In B4 people start shouting "DIY IS BETTER". For some folks it is but there's value in plug and play or to have a single warranty covering all components. Plus this PC is built in a way that can get newcomers comfortable with upgrading so they eventually build their own system :) Is there room for improvement, absolutely and that's why we wanted to tear this thing down, hear your opinions and see if prebuilt gaming systems can evolve even more in the next generation. Luckily Omen seems to be listening.

It's not a bad pre-built. My only concern is that motherboard and CPU cooler (IHS coverage). Outside of that its better than most. Also blower style cards are not my favorite but as long as it works better than founders edition blower coolers it should be fine.

I put the parts in pc part picker and let’s just say that it definitely is not worth 2100$ since if you were to build it yourself you would spend about 1700$ with the building fee counted for. And I understand that some people don’t want to build they’re own but 400$ for it to be built is a very steep price

@@uijuma Well that's the thing, no one ever said it was a good value....just that it was for a different market segment. This is specifically why we didn't do the usual "hey let's compare this to a prebuilt!" because like Eber said at the end.....it won't compete from a pricing perspective. :)

Pretty generous saying that this rig was designed with upgrades in mind when it has one PCIe Gen3 x16 slot, two DIMM slots and while it has two M.2 slots, one is populated by the 256GB NVMe SSD and the other using an m.2 Wireless card. Other than swapping out DIMMs, CPU or GPU (which you can do in any system) or SATA HDD, I think it's pretty important to call out the fact that while it supports upgrades, it does not support expansion outside of adding a 2nd SATA HDD. You couldn't even install a PCIe x4 capture card in that thing. I guess that someone looking for a somewhat decent looking gaming rig that they can buy at Best Buy would be perfectly fine with this. I myself cannot support such lack of expansion capability. .

@@igors_lv Exactly. Even if you didn't build it yourself, for $2100, you could get WAY more for your money at even IBuyPower or Origin, like a real motherboard with expansion, a decent case with real cooling. This POS has a case that probably costs $70, a $300 CPU, $60 Motherboard, $70 worth of RAM, a $35 NVMe SSD, $40 1TB SATA HDD and a $700 2080 Super blower card. Add in some cables and you're talking under $1300 in below average parts. Imagine if they spent another $40 on the case and fans, Another $100 to change to a 3900X, another $70 to get a B550 mid-range motherboard, another $60 for a decent WD blue 1TB NVMe SSD, $20 more for a 3TB SATA HDD, and another $30 for a decent double or triple fan EVGA 2080 Super. Another $320, or spending about $1600 total, maybe add another $100 for better than stock CPU cooling and cables and they could have justified selling it as a pre-built for $2100. And I'm using retail prices that you and I pay, they probably pay 15% less than we do, or even lower for volume purchased buying direct.

@prepareforflight My game install NVMe is 2TB (Gen3) and I'm already at nearly 65% utilized. HDD is no longer an acceptable storage medium for game installs, that's for backups, ISO's, movies and recorded game videos. I also have a 1TB boot / editing Gen4 NVMe that averages 50% full. I probably have 30 or so games installed, some with a handful of fairly large mods. I'm sure I could uninstall a few but I'd be pretty annoyed having to wait for them to download when I want to play. I have the same problem with my PS4 pro, I blew through the 1TB drive with maybe 7 or 8 games (FU COD), and even a 2TB SSD isn't large enough when most of your library is downloaded, waiting for games to download on PS4 is 100x more painful than Steam or even Origin/Epic.

Prebuilt Gaming PCs offer tons of advantages -- competitive pricing relative to DIY, plenty of component options to choose from, and just peace of mind that your PC is covered by warranty...HOWEVER, THIS IS NOT IT... You can just tell that HP told Hardware Canucks to "take the money and say something good about it" -- but there's very little "good" to say, start with the barebone motherboard, it's basically a slightly altered version of the micro-atx board HP uses in its office PCs...very little upgradability and expandability. Then you've the 65w low-power version of the 3900 (i call it "factory-crippled"), and even then, the tiny little cooler can't keep the temps below 84c! combined with only one intake+one exhaust fans in the whole chasis, the system just doesn't have sufficient airflow to stay cool. And lastly you've the blower-style GPU that sounds like a jet-turbine when operating at max capacity with very little OC headroom.

