I just got the TG-7, admittedly influenced somewhat by your review. I am an experienced photographer, owning several Canon DLSR bodies and a bag full of lenses. I have seen sample photos of this camera before my purchase and a few 'no better than a smartphone' comments. If people use this for snapshots, as most online sample images are, that's all you are going to get out of it. To be honest, I am very impressed with this little camera. Yes 'only' 12MP and yes, no manual exposure, but damn, i took a few photos around my garden and I'd be proud to display many of them. Even with little or no post processing, and even with just the OM Workspace app, I am really happy with the results. Maybe, pixel-peepers are looking at this camera wrong, if you have half an eye for composition, lighting and texture, this little gem can give very impressive results. Thank you for your fine review... Oh, and it's a lot better than using a smartphone...

Excellent job, Thomas. A good friend had seen some images from my TG-5 recently and is planning a trip to London with his wife and asked specifically about the TG-7. I recommended this new TG-7 and will forward him the link to your review. I did not get the TG-6, as it was pretty close to my TG-5, but the way I use it for macro and remote work, I think the TG-7 is a worthy update for my use. In the field, as a nature photographer and sometimes sports photographer, I like having a TG mounted on my tele-zoom lens's tripod collar so I can film wide field video while shooting stills/video. It also is a good FOV range between a second OM-1 with 7-14/2.8 and 40-150/2.8 with teleconverter in nature hikes in the mountains where I feel I want the maximum range of FOV but don't want to carry three separate pro level bodies. I still use the TG-Tracker for some action work like white water kayaking, and it's easier to use as an action camera, but it's a bit dated now, in terms of what GoPro has to offer. One place these cameras really shine, though I have limited access from Kansas, is undersea photographer. They really do a great job with color and lighting underwater and they make a great housing for scuba diving that preserves the relative portability.

Thank you very much for your kind, but also very valuable comment. What you described is, in my opinion, an excellent use case for a camera like the TG-7. Unlike action cams, it offers a wider focal length range while at the same time delivering the convenience of an action cam. I would have loved to highlight the capabilities of the TG as an underwater camera, but I have not had the opportunity to test that yet. So I very much appreciate your input on that. Again, thanks for sharing!

Hi Thomas, thanks for another great video and review. I have the TG-5, you mentioned a few specs; manual focus, power pack charging, and 5-minute movie time, which I was unaware of. I don't think I will upgrade but you have motivated me to use my TG camera more often, especially as a true pocket-able go-everywhere camera. Often mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras and even small Pen cameras are just not convenient to carry. A jeans or vest pocket camera with all of the TG specs is much more fun than any cell phone. Cheers from Ontario, Canada. Thanks.

Thank you for this wonderful, in-depth review! I am looking to have a camera that I can carry all the time, shoot in any conditions and manually control shots at some level. The TG-7 is taking the lead over gear that costs 10x more. The small sensor it a real trade-off, but I really want something that can travel with me at any time, regardless of weather. I think it will really open up my subject options.

Many thanks for your feedback! Be warned, once I started working with a small sensor camera, it became like a challenge to me to maximise the IQ output. Since then, I've done practically everything from ultra-low light to studio shoots with this camera. It is really enticing and the IQ is not a real dealbreaker. Quite the contrary, you start to focus on technique, at least that is my impression.

Hi Thomas! Great and in-depth review. Would you say the tg-7 would be a sufficient camera for light painting, fire works and street photography of car trails? I’m thinking of getting a OM Sytems camera mainly for the Live composite feature.
@ThomasEisl.Photography
@ThomasEisl.Photography 8 ай бұрын
Many thanks! I'd say yes - in fact, this is exactly what I'm doing with this camera - pretty much every day. I even photographed star trails in the city with the TG's live comp. What I really like is that all the functions are there, but simpler/more automated than in the pro models. So if you are just starting out with OM System, this is probably the perfect one to "dip your toes into the water". And if you like the features but want more configurability / IQ at the cost of size and weight you can get a pro model and keep the Tough, because it can do things the big boys can't - like going underwater without a housing. I'm pretty sure you won't regret the purchase - everyone needs a small, capable digicam in their lives, I'd say. Feel free to ask if you want to know something specific.

