I am somewhat in the same boat as you are. I grew out my colored hair color to grey a few years ago and I also have curly hair. But I don't think we have the same hair type. You mentioned that your hair doesn't accept moisture well? Or is it that it sucks it up right away. You mentioned straw, and that is what some of my hair is like and I believe mine is high porosity. Anyway, I feel your pain. The best day for my hair is the day I wash it, then it's all downhill from there. Like you, I want to be able to refresh my hair on the non wash days. I have been following and watching so many curly hair channels on YT. It's so complicated! All the different products and routines! If you have not watched anything about low porosity hair, search for it.

@@cindyc.8625 My hair does not like to get wet. In the shower, I have to massage the water into my hair. And it instantly starts to dry and frizz as soon as the air hits it. Yesterday the sun came out here and the humidity dropped significantly so I had a pretty good hair day! Yay me....finally!

@@cindyc.8625 Oh I don't regret it either. My hair still felt dry when I was coloring it...but the damage from the color make it worse. My hair is so much softer now that I'm fully grey.

Yes, I am having the same issues and I transitioned 2 years ago. If you are going to use heat on your hair you need a curly hair heat protectant. This October I bought a curling wand (not an iron) All you do is wrap your hair around it and there are no flat spots. My curl pattern is different and underneath I have extremely tight curls and on the top, they are so relaxed and some are straight so the curling wand works. I use an Aveda leave-in conditioner daily and wash it once a week. It is a struggle. It turned out well.

I understand you are aware of all the things you don't like because you know your hair intimately. But I can assure you it's not as bad as you think. Certainly not 'horrible'as you describe it. Personally I still think your hair is very very cute and fresh. ♥️

I'm afraid most of us are our own worst critics--and often enemies. We hate our own hair and wish we had someone else's. If we had their hair, we'd probably hate that, too. When I get into the "I hate my hair" funk, I try to think of people who have worse hair than I do (and I'm usually successful at thinking of people who do have worse hair than me) and then I'm a lot happier to have my own hair (as imperfect as I think it is).

Renee I think your hair is beautiful. You were absolutely one of the reasons why I let my hair grow out gray. I'm 65 now and I have shoulder length gray hair and I get several compliments a week on my hair. Whatever you do don't make any impulsive decisions about coloring or whatever. Hang in there with your hair because it's gorgeous.

I’ll feel your pain! My situation is polar opposite but very frustrating! My hair is very straight, way too long (about 6 inches longer then my picture). The layers are all grown out, they’re heavy and I can’t do anything with it! I’m on day 2 of wearing it back in a claw clip. Velcro rollers are doing nothing…no volume or any type of soft curl, trying to curl it all over with a curling iron makes me look like the Bush Queen and the straightener does absolutely nothing. My hairdresser is a busy single mom who has two jobs and a new baby she fostered and adopted. I need highlights like months ago! I’ve been trimming my own bangs which is always a crap shoot! Plus I need to find a good shampoo and conditioner that works and I won’t have to mortgage my house to buy! 😁

Darlin' I wrote about a year ago that this is what "could" happen when you begin the "menopause" journey. EVERYTHIG you are experiencing, happened to me. My hair was very thick, very curly and not fine. I went through complete menopause at 55 but the changes began a couple of years prior, especially hair loss, change of texture (became fine) and areas of straight vs. curly. I went gray 2 years ago, thanks to you but have been struggling of late with the decision too. THANK YOU SO MUCH for this video! You look GREAT! Keep on being your beautiful self. When I started going through menopause, my hair was straight as it could be, but it changed to kinky curly on one side, moderate curls on the other, and in the back where my head hits the pillow, it's a little fizzy. I never try to straighten it. I just embrace what I have and hope for the best.

Your hair is actually very attractive, you're being too hard on yourself. And you don't look old, you have fabulous skin. You mentioned several times you don't like your hair in your face, maybe you'd like a bit shorter layers on top and around the face. A hair stylist once told me that frizz is your hair searching for moisture and she suggested I use a more moisturizing styler. Also, when my curls aren't behaving sometimes a protein treatment helps. When I first went natural I was buying lots of products used by those cute young curlies on social media and they didn't work on me. I finally figured out I needed to find folks with hair like mine (fine but lots of hairs) and use lighter (but still moisturizing) products. My best styling days come with Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave-in on the lower half of my hair shafts, and Bioterra gel.

A couple of suggestions- if you're having trouble with that section, it's likely the side you sleep on. Getting a silk pillowcase really helps your skin and hair. When you wrap your hair around the barrel of the curling iron don't flatten the section of hair. Twist the hair and then wrap around the iron. It will give a more natural looking curl. Avocados are nature's best moisturizer, eat lots of them in the winter. It helps my hair, skin, and nails. As far as hair loss, I started taking Emergen-C, immune plus D. These gummies were life saving for my hair loss!!! Have a Merry Christmas!!