For the top fan bracket: that plate has 4 tool-less breakaway tabs to open the airflow. I installed a 120mm AIO fan/radiator there (for my GPU). Another note, measure everything about the CPU retention bracket before upgrading the CPU cooler. I had issues with my Noctua NH-U9S air cooler (w/ 2 92mm fans) where I had to use all the parts labeled for Intel on my "AMD" bracket. I also had to go buy the 4 screws to bolt in the brackets because the ones that came with the air cooler were the wrong size. I was also able to add a 120mm fan on the bottom with very minor modifications. There is no fan bracket, I used small wood screws to go through the bottom of the case (it's actually pretty legit). My flow goes right-bottom to left-top. The airflow still isn't spectacular but it's fine.

I also know many people that have used the bracket to mount 120mm fans. It’s possible that HP decided to limit this option on the 30L, but that seems highly unlikely, since they’re marketing this PC as upgrade-friendly. Great video and tear-down by the way. I bought one of these just before Xmas. I wanted to build my own but couldn’t get a 30-series card anywhere, and still can’t. This seemed like a good way to get hold of one. My spec is Ryzen 7 3700X RTX 3070 16Gb 3200Mhz 256Gb M.1 1Tb HDD The spec isn’t mind blowing at £1600 I could have built it for less I’m sure but it’s plug and play and fairly upgradable. After 2 weeks with it I’ve a few thoughts, some of which have been touched on in the comments here already. The CPU cooling is woeful. The images and video in the HP website are misleading (they are generic and show a higher end unit fitted with an AIO). My fault for not reading the description thoroughly - one of the “special features” is the fitment of an Air Cooler Solution for CPU. In my usage so far (Warzone on ultra and DaVinci Resolve video editing) I had been seeing CPU temps exceeding 90 degrees and on a stress test I had to abort when it hit 97. Yesterday I fitted a ‘budget’ AIO which lack PWM pump control yet it still much quieter than the stock fan. I’ve dropped temps by 30 degrees in generally usage and stress testing saw it peak at only just over 80. Clearly a cost saving to not include the AIO on this model but it’s disappointing. Worth mentioning that in this video he claims it’s not a good idea to fit the top fan because the exhausts are just blanked off. Sadly he must not have looked closely because those blank panels just pop out and allow good airflow. Secondly, and probably understandable given the standard thermal limitations, but there is no overclocking feature integral to the machine. Another thing misleading in the item description on their website, where it clearly states there is a simple tool for overclocking. It exists on other (Intel based) Omen machines but not on this AMD version. Now I’ve got temperatures under control I’ll look at doing it with AMD own software. The “bios” on the HP motherboard is very limited and offers little to no customisability. Finally, it’s odd they chose to ignore NVidia’s own recommendation on the power supply. 500W Bronze is a real poor choice from HP and again apparent it’s built by accountants. With the cooler upgrade it’s actually pretty capable. I’d like to have had a larger NVMe and an SSD instead of HDD but otherwise not a lot else I’d rush to change.

I can imagine the people at HP, sitting around a table and discussing what can be taken off of a motherboard before it becomes useless. There's almost literally NOTHING on that motherboard, every connector is populated, you can't add more RAM without running it a 2400MHz and removing the old RAM, you can't add a fan. The only upgrades you can do are GPU and add ONE HDD. If that's upgradability I might aswell say that Apple makes upgradable computers.

Here is what I would improve: - Add VRM heatsink. Even a small one will be of tremendous help. - Make it based on the B550. If future upgradeability is important, then PCIE4 is important. Its in the next consoles. It will matter sooner than later. - Add one more NVME slot somewhere. COuld be slower, doesnt matter. - Use a slightly better cooler. Wraith Spire with copper plug for example or Prism. - Improve airflow from the top

This is the correct step forward for OEM's to make gaming pcs at low prices. Is the pc you got to review a pre-production? The motherboard has some layouts for capacitors near the vrm which might mean there is a version with more overclocking features. The two holes suggest a push pin heatsink can be added for the vrm. Can I add a prism heatsink instead? Also a dust filter for this system would only impede the already poorly design front intake. Since the cpu can do direct comm to the components than a traditional chipset you end up with the less than usual io ports on the back. Pretty unique and interesting way to cut cost.

