Who could thought of making a balance spring out of silicon? What mechanical watch can withstand the super-strong magnetic force of the MRI? When other companies cared about such things as perpetual calendars and alarms, Omega wondered what functions modern people needed. Omega, which has the powerful technology, is the most pioneering watchmaker.

When you own an Omega watch, you own a piece of history. I just learned that many RAF pilots were provided with Omega watches in World War II and they worked very well. An RAF pilot is shown wearing an Omega watch in the new Dunkirk movie.
@claudyfocan7315 жыл бұрын
Corvetteman2013 many RAF pilots wore swiss watches. The watches supplied by the MOD were real pieces of shit. Many of them Bought Rolexes for their accuracy, toughness and luminescence. Often upon capture, the Germans took all their personal belongings away. (They too, knew that these were expensive watches) Hans Wildorf, the guy who founded Rolex and Tudor. Personally did his best of getting the captured pilots their watches back. He agreed to send them a brand new Rolex via the Red Cross, he postponed the payment until after the war and told them not to worry about it. Some of these same Rolexes played a big role in the escape of some airmen from Stalag Luft III A old and very famous movie was made about this very escape. Its called “The Great Escape”

However as a 23 year old mechanic who’s saving for a place to call my own, 6 thousand is just out of the budget for me. Like you said it’s enough to satisfy that itch for a while. So why did not NASA test Blancpain Fifty Fathoms watch that was created in late 1950s for French "Frogmen" military divers? It had black dial with contrasting, self-luminous numbers and indexes, with rotating bezel - all capable withstanding high pressure (underwater). The watch relied on an automatic and antimagnetic movement. It was so reliable and robust that many special forces divers, including Israeli, German, American, used it.

@daffidavit6 жыл бұрын
Scott only wore the Bulova on the 3rd EVA. During the first two, he wore the Speedmaster. He was asked by Bulova to "test" the Bulova, according to legend. I've banged my Speedy against pipes, desks, walls, you name it, and the worst thing ever to have happened was a scratch. I have no idea how Scott's Hasilite crystal "popped" off his Speedmaster. I never heard the full story. If anybody knows the details, please tell them. BTW Bulova now advertises in its product brochure that David Scott sold his Apollo 15 Bulova for $1.625 mil. at a private internet auction a few years ago. Not bad. All NASA issued Speedmasters had to be returned to NASA, but since Scott's Bulova was privately owned, he was allowed to keep it. He may not have been the only astronaut to bring personal stuff into space. However, a couple astronauts were previously reprimanded in front of Congress for selling stamps after returning them from space. I don't have a personal problem with that, so long as they all had the same opportunity. I'm not so sure. I understand you can only buy a "Replica" of the David Scott Bulova watch, there were no "duplicates" made like the pre-Lunar Speedmasters. Bulova only made the "replica" recently, after they recalled after years of safekeeping it was their watch that followed EVA II. It seems Bulova made a racing version of the watch for Scott to in the CSM during the Apollo 15 mission. I don't believe Bulova would have anticipated the Omega's crystal breaking off after the second EVA. So Omega's failure allowed Scott to make a cool 1.62 million. BTW, the new Bulova is a good value. It's accurate as hell and goes underwater 50 meters. It's a little too large, but looks nice with a black leather belt. And you can't even buy a good dinner for two with wine at a top restaurant for $350 plus tax.

This video is pure commercial. Nothing really answers the question "How did the Speedmaster get qualified for NASA's manned missions?" Nothing also " describes the extreme testing". Skip the commercial part, we know you are good, just give us the details.
@ryanmiller84598 жыл бұрын
Longines, Wittnauer and Rolex were included in the test. All models were tested under zero gravity, extreme pressure variations, bone-jarring vibrations, and temperatures ranging from -18 to +93 degrees Celsius.The environment in outer space is as harsh as any a watch will encounter anywhere. Near-vacuum conditions and extreme temperatures prevail. The temperature on the side of the ship exposed to the sun climbs to about 100 C and plummets on the other side to approximately -100 C. The Speedmaster withstood the extreme temperatures without any modifications. (Omega already had developed prototypes with red anodized aluminum cases for protection from extreme temperature variations and dials coated with zinc oxide to provide the highest resistance to solar radiation.) Other test were time accuracy, water resistance, using watch with suit, and reading the face.
