I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Now my smartphone is exclusively a music device, my flip phone stays at home unless I really need it, and my mom hates that she has an even harder time getting a hold of me now.

I got much flag for not responding right away. Many of my family members and coworkers expecting replies in less than 10 minutes, especially if they can see my online status. But after some time they grew accustom to it on how I handle requests. The sad thing is that some of them even dislike this themselves but don't do anything against it, since they're fear to miss something important. I also appreciate the boredom from time to time. As I went to school, in the train all the kids were talking and discussing and interacting with each other. It was often loud, sometimes annoyingly loud. I recently took the train at school time, you heard nothing. They're all quiet, had headphones on and starred at their smartphone screens. What a change.

I'm glad to not be the only one with this stance on smartphones. I always hated modern phone OS's for the very reason that you have almost zero control over it or what it does. My opinion is still that an OS should maily do what the USER asks it to do, and it shouldn't just decide what to do. Now i know that this point of view is very arguable for a couple of reasons, eg. i don't deny that an OS knows best about process scheduling, or when to start caching for example etc, i'm really more talking about the fact that modern smartphone OS's basically treat you as a you're a little kid and you're given some big buttons which presents your apps and you have super simple to use user interface features and that's about it. You have no idea let alone control what is being send over the network, almost 0 control over which services you want to run etc etc. Even developing for these OS's is hell, you have to follow strict rules and guidelines otherwise your app just won't work. Imagine a desktop OS being like that...

Rooting Nexus devices is very easy and technically doesn't void your warranty because you just unroot it before sending it to RMA. Now in terms of using only libre/free software, it is especially harder because things such as GPS are one of the biggest reasons I have a phone and that kind of ties me to Google because OpenStreetMaps and other open source maps and GPS tools are far worse than what Google already offer so it's really hard for me to give up on it. Otherwise I've always been in favor of rooting your phone and getting rid of Google and similar stuff, it just becomes a lot harder to do it after you become dependant on Gmail, Google, Maps and similar things. I just wish there were a viable competitor to Android and iOS that offered the same amount of usability but with decent privacy.

I just take out things I don't use anyway - like physically remove them from the hardware, flash my own custom Rom and then check the network for a while and try to see if Google can still try and pull any kind of shit on me by monitoring all traffic, done... It's quite easy actually and while building your own Rom (you could always use one somebody else made as long as the creator is somewhat trustworthy - if you need/want support try Lineage or Copperhead) it's a way better experience than on the bloated piece of stockandroid crap previously on there. It can be fully modular and customizable if you want it to be and it has a pretty good community behind it providing a lot of documentation and support! It's a lot more like the Linux world... The way things should be. I personally use mainly parts of lineage and some copperhead to provide the basis for me to build my own Rom on - it's a lot like a minimum installation of arch or gentoo and it's easy to back up and revert as well if anything might go wrong. I'd still like the option to use hardware killswitches rather than software or destroy sensors, antennas, Bluetooth and baseband completely, just for good measure if someone might want to use those potential weak points to hijack an unattended running session - since the entire medium is otherwise encrypted. The one thing I personally find unjust with my method is that I technically support the bloated preloaded and partially malicious hardware - so the manufacturer and to a lesser degree Google itself. But they've lately been opting to sell nonhigh-end products underpriced - especially Chinese manufacturers like xiaomi - so they actually make a loss they later want to recover and turn into a profit by people possibly using their pre-installed services - that probably steal your data and might even want to make you pay for just that... - GL trying that on me idiots

A while ago I decided to go as much free software on my phone as possible, flashed a custom rom, ditched google play and used only free software from fdroid and a few other sources, and I must say it’s one of the best mobile experiences I’ve ever had, the battery life was amazing, the quality of software was also amazing and there were somewhat less games and social media apps pulling me in, fantastic stuff, sadly couldn’t keep doing it though as my requirements for mobile software grew and I got a really nice (eww...) iPhone for free

That indeed sounded great - not many people are able to pull it off successfully and many often give up. For myself, I run a completely Google-free OS, not even microG (still have user apps like YT and Maps though). What are these new requirements for mobile software? I understand that there are some situations that are unavoidable - for example, our government will eventually require us to use a contact tracing app to enter public places, and this app checks for device modifications (an enforced app which does mod checks and is loaded with trackers... SMH. But not to worry, I have solutions for that ;) )