Most welcome! I cannot give you a comprehensive list, as I don't have a 5 to compare my 7 to, but apart from software improvements I'd say that added support for the RM-WR1 is an important upgrade, as well as the ability to use the ultra macro AF in A mode and P mode (I think this is not possible with the 5). There might be changes in the menu and in terms of possible settings,best If you download the TG-7 manual and check with the 5 in hand. If need a backup camera for your trip, I'd certainly get the 7 for that.

Thanks Thomas, I really like this TG-7 and I am thinking of getting it. I have a full frame Sony A7 which I use with a long lens for sports etc. Last year I got a APS-C Fujifilm camera which I use for a daily carry in better weather, though I need a small shoulder bag for it. With the TG-7 I should be able to fit it in a pocket, and as I live by the sea not worry about spray. I was just wondering with the smaller sensor of the TG-7 and the protective glass on the lens , would the images be of a good resolution?.
@ThomasEisl.Photography
@ThomasEisl.Photography 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment and thanks for asking. First, I'd say that the TG is perfect for what you intend using it. There is no better option in my opinion. Second, the IQ is of course not up to your A7, but it is very good, especially if you have some photo skills. Take a look at my Instagram, there are quite some photos of models taken with the TG. Don't worry about the protective glass, it is of very high optical quality. 8x10 is no issue with the TG / and web use is also not an issue, of course. Hope this helps! Best, Thomas

@ThomasEisl.Photography
@ThomasEisl.Photography 6 ай бұрын
The biggest advantage compared to a GoPro is the camera-like control scheme as well as the excellent zoom lens. If you want something that is a good photo tool as well, I'd go with the 7. Compared to the 4, the sensor is better for low light but has a little bit less resolution (negligible in practice). And of course, the 7 outperforms the 4 in terms of computing power/operating speed and features. Hope this helps

Thanks for an interesting review. I've been considering upgrading from TG-4 for a while, but image quality was a weak point with the TG-4 and with the same lens I've been reluctant. Tested the TG-4 against an old 8MP superzoom and real resolution of the 8MP camera was at least as good/slightly better than the TG-4 and blown highlights were a problem in contrasty scenes. TG-5 got upgraded with a 12MP sensor which is supposed to be better than the 16MP in the TG-4 and lens coatings are also supposed to be improved but wasn't sure if that was enough to justify an upgrade. Of course, there are lots of other improvements I'd like too. 4K video, better time-lapse function and several of the functions inherited form the OM-system and the USB-C on the latest model. I have the filter adapter/ring for the TG-4 and that's a really useful feature IMO. It came with a lens cap making it much easier to keep the front protective glass clean. I also have the TC which do what it's supposed to, but for me it has been of very limited use. Not enough extra reach and only usable at full tele. One thing I missed on the TG-4 was auto bracketing which would helped a lot for DR-problems. Cant find it in the specs for TG-7 and you don't mention it in the video (or I missed it) except for the HDR-function which is not what I'm looking for. Could you comment? Another question is the available apertures. The TG-4 had only two + a build in ND-filter that simulated a third (very useful btw). Still the same on TG-7?
@ThomasEisl.Photography
@ThomasEisl.Photography 9 ай бұрын
Many thanks for your extensive and valuable comment! Regarding Auto-Bracketing: There is none, unfortunately. What I did was utilizing the exposure compensation and create HDR composites in post. Of course, this is only a workaround, but a passable one I'd say. Regarding apertures: The aperture mechanism is still the same on the TG-7, at least it operates exactly as you described the one in the TG-4. I don't have a TG-4 to test that, tough, but really, it sounds very similar! I'd like to comment on what you discovered when testing the old superzoom. Some superzoom lenses are very good at certain focal lengths (although physically a lot bigger than the tg-7's lens). So if the 8MP are "resolved" fine by the lens and if the AA filter is not too strong, the performance of these cameras holds up very well even today against modern cameras like the 7. So as long as you know what you are doing regarding exposure - and I'm sure you do judging from your comment - the difference in IQ between those old cameras and newer models might be insignificant. Hope this helps!
@frstesiste7670
@frstesiste7670 8 ай бұрын
Thank you for the reply. Agree that exposure compensation is an easy way to do bracketing fairly fast, but what I'd really like is just turning autobracketing on more or less permanently. That way I'd always be able to do an HDR-merge if necessary. Auto bracketing would also maximize the chance of the images being similar enough that a merge is possible. It's weird that OM Systems don't include bracketing on the TG - alle the necessary functionality is there, it just the auto part that's missing. My workaround is a Sony RX100 but a RX100 can't go where a TG can.

