Donnie Branhams FC taught me the trick to portals under an Axial. Droop the suspension and custom panhard/steering links to keep the geometry correct. He used modified Gmade R1s since that's what was available. Since I got it at KnK last year, it has had TRX axles and now VP portals. Works great even with the weight of the body if driven in a scale manner. It certainly is no comp truck, except C0. The VPs are nice and heavy, and have optional overdrive. So you will get added performance in your pursuit of scale realism just as I did.

Portals and whether they are necessary..... we've gone forever without them and done great. Fantastic performance from non portal axles. Sure, from a scale accuracy perspective they are cool. And do offer better ground clearance. But like you said, pick a good line and drive it. I just don't think they are the "end all be all" either. That being said, if I was building a UM or other truck that had them in 1:1, I would include them for the accuracy.

I want to build a kit with my son soon. We built a Tamiya buggy a while back but I saw this as well as other crawlers. The kit without anything is $299. I’d need a $20 brushed esc, $10 crawler motor and another servo and receiver so all in using the radio I have it would only be $50-60 more than the Redcat Gen8 ready to go (with a crappy radio)
@CasperRc815 жыл бұрын
They are both good as far as the axles, portals or not. One thing I notice with my trx4 portals is my clearance is awesome with almost no torque twist and I can lower ride with body height shock lengthens etc. for my 1.9 wraith I installed BIC pen springs inside the shock shafts under the pistons. Used LOSI 100wt oil. I experience little torque twist as they are terrible out of the box. I’m super happy with that set up as well. Need to be on both sides of the fence to appreciate both designs. Thx again for your video and thx for selling me into the kit mog for axial!😂

In almost every case I would take the position that portals are not necessary. The only exception is a Unimog! Lol. Portals have the advantage that you do not brake in the mud with the diff housing. In the wet field you do not need tires as big as a tractor. big tractor tires are hopping at a higher speed. on the steep slope you are absolutely right, because the center of gravity is higher.
@scalebuildersguild5 жыл бұрын
Yep, definitely right on all points.
@addiemonsterrc39905 жыл бұрын
I love portals, they're a neat addition to tiny trucks but like you, I agree they aren't "better". They raise your center of gravity, alter your gearing and add more failure points - so they aren't an "upgrade" so much as a different school of thought when it comes to approaching your favorite trail spots. I recently sold my Axial Cherokee to fund a Gen8 and I couldn't be happier, but that has more to do with the looks of the Redcat than the performance (which is also awesome!). Should you get portals or a portal'd truck? Sure! Will they make you a better driver? Maybe?!?!?!?! Probably not. Only you or Pat Morita can bring the best you to the surface, and with Miyagi-san no longer with us, looks like it's up to you, bud.

I think they have their place, like on vehicles that actually have them in real life if you're going down the scale route, but if you don't care and not into the scale look, then it's personal choice, if you have the spare cash and they work then go for it, if you can make your truck do things that you want without them, then that's cool too. It depends on the Unimog variant. This era, they weren't that big.

I find portals way overhyped. Yes, they give you ground clearance but they also higher your COG which is quite problematic ;) I believe the rig should be designed and built specifically for portals. I'm not fan of putting them everywhere apart from really scale builds like g-klasse, humvee, unimogs etc or heavily modified cars (I've seen some Patrol's with portals ;) ). With love from Poland

Awesomeness. axial portals yes please. But not really necessary. How's the plastic on rod ends? Do you think is is improving?

I do think it's improving. Time will tell!

Nice build but not a umog fan. But great to have options for everyone to enjoy the scale Motorsport hobby

first of all, i am big Traxxas Fanboy. But with your review i am glad to buy me a Axial again, THIS Axial. Thought it would be only a new body on the old rig, but it seems that Axial has made her homework too. Big minus: Missing portalaxles, because they are typical for Unimog. But, why buy so expensive axles like Vanquish? Get some TRX-4 axles and be happy with portals and the possibility to lock or de-lock your diffs, that would be my choise :-) Again, your review started something in my mind :-) Thanks for this, and i am waiting for your next reviews, greets from germany :-)

I only wish they would have addressed the trans input shaft end play issue. Other than that I was overall happy with the kit.

I would like to see portals on that set up. They are a little bit pricey. I noticed a lot of flex in the suspension are the spring a softer set than the normal scx10 2 rigs? By the way another great review thanks for all the info.
@scalebuildersguild5 жыл бұрын
Can't say, I don't think they're softer, but I'll double check. Portals have been ordered!

Can you update us, are the shocks still working good? I have a kit coming and was going to order some Kings or Powerstrokes, or maybe even the new SSDs, but might not need to right away if the stock ones work good. Also glad I watched this, I was about to order wheels too until you said they're beadlocks, I didn't realise that either, so thanks, you might have saved me a bunch of money for accessories :D
@scalebuildersguild5 жыл бұрын
Shocks are still leak-free, which isn't to say it'll never happen. We all know the stock kit shocks are slightly better than their plastic brethren, but leaks will inevitably occur I think.
@northernrider7805 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply! :) I have ordered some SSD 90mm's now anyway, just in case lol.

as a scale builder i strongly believe that if the 1:1 has portals then the 1:10 should as well, if not then no.

The build is great!!! What about spraying a matt finish over those body parts that are not the main cab? They look a bit too shiny for my taste.
@scalebuildersguild5 жыл бұрын
I'd considered matte on the whole thing. Still might!

I very curious how you set your shocks up to be so smooth and soft? Did you order a different spring that Axial offers? What weight shock oil did you use, and how much? As always, great video and thanks for your review :)
@scalebuildersguild5 жыл бұрын
Stock shocks built per the instructions. Just lucky I guess.