Your hair is like your crowning glory! I started following you during lockdown because I thought I would go grey and I’m curly. Lady-I feel your pain! I went back to coloring because I’m really only about 5-8% white. It kind of just looked messy on me, but someday when I reach that percentage tipping point, I’m doing it. Also the curls are not like in my twenties. I had tight coils. Oh how I loved it! But then thyroid issues followed by menopause. Oh my. I think my issues aren’t so much my hair as they are CHANGES in general. It’s like we’re teenagers all over again! Trying to figure out what works! Sometimes I think it’s easier to just have a wash day when it’s not time and just reestablish that cast on the hair. Also, and this is big, low estrogen not only changes our hair, but our outlook. Some women develop depression, others develop anxiety. Rather than lowering our estrogen we should introduce bio identical progesterone. What is really happening in perimenopause is our progesterone goes away and that causes us to have out of control estrogen. Progesterone keeps it in check. Estrogen is our friend! (Just not too much.) Renee-you and your hair are lovely. Your personality seems to match your looks. That is special!

I know why I am doing this and this is all what matters!

I went grey during the pandemic and have been so glad I did….most days! Sometimes I look in the mirror and think OMG I look so old! But my hair is so much healthier. My grey hair is such a different texture than my dark hair used to be, but even with color the grey was still under the color and still the wonky texture. And the grey matches my skin tone much better than the colored hair did. It is hard to pull off dyed dark hair the older we get. I love your grey curly hair!

Renee, I have been a hair stylist for 43yrs. I also have naturally curly hair. 1st I will say naturally curly hair is not uniform, the curling iron idea is a good idea that I have had to do, but the first thing to do is wet brush your conditioner through your hair in the shower and let sit till the end when your done and rinse. Then put a curl cream, then some kind of gel. Brush through segments up off your scalp and gently shake to a ringlet. When done scrunch and diffuse. Then the next days I just stay with water and scrunch. Good luck girl. 😊

Hi Renee, I am grey and curly, wavy. I wash my hair upside down in the shower with MopTop products. There is a light conditioner and a Leave in conditioner. (plus shampoo, of course.) I wrap my hair in the towel like you do. I never use a brush. Before I put it in a towel, while upside down, I finger out any tangles then scrunch my curls. Sleep in a pineapple at night rewet upside down, if needed. Curly hair does what curly hair wants to do. MopTop also has a gel to leave in which I put on after the towel and pineapple if still wet. Hope this made sense. Good luck! 🕊🎄

If you wanted to color again, don't do chemicals. Use henna (for red tones) or henna with indigo (for brown/brunette tones or pure black). Henna fills in cuticles with permanent color, it does not strip color (through bleaching) before you are supposed to color; or open the cuticle wth peroxide (demi colors) to then deposit more damaging chemicals. It actually fills in the cuticles, which is notorious for calming frizz & elongated hair shafts.

I’ve ridden the struggle bus too! I let my grey grow in when I turned 40, and 2 years later I had a moment of weakness and got a box of color and regretted it the first time I had to touch up my roots again. 😩 So I went thru the whole process AGAIN 🤦🏼‍♀️ and I can tell you I’ll never go back. You are beautiful and your grey is gorgeous! I don’t have the same texture as you but I do know that silicone or sulfate products don’t serve me well at all. I do need a very hydrating conditioner and sometimes a leave in. Try to push thru it! The rainy weather will end and the cold weather will probably make your hair happy. I’m in Florida and know what you mean about humidity! Good luck!

Oh girl, we could be hair twins. I just turned 65 in November, and I refer to my hair as “naturally crazy”. It’s curly, it’s wavy, it’s naturally crazy. My curl pattern has definitely changed since going gray. I am seriously thinking of shaving my head. I’m curious if my curl pattern will come back differently, curious if my grays will come back differently. The struggle is real. Plus I have to pull it back & wear a baseball style hat at work. So that doesn’t help. Took me a minute to write this cuz I was laughing so hard I was crying. Thanks for the chuckle, Renee. So glad you did this video. Happy Holidays.

Renee, my hair is curly due to having breast cancer 3 times and all the chemo I took. Chemo drained the color from my hair and changed my eye color from brown to brown & green! I tried to go grey buy can't do it all the way. What I do is get L'oreal with 2 step color and it has a pointed brush in it so I load the brush with color and streak it through my hair so I have a grey, light brown and some highlights. I love it! I have always done my own hair, cut and color but I did try to go grey and couldn't live with it. I am 61 now.