Hi Thomas, could you do another video on street photography with the TG-7? I'm already an E-M1 fanatic, but I also own a Ricoh GRD4 which I simply love. I have been wondering whether or not to get a GR3 or the TG-7. The GR3 of course has an APS-C sensor so print sizes can be much bigger than 10x8, but the GRD4 is also capable of superb results due to its CCD sensor. I'd be really interested how the TG-7 performs not only with resolution from its sensor and making bigger prints, but also and this is how I use my E-M1 and GRD4, setting the cameras for hyperfocal distance focussing. Is the TG-7 capable of doing the same thing? ie Is the TG-7 as fast on the street as the GR and the E-M1? I really need to see some examples! Fantastic video btw. Thanks for producing it!
@ThomasEisl.Photography
@ThomasEisl.Photography 8 ай бұрын
Hello there! Thanks for the comment and the interesting questions. Regarding print quality: While not at E-M1 quality, you can definitely expect good quality prints from the TG-7. 8x10 is not really the limit, but the size at which you will get best possible quality. I've shot quite a bit of street photography, which I will soon share on my Insta: thomaseisl.reportage -- Follow me there to take a peek. You can set a manual focusing distance and while there is no zone focus indicator, due to the wide depth of field, you can still set it up quite easily using focus peaking. I try making a video about the TG-7 for street photography! There is a lot to say about it in that regard. Compared to your setup, I'd say the biggest advantage the 7 will give you is that it is much smaller, offers a wider range of focal lengths and looks almost like a toy camera. In terms of focusing, I'd say it is definitely on par with the Ricoh, most likely better, but not as good as the E-M1, especially when it comes to moving subjects. However, for street, it is perfect and I never had any issues when it comes to the AF. Hope I was able to help! Did I answer everyting?

Many thanks for the purchase, I hope you like it, feedback is very welcome via email! And great to hear that RAW processing works now. Bad news regarding the AI NR: There is no algorithm for the TG-7. Personal recommendation though: I would embrace the slightly grainy look, as luminance noise is surpressed, it looks like film grain and you get a very unique TG-7 look, personally, I love it, but it is a matter of taste of course. Best wishes and thanks again!

Very good review. The video quality from the hotel lobby and the street revealed that this camera leaves something to be desired compared to more video focused cameras with larger sensors. I love the toughness and the macro capabilities, and the JPEG still pictures are really very good, so RAW should not be needed in most cases.