Omen almost nailed it with this pre-built. If I were a first-time buyer and wasn't ready to build my own pc, this computer checks almost all the boxes. Good looks, good performance, modularity for upgrades... I'm disappointed in the case not having better airflow options though. The cost-cutting can be seen in this area, as well as the motherboard. Gotta keep the margins up though. Can I build a comparable/better pc for the same money? Of course I can, I already have. But a few tweaks to this pc *cough* more fan mounts *cough* and it would be perfect as a high-end pre-built.

About the pre-built thing, I was torn between DIY PC and All-in-one PC from HP. After some thoughts, I went to DIY PC even the price is a little bit higher than the AIO PC. The reason is I have more control on the DIY PC. I still like some pre-built advantages though (just plug and use, Windows 10 license, form factor, etc.)

I bought it on sale for $960. Ryzen 7 3600x, Nvidia Geforce 2060 (not the one in this video, but a smaller card with a big fan), 16 gigs of Ram, Wifi 6.o, 250 gig SSD. I mean, you can't build one that runs this good for that kind of money, especially with all the gpu shortages. I immediately installed a top fan (this guy didn't know at the time the top plate comes out and the pieces pop out) and plugged it into the four pin pump slot. You can easily add an air cooler, then you can overclock whatever you want. You can use Ryzen Master to add any RAM brand you want and set it at the speed you want. I uninstalled all the bloatware, shut down all the apps I don't use on startup, and this thing is lightning fast. Don't listen to the haters, this is a great pc for the money.

The older Omen I worked with had a proprietary connector on the MB for the lighting. So, if you were to replace the MB, you're probably be out of luck with the control module that comes with the system. Unless they changed the MB interface to say, USB or a standard ARGB header. The MB was also proprietary, and some of the case cables, like the front IO were obviously designed to only reach the connectors as they were on the proprietary MB. Replacing the MB, if you chose to, was an issue. I tried.

Why is a Ryzen 9 with RTX 2080 super referred to as "middle of the road" would that not be a fairly decent gaming PC? And why a 2080 Super when the build selection screen before shows them offering a 2060 Super or a 2080 Ti? And at 04:34 there's a fan spinning intermittently in the lower rear of the case close to what looks like the PSU, minor thing just noticed it or maybe I was seeing things 😁

This was in reference to the entire Omen lineup. Middle of the road because there are MUCH higher end configs with the RTX 2080 Ti, 2TB NVMe, 32GB of memory and 2x 2TB HDDs. In Omen's Ryzen lineup this is a middle-priced spec actually. So we should all be happy they're KILLING it with super high end Ryzen systems.

I've looked into this pre-built myself (it's offered at Best Buy) but my main concern is that it comes with a B450 board, and HP has said nothing about if they will provide a bios update for Ryzen 4000 support in the future. I think it would have been helpful to talk about the performance of the 5700XT compared to the 2080 Super. I think the 5700XT provides great entry level performance for people. For example, the Ryzen 7, 16GB of RAM, 1TB NVME with the 5700XT is 1389.99 which is a great entry level price people can expand on. I know a lot of people who want an entry level gaming rig and do not want to build or have someone build something. The Omen gives people support to friends and family so you don't have to ;). Lots of good reasons for people to look at this PC. Thanks for reviewing.

They could have saved $200 in cost going with a 3700x and better cooling & case ventilation and given users better gaming performance, which is clearly what Omen/HPwas targeting here. That 3900 is a great CPU, but it's geared more towards content creators / developers and other professionals that use their rig to make money, but the GPU and other components fly in the face of productivity use. This rig just doesn't make any sense.

The thing is, even HP's specs are all wrong on the Omen 30L. First, their specs say there is an available M.2 slot for a second SSD drive. This is incorrect, I've tried looking for it. The only available slot is the one that's currently occupied with the 1TB SSD . Second, every image I've seen of their motherboards say that there are only 2 RAM slots. Mine has four of them.

Unless you're okay with ram at 2133mhz... 😂 It's a great PC for somebody that's wants to get into PC gaming, but isn't worried about changing much or doing a ton of hardware and\or software changes. I was told it was easy to upgrade by a Micro Center employee. Found out quick, I was mislead. I took the CPU and GPU and used it to build a whole new PC. Was my first ever, solo build. Which is why I just wanted a prebuilt. It's been since 2005 since I did more than just use a PC for internet or games.
