Im a boxer, and so true about choosing BJJ as a first discipline if doing MMA. Fear is the biggest impediment to learning and if you fear pain or getting hurt like a striking sport than it will slow your progress. That's the advantage of learning BJJ first.

Hey Coach, training the abs safely and effectively is not about hinge vs spinal flexion. The lower abs flex the spine. It's just about finding high quality movement that allows you to keep steady tension vs jerky motion as crunches typically devolve into. Hanging leg raise is the best as you said, its just not a hinge. ♥️💪
@CoachZahabi
@CoachZahabi 6 жыл бұрын
Yusuf Clack thanks for the input. Do u have a reference? If so I will make a correction next episode.
@YusufClack
@YusufClack 6 жыл бұрын
Hey my brother, it might just be a different usage of the term "hinge." Hinge is typically used to refer to flexing the hip as in a deadlift or kb swing. We know that one of the functions of the Rectus Abdominis is to flex the spine as well as rotate the pelvis fwd. www.knowyourbody.net/rectus-abdominis.html -- so to really work the abs beyond isometrics, one would actually want to minimize involvement from the hip flexors vs focus on a hinge (as I understand a hinge). I think McGill's objection to the crunch (could be wrong) refers to the stereotypical crunch, especially as done in combat sports gyms, Rocky style, speed, failure, and TONS of reps, endless. Once the abs tire, the discs absorb the brunt of the work, as the cruncher tries to bounce tension through his frame vs use his abs. But there are movements like the "deadbug" or even a high tension crunch on a ball, where tension is maintained in the abs throughout the movement. The spine is flexing but all the force is being held in the core. TL;DR Spinal flexion is not the devil, but the losing of awareness of what is happening while training the trunk, doing mindless, endless reps is.

On the topic of running, it's basically in terms of energy systems a good way to train your aerobic system. The aerobic system is crucial for recovery from high intensity work. because by your philosophy of consistency and not going hard every day, you are doing loads of aerobic work anyway, which is generally below 150-160bpm. I think running is just an easy way to maintain a bpm of 130-150....

agree that BJJ is the best way to start. Primarily because you can go full out in sparring and not get hurt because you can always tap. Striking is a bit more dangerous, especially when you spar against beginners that cannot control their strikes.

Hi, love your podcasts. Just wanted to clear a question that was boggling my mind recently, in regards to what the optimal weight for a professional mixed martial artist would be, in comparison to a competitive street fighter, who does the same thing yet, in the absence of gloves and rules? In professional MMA, our incentive to lose weight is often associated with the competitive advantage it brings in fighting the smallest guys. However, in street fighting the possibilities of potential fighters isn't limited to the confines of weight, rather at times it is likely we may be faced with the predicament of fighting people substantially larger and stronger than us. In this scenario, would it be advisable to carry some extra body fat as to reduce severe mass discrepancies and to provide some added cushion for defensive purposes? Thank you for your time!

46:27 coach, keep going with your research on fasting and blood glucose. We don't need sugar/carbs. The most efficient macronutrient to burn is fat. Yes, the sugar and carbohydrates are a performance enhancer, but just know that it's at a cost... Inflammation. It's not to say you can't train while burning only fat.

Coach Firas, need your advice. In my class, I have 50-year-old recent blue belt who does not like to guide the basics, does not like to discuss on any questions, curses a lot, randomly says to shut up to lower belts or newbies and unfortunately, the instructors at my school are Brazilians and they do not understand English. It just makes me feel sick when I go to class. I do not know If I should I stop going to the class and work at the home gym, because of me being vocal and trying to correct him made things even worst and I keep getting verbal attacked and bullied, I initially thought BJJ is a great sport BUT lately started to realize it is just creating a negative energy, I am a contractor, I work with military and best folks in IT, I also do auditing for instructors on various aspects from technical to non-technical, combat sports is my passion and always has been. I do not want to go back to my old mud dog days of back and forth silly arguments or getting personal/physical. ATM I am completely avoiding him and basically, he is non-existent to keep my focus and positivity, appreciate if anyone has a better way for me to deal with this type of situation. REMEMBER I am 33 years old looking for wise advice.

Ash there’s toxicity in all walks of life my friend and unfortunately sometimes it finds it’s way into our gyms. If I were in your shoes and politely addressing the man doesn’t work and only escalates the situation I would just do my best to ignore it, avoid him, and also inform your peers to steer clear of him because he’s an asshole. If that doesn’t work I would either find a new gym or inform the instructors that he’s bullying their students I’m sure they wouldn’t appreciate that... if the instructors do nothing then definitely find a new gym because that’s a big red flag

@ogrbell8297
@ogrbell8297 4 жыл бұрын
Diamondback MMA im not Firas. The answer is yes, but no. Follow the 80/20 principle To sharpen up your strikes without forgetting what you know. Put 80% of your training into it. Do it first just like he says. Then spend the next 20% simply maintaining your grappling skills. I did this going from wrestling to Lethwei, then into boxing, then into traditional muay thai and finally jiu jitsu with breaks in between where I reverted to only MMA to kind of meld as much of the basics into a homogenous art for MMA. Learning to transition between varied striking and grappling arts is only getting better in the top competitors but is still rarely taught outside pro gyms. You gotta do it yourself, or fork over 5-10k for a training camp.

So firas I like your stuff but I respectfully disagree doing two things at once sometimes I get way more done bc I’m not reaching “burn”. Which is actually something I learned from you. Two examples one I split and loaded firewood in my truck. I implemented Into a workout. I would do burpees sprints jumprope pullups then split a couple pieces of wood loaded it. And repeated several times. Next thing you know I had a splittes load of firewood in my truck. And a very good workout completed. Also when I clean my house I make it into a game. I go from room to room competing small tasks as I’m doing laundry. Come out in an hour w a very clean House doing a bunch of small tasks simultaneously.
