS logo. I can't believe that anyone would promote it or get excited about it as if it were anything significant to get excited about. It is definitely not worth it for anyone who owns the prior version, OMD 5III, to pay $1200 to buy it, not at all. What a shame, they could have at least updated the menu system but they didn't bother at all. From all appearances, they were in a hurry to just get a camera with their new name out the door without any substantive updates/upgrades.

Micro usb may not be a big deal, but my EM1ii which is 6 years old has usb-c. So that begs the question: Why did they put micro usb in this camera? It doesn't make any sense, unless it's just a way of differentiating their higher priced OM1. This seems rather petty, and somewhat manipulating. It may not be a big deal, but I bet if they had put micro usb in the OM1, people wouldn't be saying it's not a big deal. People would be saying that it's a ridiculous thing to do.

I've been watching Forsgard's videos for two years now. First of all, I want to thank you for them. I can even say that sometimes Peter Forsgard is a too critical about Olympus or OMDS. So, as a person, he plays fair play for a long time. As for the OM-5, if someone is a photographer and wants to have the same good photos as with the OM-5 camera, then let them buy the omd em5. It is now sold 300 euros cheaper than its new competitor, which is completely identical in terms of image quality. I shoot on an old Panasonic dmc gx85 and I plan to jump in quality, so I will buy an old Olympus em5, because now is a unique opportunity to get it at a price that has never been here before and will never be again. If it were completely sold out of the market, only then would I buy the OM-5. So much for my advice and consideration.

Sigh. People are still going on and on about sensors. My opinion is ALL camera sensors are excellent now. What matters now is the processor, the software and the system overall. As for om-5 being too expensive, well the Om-5 is clearly capable of professional use in many situations.

Asvan OMD 5 II user, this just sound like an update of an already great camera. It improves on the qualities for which I bought the camera in the first place (stabilisation and weatherproofing). If I'm every upgrading it will be to this one. Maybe not the revolutionary product people were dreaming off, but a solid continuation of the product line. We shouldn't demand from companies that the new product bloed the old one out of the water.

Thanks again Peter. The OM5 is a brilliant camera, so portable and loaded with features. It's funny to think back to 'EM5 III' launch, some reviewers said it didn't have 'Live ND, no My Menu system, no Starry Sky AF' - OM5 now has all of these and more! Can now assign Custom buttons too. Great functionality. 12-45 & 40-150 f4 Lenses are sharp and agile with this camera too. Yes just depends on the user, for me Lightweight and great image quality are the main things and OM5 delivers this.

Oh and one more thing- If the OM-5 is aimed at people recording family moments when they are with friends outdoors, the cell phone today fulfills that role. So I am not sure that's the right marketing for this camera. At least in the USA, what I see is the 'carry small, hiking outdoor adventurer" and not necessarily at all "collect memories of family / friends while doing so." The later is something the cell phone is delivering and doing right now.

It works for me, I am not an adventurist who wants a camera just to capture their experiences, but I get why a marketing team in 2023 would go that way. I upgraded from the EM5 MKii , so a 2 camera step up and as a consequence this newer model has enough new features to make the re commitment to M43 worthwhile. I was complaining when Olympus moved from Mag alloy, I don't miss it at all on my OM5. People need to realize that the more you develop a product the more likely the next gen has a lot of the last gen. That is keeping all the things users like, size, weight, handling and tweaking other areas where you can offer things that improve, even better image stabilization, live ND hand held high rez, better auto focusing etc. Thanks for all the videos Peter I always enjoy them. Hi Peter. I don't believe you are a 'shill' I too have been a dedicated Micro Four Thirds user for many years and really value the compact size of the system. I own EM 5 II & III cameras and a selection of lenses.I have no intention of leaving the format and hope they go from strength to strength. However, I have to strongly disagree with your position regarding Micro USB vs USB C. USB C is now the industry standard and has much more to offer in terms of speed and compatibility with other devices / chargers. I also cannot excuse omission of new menu system and feel EVF is now very much sub par. What OMDS have released should have been a firmware upgrade for the EM5 III. Not worthy of anything more. Would have been a good release 3 years ago but now neither groundbreaking or keeping up with the competition.
@jamese4729
@jamese4729 2 жыл бұрын
Totally with you, David. USB C is a standard feature now, and offers many things that Micro did not. Being able to charge a portable travel camera through PD on the go is a big deal and can potentially save the buyer relevant money on batteries. It also makes the total package smaller for travelling, since you don’t need to bring a separate charger. The omission of the new menu system is really poor, as well. It really shouldn’t have been very hard to move the new menus over. OMDS just didn’t want to spend the time/money to do it. Not necessarily with you on the EVF, since the R7 also has the same resolution EVF. That said, the R7 and R10 both have subject detection autofocus. For a camera of this price, they could have included it, particularly since the OM-5 has the same sensor and processor (better processor) as the M1X. I think we would have been foolish to expect the OM1 sensor on this camera, but a USB C port, OM1 menus, and bird detection autofocus would have made this camera a really compelling buy. Instead, OMDS has to work to convince people that it’s a good camera for travel. It is, but it could have been way better with just a little bit more effort.