Thanks! The video is definitely more comparable to smartphone video / Action Cam video, especially under the circumstances I used as demo. If you have good lighting and in more controlled environments like macro video, the quality is very good. Also, by adjusting the contrast, you can get very punchy action footage. Best, Thomas 📸

Hello Thomas, due to a camera shortage and various tiktok trends digital cameras are all sold out in the USA. The TG-7 is available (probably as it "doesn't look cute"), would you say its a good alternative to a Canon GX7 Mark 3 ? Best, Johannes
@ThomasEisl.Photography
@ThomasEisl.Photography Ай бұрын
Hello Johannes, The TG is, to a degree, a different camera than the Canon. In my opinion, it is an excellent alternative as it allows you to do things not possible with other compact cameras. It produces a unique look, is indestructible and a macro specialist as a bonus. However, the G7X is trimmed towards high image quality and the extending lens is optically an advantage over the TG-7. Personally, I would not mind that, but I just wanted to note that. The TG is the best go everywhere companion and therefore my personal choice when it comes to compact cameras. Hope this helps!

I always enjoy your videos Thomas. I'm tempted by this camera. My only issue is I can't see any difference between the TG-7 and the TG-6, except for the usbc charging port. Other than that, the hardware specs look the same. Maybe I'm missing something like some software benefits. So I don't know which one to buy. On the plus side, I think this may take the same battery as my Ricoh GR! The GPS looks great. I wish OMD had put this in their flagship.

If this lens is unchanged from the TG-5, prospective buyers should know that, at f/2, there is significant softness in the corners at the wide angle end of the zoom range. There is one physical stop-down to f 2.8 which does improve this problem somewhat. At the other end of the zoom range, the image is unacceptably soft and low contrast whether wide open or stopped down. Stay in the full frame equivalent 35-75mm range for best results. I wouldn't be without this camera at the beach and on on hikes. Controls are far above those available in a phone camera, macro capabilities are exceptional, and the fisheye conversion lens is a blast. But, be advised: the resolution and color rendition are noticeably inferior to those of current iPhone cameras.

Ordered mine on Friday. I spent the summer in Sicily and decided then that one would be really handy as I saw some shots that I couldn't take with my EM-1 (i.e. in the sea). I was going to get the TG-6 as I saw it at a good price, but kept putting it off, then the TG-7 was announced and I finally took the dive (so to speak) and ordered my first OM System branded camera. I'm not a fan of using a phone to take photos, except as an aide memoire, and this is going to be the perfect thing to take with me everywhere without being weighed down by the EM-1 and lenses, or attracting attention. To me the red is also a bonus because it makes it look more of a "toy" camera rather than a highly capable, quality, all-round point and shoot that will also be fun to use. A case and LED adapter have already arrived so hopefully the camera will be here soon.

Hi Thomas, you may recall that I am interested to get into nature macro along with wildlife (birds) from a recent video. I have the OM-1 and the 300 pro f4, OM100-400 and the x1.4 tc. I was looking at down the track maybe getting the 90mm macro. Apart from price, one body, multiple lenses become a bit of a pain. I have been watching several videos on the TG-7 and it now happens to be on a good price special locally. It gets pretty good reviews as a macro camera and would also give the versatility of a second body and other options when out shooting. As I never plan to enter competitions or sell photos, the TG-7 certainly offers a lot more than my Nikon Z50 with a couple of kit lens. To buy a macro Nikon lens for the Z50 it is probably the same price as a TG-7. You seemed to also praise the lens for macro. As far as accessories are concerned I would probably start with the diffuser and maybe the ring light (I watched your video). Does my logic hold up? I would keep the Z50 and lenses as a travel camera at this stage I think as I have a FTZ adaptor and a Tamron 100-400 lenses for wildlife. What do you think? If you agree I can then convince my wife and tell her you told me to get it. 😉 Thanks.

Hey Tony, that is a very interesting consideration. So first and foremost - the TG is indeed a very capable macro camera, even ultra-macro camera. The only thing to consider is the working distance - of course with a 90mm Zuiko Pro you can stand further back which might be relevant for some subjects. Here is why I recommend a TG in any case - it is a very versatile camera, excellent for macro and always nice to work with, regardless of what else you have. Taking your holiday example, just think about that. When you go out in the evening, you can just drop the TG in your jacket and snap some pics at the dinner, for example. There is a lot to this camera.
@ThomasEisl.Photography
@ThomasEisl.Photography 3 ай бұрын
Regarding the Z50 - that should definitely work. But as you've already got an OM-1, why not get an inexpensive, lightweight long range zoom, even an Four Thirds zoom. The OM is really tailor made for wildlife. So the Z50 is of course a good camera as well, but I just wanted to give you this idea as well, as there are so many excellent, lightweight travel lenses for your OM as well. In any case, if your Z is already good to go, just try how much you like it. You can always make a purchase later on. With the TG in your bag as well, you sure can cover everything! Was I able to help?

