Broken ring. Try this. Plug a load in one socket and establish a LN pair. Unplug temp load. Take the L and the other N and connect to breaker. Take the N and other L and connect to Neutral busbar. So now 'half'the ring is reverse polarity. Take socket tester to each socket in the ring and find where the polarity swaps over. Broken ring - take two (after going to bed) If L1-L2, N1-N2 & E1-E2 are not rings, next tests are: N1-Nbusbar, N2-Nbusbar, E1-Ebusbar & E2-Ebusbar To examine the possibility that the wires/circuits are rings but their other ends are connected to a different breaker. NICE ! Do not assume cos it's neat, it's been done by a competent electrician ! A good electrician would tag each wire/cable with a circuit number ferrule - wouldn't they ? :)

@@dsesuk Well, you've got the loose ends handy already and it'd save taking loads of sockets off the wall to inspect wiring - not that that's a bad thing - just a pain in Nige's crack. I've updated that comment with the suggestion the two rings could have their other ends share another breaker. Sparky's just miss-paired the ends. Interesting result though - 2 rings with a pair of 32A breakers - giving 64A on both rings. This'll be the in-wall heating as well as under-floor. Now you know why the g/f has a sprinkler system - all the wood in them floors! As for the tape measure - thought you could have used flexi spy cam to see what it was stuck on !

Hi david when installing an earth rod is there a best location to put it . Like a flower bed where they water regularly or is it best out the way. And would you also use a 16mm earth
@dsesuk5 жыл бұрын
Hi Greg. I'd try to site it close to the CU and somewhere that leaves it visible for future inspection but where it's not likely to be damaged or disturbed. I would use a 16mm earth wire to keep the resistance as low as possible. A flower bed may be an option, and we saw such in our recent domestic EICR video, but you'd want to ensure it's not likely to be damaged by someone swinging shears and spades around and that there are no nearby large trees or bushes whose roots may push it up over time.

Should a new consumer unit be labelled with the installer details ? Is there any reg on it?
@dsesuk5 жыл бұрын
An excellent question Ben. Reg 514.12.1 requires the inspection and testing label to be affixed, and any new installation or retrofit consumer unit shouldn't be going live without full inspection and testing of all final circuits, but that label is, in my opinion, woefully unfit for purpose as it only requires inspection dates, not an installer ID or certificate/report reference number which my stickers also include. Part 6 lists the requirement for certification, and for that certification to be signed by skilled persons, but other than that identification on the certificate, no other identifiable details are required to my knowledge. I would think that any diligent installer who does this as their profession would be happy, even proud to slap on a label with their details. Where it's missing, I always suspect it's a duff job, either by a non-electrician, or by someone saving on the pennies by not providing the paperwork.

The red incomer switch on the top consumer unit. Is this the main switch for *both* consumer units?
@dsesuk4 жыл бұрын
The Proteus CU is a double-stack board, so although it looks like two consumer units, each with it's own cover, it's really a single DB. The tails go into the main switch, then off to the two RCD's.
@johnburns40174 жыл бұрын
@@dsesuk Thx. It looked that way. Never dealt with Proteus. So from mainswitch two tails (joined into one terminal for mainswitch) to each RCD? How does it get from mainswitch to both bus bars?
@dsesuk4 жыл бұрын
@@johnburns4017 A few brands make stack boards, Hager being another example. I've never installed them myself, although I have come across them. From the main switch, there is a connection to in the input side of each RCD. Can't recall how it was done in this case, but I think it was with insulated copper links. From the output of each RCD is a busbar to feed the final circuits.
@johnburns40174 жыл бұрын
@@dsesuk I wonder how they do it if both CUs are all RCBOs. I can only think of 25mm or 16mm tails between the two CUs, either with crimped lugs or soldered ends, into the terminal of one of the RCBOs in the sub CU and into the out terminal on the mainswitch in the master CU. Both in the same terminals as the bus bars. Or use these: www.soddele.com/busbar-accessories/mcb-busbar-c45-adapter-box-1p-2p-3p

I know there are some good tips on finding that out but fir ease I would say just turn off the circuit in question (with the rest of the board live) and martindale it, that way it will remain live with the other leg coming from another mcb. I am sure the multiple layers of chipboard in the flooring were specified by that well known Swedish architect 'Fok Thy-Bolder Söderströms' who as we all know now likes it deep and thick and that must have been a very awkward site meeting when he met the builders onsite and insisted on checking their helmets for Health & Safety purposes....

Built by a sadist that place. They put in truss joists to lull us into a false sense of security, then fitted a multi-layer chipboard floor as the ultimate fuck you!

Nige needs to stop pumping that shit in his lungs, but I doubt he cares anymore,,lol. Looks like a Recording studio with all the different layers of insulation in the flooring?...I have one too, but don't need as much isolation, but electrically i'm thinking of rewiring it to suit...hmmm.Is it a 100A incomer?...loads of circuits to contend with lol. Not being funny but, is that mcb you replaced ok in that board? i know you said it fitted, etc, but what would NICEIC inspector say? this is one of the reasons I don't want to join a scheme, so so many hurdles, and hipocracy man, i don't get it..:-( Great video Dave nice to see the variety too :-)
@dsesuk5 жыл бұрын

@@dsesuk last time I looked they don't conform to current regs, they are 2 wire with a common anti tamper loop rather than FSL.