Rumors were a big factor. The pandemic was a factor by slowing the pace of business. The biggest factor is that cameras are complex and take time to master. Reviewers often publish their opinion long before they master the camera and have no idea about how to get the most from it. A fourth factor is that many people consider their opinions well-founded without being interested enough in photography to realize that the technical limits of the camera are less important than their own limited skills.

@@RoderickJMacdonald I suppose we could think of the EM-5 that way, a cost-cut, feature-cut, version of the previous generation EM-1, except each new release of the EM-5 brought substantial improvements to the previous generation. The issue is, the new OM-5 is pretty much exactly the same as the previous one. Whereas prior OM-5s seemed like ground-up re-designs, this particular one was surprisingly low effort.

I think the problem is OMDS' credibility. With the OM-5, they created a "new" camera in the cheapest way possible. That doesn't inspire confidence, and the dubious interview statements by OMDS managers don't help either. It's like Ricoh: They introduced the KF as a recycled K70. For me, this means that there is no more money for investments and/or they are not listening to the customers. There is another parallel: both camera brands are the camera divisions that was sold off by the original companies, perhaps a bad omen.

I (and many other people) are disappointed that the new features and improvement over E-M5 III are so minor. There is a review video for E-M5 III by you (called 'Olympus E-M5 MKIII - First Impression!) three years ago in this channel. In that video, your main complaints are (i) battery life (ii) ergonomics issue with the back dial. These issues remain unchanged in OM-5.

I personally hold all manufacturers to a higher standard, and don't think it's right for us to simply accept that all cameras will do some things badly. Why should they? And why let them get away with it? If they wanted to, they could design cameras that do everything well. But instead, each camera company has a thing or two it does well, then the rest is an afterthought or only half-done (so that they say it has that feature on a marketing sheet). It shouldn't be "normal" lacks features, or has them but they're not well implemented. We know it can be done well, so that's how it should be done. I don't really care whose name is on the camera either. But you raised an important point. People buy specific cameras if they prioritise certain things, such as great AF, or great IBIS, or great video CODECs, or low noise. My frustration is, why can't one single manufacturer do all of those things? That would be better for the consumer.

Spot on. It is same things I said at the outset. The fact that it is a new company with limited resources seems to have been overlooked by most people, It made perfect sense they would make a camera that they already had the facilities to produce but with the new branding that they need to get customers used to and accept. The upgrades were only incremental but most new camera models are like that. And they needed to get a cheaper camera out as soon as possible because not everyone can afford or needs an OM-1, and stocks of the old Olympus branded models must be running, especially at the sale prices on offer at the moment. To me, it’s still a fantastic camera, but not one I’ll be buying simply because I find them too small for my hands. Everyone can have an opinion, but it is just an opinion and not necessarily correct or even valid. As for the menu thing, it could be updated with a later firmware release. Look at what Olympus did with the EM-1iii.