And to me it looks like both the TG-6 and the TG-7 are essentially the same camera. Same body. Same lens. Same sensor. Same shutter. Mostly the same features. I can highly recommend the TG-5 - there is no other compact camera system like the TG line that you can take EVERYWHERE. If you can find a used TG-5 or TG-6 at a discount, you really don't have to buy the TG-7. Got for the TG-7 if you want a brand new camera (old) camera with warranty.

Great review. Just a small wording correction. At 6:56 you mention its sensor size to be “one and a half point three inch” - written as “1/2.3 Inch”. While the sensor size spec has always been confusing to people because it appears to mix a fraction with decimal notation, it is in fact meant as 1 / (2.3). This would be pronounced “one over two-point-three inch”.

Previous versions of this camera had access to a program called a-gps. This program could be used from a computer or a cell and would then download a small file that could be transfered to the camera. Once this was done the camera GPS would find the exact location very fast, usually with 10 to 30 seconds of the camera being turned on. This lasted two weeks, after which time the data file needed to be updated. Without an up-to-date version of a-gps the camera can find the location, but this is painful, typically a few minutes. The web site where you went to update a-gps was unfortunately shut-down by OM Systems last summer (July 2023), so this no longer work. (You can also use your cell gps, but that require to have the wifi open both on the cell and the camera, with the power drain that represents. Not practical if you're in a remote location without possibility of recharging.) Have you tried using the gps of the TG-7 alone (without a cell)? How fast is it?

I got a chart off some photography site that says 11"x 14" for 12Mpx would result as "perfect", and 20" x 30" as "good". I also read that computer screen or T.V. requires very good quality photos to get a good rendition. Print would be a lot less demanding. Of course, we are not pixel peepers in this discussion.

I'm an Olympus user with the flagship camera's and lenses to boot and am in the market for an action camera to go with me on my recumbent bicycle. The battle of the action cameras is where the TG-7 has a comparative advantage for me as its a menu system I am familiar with although it can't do the 360 or fit on my helmet and other quirky zones I may desire. So if I could only choose one I'd need to know the TG-7 is going to give me value for money where value is a property of potential use, and there lies the dilemma.

I owned tg1 3 4 and 5. The main specs of tg7 are the same since my tg5 2017. You can’t compare the video at all with go pro. Unfortunately the codec is not very good. I expected something more after so many years in order to upgrade. No improvements in image quality and video. I wished for a larger sensor maybe 1/1.7 and better video but instead we got a higher price 😅
@ThomasEisl.Photography
@ThomasEisl.Photography 9 ай бұрын
I have to admit I have not owned the models you had in the past, I can only compare spec sheets, which is not sufficient for giving advice on whether to upgrade or not. So your assessment is very interesting! The downside of a larger sensor would have been a larger camera or reduced focal length range / f-stop. No free lunch, unfortunately. Regarding the GoPro: For me, it is the lens and the controls what makes the TG-7 more versatile. Bonus: To my surprise, the 4k output was quite impressive. With the old trick of using the "flat profile" (muted -2/-2), it even takes grading pretty well. You should try that with your TG5 as well.

I fear it has the same ghosting issue that the previous folded lens models have, even without the sun in the scene there is a light hotspot only in the centre of frame. Its like a light leak, lacking contrast and shifting colours. in every situation, including underwater.

