So a friend of mine told me about a 1958 Kenworth needle nose for sale at the upcoming auction so I just had to go down and take a closer look. I was not disappointed as it was a very cool old Kenny but it sold for a little more than I wanted to spend. However, since I was there, I decided to take a closer look at the rest of the iron to see what else was out there and how much it was going for. I still can’t believe what some of those newer KWs are selling for … when did used trucks start selling for $300 grand??
Hope you enjoy the video and thanks for all the comments, suggestions, and support!
Keep in mind, I know a little about a lot but not an expert in anything … just doing the best I can, learning as I go ... I do all my own stunts
Enjoy watching the progress of this ongoing Peterbilt 359 restoration the Kenworth W900A Smokey and the Bandit tribute project, and the upcoming #IronDuke Kenworth K100 cabover I’m planning to build up like the one used in the 70’s trucking movie High Ballin’ with Jerry Reed and Peter Fonda.

Due the increased exhaust temps from burning the def they need those fish gills to pull in fresh air and lower the exhaust temp so it can't start grass fires.
@MacAttack1776
@MacAttack1776 Жыл бұрын
Bigger issue is the DPF’s when it comes to exhaust temps. Takes a lot of heat to burn up all the soot inside. Combine a truck pulling a load down the highway and a rolling regen.. you can smell the heat coming off that sucker.

It would come with a 13-18 speed with all the chrome and air canisters and real stacks. I just love the old trucks just as you do. I appreciate you and we have the same thoughts on pretty much everything. I have so much respect for you. I agree completely.

Like many people have said, the cutouts in the exhaust tip are meant to diffuse the tremendous heat generated by the self cleaning process of the Diesel Particulate Filter. It literally burns the soot it collects, turning it into ash. If you drive a truck that breathes through external cans you can hear the roar of those flamethrowers behind the turbos firing up to get the DPF hot enough to burn the soot off! Earlier engines had an extra injector and spark plug behind the turbo to make it happen lol.

Hi Mark I finished 7 years ago uk 🇬🇧. They were bringing in auto box front facing cameras and driver cameras so at the end of shift you were debriefed on your driving . I am sure that the internal air filters lead to better aerodynamics and better fuel economy, but I agree that external cans look cool. No external air cans, no stacks, and automatic transmission is making heavy duty trucks more like giant pickup trucks. As Bob Dylan sang, "oh the times they are a changin".

Old school is great. Love them. BUT. I have bout 2 three year old Cascadias for my new company for $70 000 combined. Took another 17k to make them fully road fit. They aren't pretty..but I'm in it for less than half the price of a shook down clapped out long hood. I'd love a 379 or a w9 one day. But as long as I can buy a decent aero truck for dirt cheap I'll keep running them. But I love your iron Duke the most I want a coe so bad.

Hey Mark 🙂 The weird exhaust outlets on the DPF trucks are basically diffusers; during the burn-off phase the exhaust temperature is very high so those weird elongated shapes, trick vents and heatshields are there to mitigate that. Progress, eh? Gimme a 3406B instead any day 😉
@notpoliticallycorrect1303
@notpoliticallycorrect1303 Жыл бұрын
The exhaust temperature at the manifold and turbo down to the DOC remains pretty much the same as it would on a long duration run( motorway/freeway) during regeneration, where it occurs passively given the right conditions. Only from the DOC downstream does the temperature raise significantly,and given that almost all DPFs are mounted under the body benefitting from cold air flow, the bonnet vents will most likely be purely to assist 'pull through' for cooling air, it stops stale hot air building under the hood/ bonnet.the less the cooling system has to do then the more efficient the engine is.
@jimdieseldawg3435
@jimdieseldawg3435 Жыл бұрын
@@notpoliticallycorrect1303 Agreed. The DPF is lit-off by (basically but simplified) dumping extra diesel than is required to produce the power and torque deemed necessary by the ECU to keep the truck running at that throttle position and speed, and late in the process so when it enters the DPF it creates a very hot burn and (theoretically) burns-off all those tiny particles of carbon that would otherwise be shot out of the tailpipe(s) ready to clog-up the lung tissues of archaic fleshy things like us. Yay. By-product? Seriously hot exhaust gases. This is why many buses which would previously had a conventional round or oval tailpipe, now have an elongated multi-vaned diffuser outlet surrounded by a heatshield… because the early pioneers of DPF technology learned the hard way that the DPF outlet gasflow was hot enough to cause serious burns to archaic fleshy things. Nobody would spend cash developing weird and wonderful tailpipes and heatshields unless they had to; they have businesses to run and customers to milk for profit. Scorchio! Progress.