I might buy this camera for video. E-M5 III unfortunately did not have auto ISO in manual mode for video. This one has it. It also has (very) good stabilization in video, movable touchscreen, 4k with no crop, and (very) good rolling shutter. But I was expecting some improvements compared to E-M5 III. The best video (DCI, C4K) is only at 24 fps. Why they did not include 25 and 30 fps? Standard 4K has 24, 25 and 30 fps but it's softer. Compared to Panasonic it has a phase AF but it's not as good as Canon/ Sony. So IMO they should have improved this camera more. On the other hand, for casual video work every system has flaws. Canon/Nikon in APSC forgot to offer native lenses. Sony aspc has a very old sensor with enormous rolling shutter. Fuji - they say issues with AF. Panasonic - no phase AF. So this camera might be a good option for casual filming. It also has a flat profile and OM LOG but... only 8 bits. It's not perfect, but I might buy it. Waiting for reviews. I won't wait for OM-3 or OM-10 because no one knows when / or if at all. I'm a bit disappointed because they could have improved this camera in many aspects but they did not. It's better that they learn to use the cameras feature set to create the images they want. I think a bigger investment in glass makes more sense. Who cares if the charging port is old school Micro USB rather than a type C?? Having said that.. I'm glad I have an EM-1 MKIII...It does all it does and I got a beautiful used one for less than the OM-5 new.. That is really the sticker for me.. that a new camera in the line,,using many throwback features is still priced that high. Not a great choice of used stuff where I'm currently located, but even on ebay imo if something is in really good condition, the price doesn't seem too different from the brand new; for example used em5.3 in good condition around $700 while brand new around $900 - not really saving much.

OM-5 works for me, too, I upgraded from M10 and M10.2 so A) the menu system feels familiarly comfortable (I never used an M1 or OM-1) and B) the battery is the same as the M10.x which is handy for me with a handful of batteries. So its real easy to carry the M10.2 as a backup. It has a lot of the features of the M1.3 I sort of wished for, and the USB connector isn't a deal breaker - it feels like they should have gone with the latest USB-C but it beats the old Olympus proprietary USB data cable that couldn't charge anyway.

I think you are correct, the market for the OM-5 is not the tech interested reviewers. And I think that most people following youtubers discussing camera equipment are tech interested too, and have a high-end camera model. As you say, the market is for those who finds the phone is too limited (a decreasing market) and their choice is between the E-M10 and the OM-5. You could argue that they can choose the E-M10 instead (a waterproof version would cannibalise the OM-5), so the question is if there is a need for two levels?

Hi Peter! I understand you are an OM System ambassador. If so, please forward my following comments to the manufacturer. First of all, I am a Nikon, Fujifilm and Sony user and I am using an M5 camera recommended by a good friend. - When connecting a smart phone, a button has to be pressed on the OM's front panel, unnecessarily in my opinion, - when connected to a smartphone, the camera's image files and controls are not available! This is a big problem because it is not possible to fine tune the image via the phone, -the EVF and the LCD are not in place, this is a stunning flaw, - you cannot view the played image in the EVF. In my opinion, these bugs and flaws can be fixed in software if the manufacturer has the intention to do so. Have a nice day!

