A couple in a cult prepares for the end.
SOULS OF TOTALITY is used with permission from Richard Raymond. Learn more at soulsoftotality.com.
A loving couple shares a quiet, isolated life together, filled with hidden wells of warmth and affection. But they face a moment of choice as a change in circumstance -- and a solar eclipse -- will end their life together as they know it.
Director Richard Raymond, alongside co-writers Kate Trefey and Ben Bolea, has crafted a uniquely engaging love story with remarkable visual panache and skill. Shot during a total solar eclipse in August of 2017, it evokes a powerful fulcrum moment of transformation and choice between a couple.
The film's initial selling point may be the central performance by lead actress Tatiana Maslany, who won the Emmy for Best Actress in a Drama Series in 2016 for her shapeshifting roles in the fan-favorite ORPHAN BLACK. Both she and actor Tom Cullen are superb here, making each moment and beat count in terms of building character, forwarding the narrative or evoking the humor, connection and conflict between them. With such richly specific performances, the film juxtaposes its vaguely doomsday scenario with tremendous emotional resonance, creating a powerfully poetic and engaging experience.
Aiding the performances, the film also employs astonishingly precise and rich technique and craftsmanship. Beautifully sweeping wide camera shots and movements and luminous cinematography all work together to detail a world that is isolated yet warmed by the richness of the relationship within it. With its clear yet saturated tones and burnished highlights and shadows, the film's visual beauty makes it clear why it's so difficult for some to leave it, even when promised enlightenment or ultimate peace on the other side. As the film's haunting premise unfurls -- and the couple's situation is revealed more fully -- its unique syntax and atmospherics work together to add to its uncertainty, eerieness and tension.
Ultimately SOULS OF TOTALITY is a love story and a relationship drama that examines the role of a romantic connection and human love in the journey of spiritual growth. The genre often demands an arc and a story that challenges the central couple towards further closeness or intimacy, or a break away from one another. But when the moment of decision arrives -- aided by the totality of the solar eclipse -- the result is nothing less than achingly magical and soul-affirming.

Ballwiz 23 I don’t know, it was very dark at the start of the scene, same as what you experience during a total solar eclipse, then it became bright as the sun passed beyond the point where the moon’s shadow was being cast. Maybe the filmmakers would like to weigh-in and clear this up? 🙂🙂

The bodies disappearing at the end was a nice touch. A symbol of what they choose to give up for each other. To some people in the suicide cult, they have been brainwashed to think that they are attaining a higher being. While normal folks like us know that is simply untrue, the final scene juxtapose their personal choices, that they chose each other rather than the lies fed by these cults.
@LittleRainGames

SpacedogDDD - it was the dumbest thing in the film imo. It made the non-suicidal couple look like the crazy ones. To suggest that the suicidal people were the right ones and their bodies were actually whisked away to another place is ludicrous.
@TylerTraverse
@TylerTraverse 4 жыл бұрын
@@kickinitwithmydawg It has more nuance than that. The couple are a part of the cult. They are brainwashed. It might be that the bodies have departed for them, in their minds, whether or not it's true in reality. It would be what they believe, and the bodies missing symbolizes that they gave up departing in order to be together. They stayed, while their brethren left. Regardless of whether or not it is real in reality, the film is showing you what their reality is.

@@TylerTraverse So now the writers wants us to accept that this couple is still crazy even after their "breakthrough". You want me to accept that these people still might drink the kool-aid after all....because after all...it's not suicide in their minds. A minute after the shot ended they could have drank the kool-aid and "joined" their fellow crazies in death. Not my kind of story.

Tatiana is amazing. Her clones in Orphan Black were an acting masterclass. This is a small glimpse at how good her acting is. She's also absolutely gorgeous and has the cutest smile. The lead actor in this is Tom Cullen, her husband IRL, one lucky guy! As far as this short film goes, I like to think they didn't choose not to go, they just chose to hold off to be with each other for longer. I choose to believe that they lived out their lives together for as long as they could before catching the last eclipse to the other side together. Awesome short film Tatiana and Tom! Wouldn't expect anything less from those two, though!

Yeah, I think if we were a test audience, our feedback would be that she needs to drive back. She could still be close to time if she used the vehicle, but it's distractingly annoying to see her be too late *because* she didn't use the vehicle. Perhaps they're trying to emphasise that she's abandoned the message that's on the tape in the car - but if that's the case, I think the cost of her getting out and running outweighs the (possible) symbolic benefit.

Anyone remember Jonestown? ‘Heaven’s Gate’ cult, and Hale-Bopp comet? Heaven's Gate was an American UFO religious millenarian cult based near San Diego, California. It was founded in 1974 and led by Marshall Applewhite (1931-1997) and Bonnie Nettles (1927-1985).[1] On March 26, 1997, members of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department discovered the bodies of 39 members of the group in a house in the San Diego suburb of Rancho Santa Fe. They had participated in a mass suicide, a coordinated series of ritual suicides, in order to reach what they believed was an extraterrestrial spacecraft following Comet Hale-Bopp. Just before the mass suicide, the group's website was updated with the message: "Hale-Bopp brings closure to Heaven's Gate ... Our 22 years of classroom here on planet Earth is finally coming to conclusion-'graduation' from the Human Evolutionary Level. We are happily prepared to leave 'this world' and go with Ti's crew."

Confused. I thought I understood it, that they were just a cult carrying out a mass suicide. But then the sheets blew away, and the bodies were gone; She had just uncovered a few a little earlier looking for him...?! What?!

There are bodies underneath the sheets, they are just hard to see with the light of the eclipse. You can see the hands of the corpse on the last one she goes to before the guy she loves grabs her wrist.

debbie otava -Yes, during the darkness of the actual eclipse, there are bodies. But watch it again from the 16:56 mark. The sheets are clearly flat. Bodies are gone. And at the very end, when some blow away, there are no bodies underneath.

@@markread7333 Thats the beauty of short films. Not everything is always explained and there is room for interpretation. Its like jumping into a movie without seeing the beginning, & then getting a snippet, & also not seeing the rest of it. (My opinion). This was an absolutely beautiful story.

I was so focused on them that I didn't even notice the sheets. I interpret it as their love for each other, in the moment, is worth more to them than anything else. Even moving on to a "higher plane" isn't worth it if they can't be together. Everything else can fall away, so long as they have each other.

At first i was thinking why didn't she stay in the car and drive back. But then the more i thought about it, the more it made sense. In extreme panic mode i think your brain would tell you to start moving in that direction as quickly as possible. Having to turn the car around (hopefully without getting stuck in a ditch etc) would just seem like to much of a delay (even if it was quicker in the end). Getting out and running would be the most direct course of action

Semi-spoilers below the "read more"... Couldn't help but think of Heaven's Gate when watching this. But gosh that ending was so good :') I was worried it would be a tragic ending where the man had simply followed along. The breath of relief when the audio came back in with him asking her to finish her sentence. In the moments before, though, I was worried that 1. the hand belonged to the older man and 2. when it showed his face, he was yelling at her about having messed something up or that he was actively dying

So the world was going to end after the eclipse . The boy would ascend to an afterlife due to the cult and the girl would be somehow saved on earth . If they don't choose this they will die after the eclipse . Well the boy and girl both chose dying together instead. Now was the cult genuine , the sheets at last were empty which means the souls did ascend to an afterlife . So this is the story choosing love over death . Heart warming :)
