Is it still not up to being the main video camera? Have the Em1 mkii with that Om1 cage (fits well enough), but kinda wondering where to turn next. It's capable for sure, but I am finding myself doing more vfx based shooting, and having that extra 12bit color info would be pretty nice. Why are there so few Oly video people? Seems more than capable to me. I have too much invested in m43 lenses to jump ship just yet.
@AlpacoFilms2 жыл бұрын
Hey Fortress, thanks for watching I really appreciate that! Regarding the OM-1 It's actually a REALLY good video camera for most things. Social Media, smaller personal films, KZbin, general creation. I'd say about 95% of video making. This is GREAT! But, I'm starting to shoot with certain companies that require either All-I or ProRes files. They don't take ProRes RAW files which makes this camera a fantastic cinema camera. But it's still only 8-bit output for regular ProRes so that doesn't work. The internal All-I files are only 8-bit so I can't turn those in. But, luckily as of right now I'm lucky enough to have enough work to pass on those jobs. Little by little companies are starting to accept HEVC. So, I'm holding onto it as long as I can for that. IF I decide on another camera it'll still be m43. I don't plan on leaving the format anytime soon. When I shot film, I shot with Super-16 and Super-8. I have always viewed m43 as the modern Super-16 format and I enjoy it too much to move away. With that said. ZCam E2, BMPCC4K, and GH6 are all m43 and all shoot ProRes internally. If I did go that route I am doing everything I can to KEEP the OM-1 because I LOVE it too much. Regarding the 12bit color DEFINITELY try shooting ProRes RAW it really opens up the camera. The problem with it is it IS line skipped so you CAN see gradations in the footage.

@@AlpacoFilms Wow, thanks for such a thorough reply! You've cleared lots of things up for me. The variety of formats and HDMI output streams can be really confusing. It doesn't help that many of these companies aren't super clear on what these capabilities are, but it's cool to see OM is moving towards video....can only imagine what is next if the OM1 sells well! Myself, I'm not filming for gig work, but for vfx shots, youtube, indie films, things like that. BMP and GH6 are in the sights, but damn does OM stuff feel solid, classy, and just...like it's made to be used. The other ones don't focus on that. So, the OM1 combined with the Ninja V, the only available option is ProRes Raw? Perhaps you could do a video on that topic, as you have a ton of knowledge on it!
@AlpacoFilms2 жыл бұрын
I really should do a video! I finally gave time to do some testing so I’ll start working on something soon as well short film using the OM-1. Regarding the output, it CAN do ProRes (non-raw) but it’s limited to 8-bit (according to the website and manual and I tried to reach out to a tech from OMDS to verify just in case but no word from them. So I’d recommend just shooting ProRes Raw anyways as it’s as small as ProRes LT to regular. It’s also widely used in Premiere Pro and FCPX so I don’t quite understand why more companies won’t adopt it.

Hi. I was thinking of mounting a battery as well as Ninja V to my OM-1 Smallrig cage and noticed SmallRig have a "SmallRig HDMI & Type-C Adapter for BMPCC 4K & 6K Camera Cage 2960" which MIGHT fit my cage. Compared with the Smallrig Micro HDMI to HDMI adapter that you're using, it would protect connections to both the monitor/recorder and the battery. Just don't know if it would fit and be useful on the OM-1 cage. Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.
@AlpacoFilms2 жыл бұрын
Hey Rick! Thanks for watching! Now if it’s what I’m thinking of, the adapter you’re talking about has no way to connect to the micro hdmi which is the only way to receive a video signal. IF they have a micro HDMI and USB-C to HDMI and USB-C then THAT would absolutely be much more useful than the one I have! I’d grab that in a heartbeat as I do like using USB-C to power the camera. But as far you would not be able to use that other adapter (the one you mentioned for the BMPCC) I think that adapter is unique to cameras that can output video signals through USB-C AND HDMI. But I’ll search if there’s something like it.

@@AlpacoFilms Yuk. I missed that the accessory I mentioned had a full HDMI out. So I've sent a suggestion to SmallRig that they make the same accessory but with a mini-HDMI output so it will be suitable for the OM-1. I've heard they are receptive to such suggestions. So, if you can't find such an accessory on SmallRig or one of its competitor sites, please do let SmallRig know you'd like one too. Should be a pretty small modification to their existing product. Thanks for your reply.

I was so close to pulling the trigger on this camera since I have EM-1 mark 3 and wanted the Olympus synergy, but went with BMPCC4K cuz I wanted try my hand at a cinema camera. Got any recommendations on a good first cine lens to pick up?

Honestly any of the SLR magics are good but my buddy Rhett uses the Mitakon Super Speeds which I’m considering now as well! Those are T/1.0 so those would be pretty fun I imagine! How’re you liking the 4k? I’m in between that and the Zcam with a bit more lean towards the Zcam since it can do ProRes Raw.

Nice rig. Is that a 17mm MFT? How do you deal with ND filters?

Thanks Shaka! Yes! This is a 17mm MicroPrime for MFT Mount. I have a link in the description to be able to get it (I get no payment or anything) for filters I use any standard 4x5.65 filters but you can buy a 4x4 tray if you prefer those. I have a few 4x5.65 filters just from buying them over the years. Thanks again!

Hey John! Yea, I hope they a full cage soon. That's the only complaint I have as well. A full cage would allow to fit the hand grip, which I used to use on my GH5s (when I had it). Full Frame is not for me either. It would have to be a REALLY good deal for me to consider getting one. But, even if I move to a cinema camera it would still be m43 camera!