The dual pair m1-m5, m1m2-m5m2 is consistent, m1m3-m5m3 (where is usb-c) is still ok, and om1-om5 (where is usb-c in a camera built in 2023!!!) is a discrepancy. The choice depends on the features and what camera feels right. Of course also price has something to do with the choice. You listed a few cameras that are totally for different purpose than OM-5. For filmmaking GH6 for sure is a better choice. Canon R6 is about 1000 more money and more expensive lenses on top of that. Not sure Canon R6 and OM-5 are alternatives for many. Fuji is a good example of an alternative to OM-5. Just to mention a few things. Many of those camera a re better than OM-5, but the price range is also different. Peter, great explanation. I was on the side of Robin Wong's comments, but I do see the value in the camera for a certain market. I was definitely a target purchaser had I not bought the EM1iii this past summer. In fact, I would've preferred this as it complements the EM5iii I already have and the batteries are compatible. I think where some of us are concerned, you've identified in this video. OMDS may have a problem here with the target market identifying itself.. But, I do agree with Robin in a couple of aspects, insofar as they are playing catchup. The EM5ii was more video-centric when it was released than the original EM1. The problem here is that OMDS is behind the competition on the video side. OM1 represented an improvement, and closed the gap, but assuming the refresh cycle is 3 years, it will continue to fall behind the competiion. OM-5, save for the vertical mode and OM-log, didn't offer improvement on the video front beyond what EM1iii has. So it lags further behind. I would have liked to see this released next year with enhanced video capability such as HD 240p, 4k 120p. I think that would have been a winner. For me, and I suspect others, the worry is that OMDS will always be playing catch up on significant areas such as video and thus grabbing new customers could be a problem. We all want to see them survive and thrive. I purchased the EM1iii, the 100-400mm lens, and 60mm macro since OMDS took over. They have still been getting my photography $$. I certainly like the looks of the 40-150 f4 pro lens and maybe the 8-25mm f4 and the 17mm f1.2. Let's hope you are right and the OM-5 will sell well.

Hi Peter, thanks for your reviews. I’ve been shooting different subjects with a lot of different gear and formats for 50+ years, the second half as a part-time pro. Today, I do fine art/landscape/nature photography and some product and outdoor documentary video using M43 and Nikon FX gear. I have had Olympus cameras since the original OM1. This year, I upgraded from the EM1M3 and EM5M3 to the OM1 and OM5 (arrived a few days ago). Since the intro of the EM5 series, these cameras have been my favorite due to their combination of competence, IBIS, weatherization, computational features, portability and the sheer pleasure of working with them. I believe that the OM5 has been suffering from unrealistic expectations fueled partly by the OM1 and mostly by hyperbolic speculations of on-line influencers. The OM1and OM5 are not directly comparable with the OM1 costing almost 2x as much (I use it when I need subject recognition AF, as a 2nd video camera at 4K/60 and the security of a double card). The EM5M3 is already a great little camera and there would be no need to upgrade unless the new/improved features of the OM5 were truly useful. I did upgrade because, as an all-weather outdoor photographer I can use as much IBIS and weatherization as possible, Live ND and HHHRS, and the improved video features. I am also eager to try exposure smoothing with my time lapse work. IMO, with its feature set the OM5 is NOT a beginner’s camera. Excluding the single card (due to its small size) and some limitations for fast action and low light subjects, it is suited for pro-level work such as my poster-size fine art prints. But, to exploit its potential, one must diligently read the manual, do some additional research on the web and experiment. Failure to do so is unwise. Case in point: I recently sold an EM1M3 and a GH5. Both buyers took a camera setting for a malfunction. I resolved one issue by email but I had to take the other camera back - and resell it for more money :-) -. In conclusion, while the OM 5 has competition for some technical features, it is still the smallest, lightest body offering its level of competence. Pair it with an 8-25mm f/4, 12-40mm f/2.8, 40-150mm f/2.8 and an MC 20 and you have a hard-to-beat, 16-600mm f/2.8-5.6 compact system. Most users (Chris Nichols included) report on the delight of working with the EM5 series cameras, OM 5 included.

I however think that OMDS should invest in USB C as apple products will be using those USB C soon. maybe having inbuilt USB C ports could make it easier to connect to phone or computer. it could be used for mic, and charger too.

Can you give the cursor directions functions, like metering methode or WB? When it isnt used for af or menu navigation?

OMDS is like any other company/corporation. They are making products to earn money, not to fulfill customer's wishes and make them happy :) OM-5 looks like a camera quickly made from spare parts left from Olympus. It will be very hard to wipe out bad first impression.

Usually making profits and making customers have a connection. I agree that it is hard to wipe out bad firsrt impression. It will be interesting to see how OMDS tries to do that and if they manage.

My bad impressions lasted one day, then i desided to think again, and found the value i was looking for. I bought the OM-5 day after. Bad expectations is usually easy to make, and hard to wash away. I bought my OM-1 with my heart, and this OM-5 with my brain.