What I can tell from very extensive, daily use and testing is that I have not seen anything like that at all. Another viewer sent me a message about a purple blob in the frame, which he said was an issue for some photographers, but again, I have not seen anything like it. If the sun is in the scene, there can be lens flares, but they appear based on the sun's position, not always in the center. I assume that the issue was corrected or was the result of a faulty unit.

I took hundreds of thousands of pics (mostly macro) on a TG-6 before loosing it. It had an horrific "purple spot" problem. I now have a TG-7 which seems to have it too. I only bought the TG-7 because I have the underwater case for it already.

Maybe a little addition to my previous reply: There can be a center flare in backlit situations, but I was never able to get the lens to flare under normal circumstances. Note that light can reflect into the lens system as well coming from other angles. Using the CLA-T01 as a lens hood resolves this issue.

How can you be happy with this new camera (unchanged from the last two models -5 and -6) when the price went up while the wall connector previously included is no longer? Besides this, your review aligns with my experience with TG-5 model. You fail to inform us regarding the "purple blob" from previous models. Is it gone or you luckily did not encounter the problem? I did notice it on my older TG-5 on some occasions (looking somewhat towards the light source when certain zoom values are used). That blob is very annoying for any serious photographer, even if amateur, because it kind of ruins the beauty of a shot when it decides to show up. Very different from flares (that some people enjoy, sometimes). Regards.

Hello there! I'm reviewing the camera, not it's price. Price is very subjective and therefore deliberately excluded from the review. Just a remake: Keep in mind that just because the same parts are used they did not necessarily get cheaper for the manufacturer. Take the new Leica M6 for example and the recent inflation. I've never encountered a purple blob, although I tested it really extensively. I'm quite sure though that you are mentioning the round center reflection that you get in some extreme situations. (Look at my digicam shots, I used that as a creative element on purpose). Due to the lens's design, it looks different to what you are used to, but technically it is just a lens flare. You can avoid it by brightening the foreground with the flash, just as a tip. Maybe you can send me an example via social or email. Thanks for your comment!

@@ThomasEisl.Photographyso, just a waste of money if you already have the original tg-6? All it does better, is going deeper. Even though no normal person swims at 15m depth. I really hate the fact that they ignore users and didn't give it manual mode. But still wants to charge 200$ more than the original tg-6.

I'm not sure where you are going with this, but if you are struggling with the controls of your TG-6 (bc there is no manual mode for example), I recommend my expert guide. I have quite a few very powerful tips in there how to use it in quasi-manual mode.

@@ThomasEisl.Photographywell, I like natural colors. Being able to control shutter and aperture. Especially for astro/aurora timelapses. Instead of vivid colors, as the scenes are set to be. I also shoot in Adobe color grading, instead of s-rgb. Sadly I can't use the tough camera as second one for astrophotography.

I understand! Well, yes - the TG is not the right camera for full manual Intervention. One tip regarding the colors from my expert guide: when you record raw during live composite, you can override the vivid picture profile that is the default in post production. This also works with the previous models, according to my knowledge. Thanks for the conversation!

Yes, exactly! More than enough - I would have prefered even less, maybe 10 MP. Resolution is a marketing gimmick, at least at a certain point. As I've mentioned regarding the print size, resolution does not limit it.

I had TG series for many years.. i actually used it for professional wedding sessions. I really liked using it as B role with GH5 that time for out door in day light. It been 4 years. Olympus or Om didn’t change much from previous version like sensor size. I gave example iPhone or DJI action 4 produced better closer to 1 inch sensor. I was hoping new TG series make it something different but they just changed the name brand OM from Olympus. That’s all not much improvements. Don’t get me wrong it’s still great camera but nothing newer impressive improvements. But i really enjoyed watching this review.. very well done!!!

@IrfanKhokharFilms Thanks for sharing and elaborating your point. I very much appreciate that! Also, again, thanks for the feedback. If you ever have the chance to try the 4k of the TG-7, it is pretty good. I was surprised, I assume they improved the processing.