@1:42 I can have barebone system without Google apps by using a custom rom. I guess you could sideload a browser that is unrelated to Google and download Fdroid as a open source webstore but your Android device would lose a lot of functionality - e. g. an integrated safety measure which scans suspicious apps - and some really good apps aren't available on Fdroid and require Google apps. You can limit your exposure by installing the bare minimum of Google apps. No one needs root access if a custom rom is installed.
@myron76423 жыл бұрын
I use LOS 18 without GAPPS and with no issue. > Scan suspicious apps: Similar to 'safe browsing', this requires data on your device to be sent to Google, which personally I'm against. Apps on Android are well restricted, with good sandboxing, controlled permissions and all. Unlike a computer, the damage a malicious app can do is very limited or close to none if the user knows what he is doing. In my opinion, 'anti-virus' solutions like app scanning is not necessary on Android. > Some really good apps aren't available on Fdroid: You can use an app called 'Aurora Store' which allows you to download apps directly from Google Play's CDN with a provided 'anonymous' Google account. > And require Google apps: You can use microG, an open-source GAPPS re-implementation. I have used microG for about a year before going completely Google-free. From my use, I found that microG manages to enable all apps that I have come across that require play services to function normally. One downside is that microG does not currently support (and likely won't fix support for) safetynet. This to me is not an issue however, as apps that check for safetynet are rare, with the only occurrences for me being the macdonalds app and banking apps. MicroG also provides (non-google) network location and (more privately) re-implements Google's push notification service, so apps like whatsapp can receive message notifications normally. Now that I no longer use microG (completely de-googled OS, but still with user apps like KZbin), I no longer have network location, which is okay. However, push notifications are still necessary, and I have found a way to restore similar functionality. For example, for whatsapp, it runs a service called MessageService that listens for new messages. Android kills the service every 10 to 70 seconds, so I use an app called Automate to run a script that runs a terminal command that re-launches the service every 12 seconds. I find that impact of this on battery life is not noticeable. Overall, I'm pretty happy with my google-free system setup.

The most useful thing I do with my cellphone is keeping track on my expenses. Each time I buy something I log it into an app, so I can always see how much money exactly I have, and it really keeps me from unnecessary spending.

Google's Apple's and/or the app maker's perspective: "The most useful thing Alternative EFG does with their cellphone is keeping track on their expenses. Each time they buy something they log it into an app, so we can always see how much money exactly they have, and it really keeps me from unnecessary surveillance." Maybe I am too paranoid.

That's why I use Lineage OS without gapps and install app from F-droid. I hope for Postmarket OS to be completed for at least some devices, if not for work, I would have no need for a smarrtphone. A pocket PC, on other hand, is useful.

@@altEFG We're doing the same thing! Even waiting for PostmarketOS!

Lol, I give the same use with an F-droid app (My Expenses if I'm not wrong). The second use is 2FA in some accounts.

The only reason I use cell phone is to get connected to the internet. It's the only way to get connected here or use a 3g or 4g modem.

Lg G5 over here... I can't even root if I want to because the bootloader is encrypted. Meanwhile, in the EU, it is rootable because the bootloader has to be unlockable by law
@WolfgangsChannel6 жыл бұрын
Not sure about that. Blackberry devices that run Android have a bootloader that is impossible to lock, same with Apple devices.

But I need a portable music player, and an easy fast duckduckgo checker The rest of the shit, like social media or whatever, I dont use or have any use for. If im literally just listening to music and occasional searching something for quick fact checking or something, I dont think its a big deal.

Luke is confusing smartphones with a traditional cellular phones. I switched from a succession of BlackBerry phones, that last being a BlackBerry KeyONE, to a Punkt MP02. It stays at home most of the time too but is small enough to fit in a dress shirt pocket.

People are so crazy about phones that my own family will gang up on me and mock me for not having an iphone like them and when pressed for a reason why I should have an iphone instead of an Android, crickets.

I'm gonna lose some nerd cred here, but I have an iPhone. I only really use it for work, the only non work people who have the number are my siblings. I keep the thing on shelf at home and dont interact with it 90% of the time. I've thought about getting something like 3310, but... I have to use authenticator for work, and having the hotspot for in the field work is really nice.

That's a really nice video. I wouldn't have thought that someone like you thinks like that about cell phones regarding all your "tech" videos. But I like that and I support the message you're trying to say. Also this motivated me even more to not use my phone :) You have some pretty strong points in this one.
@albioncia5 жыл бұрын
well there is this tool called adb and you could delete any aplication on your phone without root. many tech savy people avoided root because theyllose their warranty so they just disable or put their app in one folder and forget about kt

I use a Nokia 106. I had an Android phone before...... yes it is useful and convenient, but I realised that I actually hated it. I broke it, got myself the Nokia and I am quite happy, don't wanna go back.