Like you, I stopped coloring my hair and went grey. I have different "colors" of grey--dark and light (white). Like you, I have curly hair, although mine is less curly than yours. I quit getting my hair cut during the pandemic and just never went back, so my hair is long now and the top is wavy and the ends curly. We went through a lot of rain earlier this week and the frizz was just unbelievable. Today is sunny and the frizz isn't quite as overwhelming. I've found that the less I try to "do" with my hair, the better it looks. I can really mess it up when I try to "do" something with it. I'm certainly not very skilled at fixing hair, so I just don't bother (same with make-up; when I try make-up, it looks like a 5-year-old with an unfortunate tic got a hold of my face with crayons). But I think your hair is beautiful--even when you think it looks horrible. Both my husband and I are losing hair right and left and we can't blame medication. I think we're just getting old (I'm 67, he's 73). Hair everywhere; we shed more than our dogs and cats do! So when you say you feel old and frumpy, here I sit--older than you, with not a bit of make-up on my face; and hair that just does whatever it does. And heat just really damages my hair--I can't even blow it dry with a diffuser. It just fries my hair. But I'll never go back to coloring my hair. The expense, the time, the hassle. No thanks. Just take whatever God gave me and live with it.

I love your hair😊 But I get you. I am on month 8 since I last colored my hair. We just bought a house with a pool. I questioned myself why should I keep coloring it when it’s going to lighten when I am out by the pool this next year? So I made the decision to not color it anymore 😁 I’ve noticed the section right at the top of my head, where it has the most grey. It’s frizzier than the rest. My favorite products are from Curlsmith but I have been using them for about 2 years now and I have found what works for me. I also use a Denman brush when styling my curls. It has helped me so much. I am actually at a point where I feel comfortable enough to leave it down and not pinning the top back. It’s a process. Thank you for sharing your struggle with us!

I agree with Miriam that your style is very cute but, I can certainly understand the struggle as I am on the same journey in changing my styling routine as my grays come in and my hair thins. Found a video on "Manes by Mell" on what NOT to do with curly hair prep and found out I was doing EVERYTHING she said not to do. Another video told of what products are worth investing in and which ones aren't. This has helped as well. Her tips have made a huge difference for me. I suggested on her channel that she do a video for older curly hair women. Hoping she does.

Hi hon, I have gray thick curly hair and I feel your struggle. A good cut helps, but some days it is difficult. Your hair is not awful, maybe a deep conditioner treatment will help ( my hair loves coconut oil ). Its funny about the humidity, definitely not our friend. Remember silicone eventually coats your hair. I have played around with using foam rod curlers ( skinny) to perk up the dead spots. I may buy one of those skinny curling irons. You can always use a cute fabric headband to put most of it back. Leave the bits out in front that you fixed up. I do this sometimes. Look on Etsy for headbands. I live in So CA, so not as cold here, but I wash every three to four days, use a leave in, and jojoba oil. Put it in a hair towel, 15 min? Then add gel and air dry. Not too much gel. Scrunch and shape a bit. Hope for the best. I use a silk pillowcase to sleep. Results vary! Take heart, your hair came together at the end and you looked lovely. Sometimes the days I am hating my hair are the days others admire it. Go figure!

I have hair very similar to you (color, curl pattern, age) and the struggle is real! One thing you may want to try for hair loss is to eat more protein. I had to when I was losing a bit of weight. Sometimes when you change your diet and lose weight, one of the first things the body says is, "I can let the hair go since we are losing weight." I have been having a lot of frizz lately too and today I added extra gel into my hair routine and let it air dry and that helped a lot. I'll fluff it up from the roots and scrunch the crunch later. You're beautiful, keep it going girl!

Renee, I also have very curly grey hair. In the winter it don't try to curl it. I wash it, comb it and let it dry naturally. After it is fully dry, I put a little bit of hair oil (size of a dime or less) in my palms, rub together and gently work it through. I don't wash it as often as in the summer. My hair is more wavy than curly in the cold months. I like it for a change. My hair is definitely better after a day or two after washing. I love your content. Merry Christmas!

I think your hair is absolutely gorgeous! If it's any comfort I'm straight at the front and barrel curls in the back. I condition the stuff at the very top much more than the rest. Good luck, a year later I bet you have found some solutions!

Remember last week when you got all the compliments on your hair? It is gorgeous. I also have grey curly hair and I find that it changes seasonally. I re-wet potions on day two hair and that refreshes it.

I twist it biweekly or braid it nightly in 4 to 5 braids nightly and the waves come out pretty uniform and lovely consistently. Also banding it elongates the hair. Google these things for black women if that helps. We have mastered this. Heat will make the gray worse quickly. Also embrace your hair as is. Trying to force it is not allowing the natural beauty to shine through. I have gray hair and it is manageable if you work with it and try to control it less. One side of my hair is thinner but once it gets humid it looks full and gorgeous and noone can tell, nit even me. Lol. Embrace the frizz and the fuzz and enjoy the new things gray hair can do. Also i only comb it before i wash it weekly or biweekly so less breakage and hair loss. Learning new practises helps. Its less about the new products and more about doing traditional practises with natural gentle products that women have used historically to preserve and maintain healthy long luscious gray hair. Enjoy.

You are the first one on the internet with hair just like mine! I also went gray about 4-5 years ago, and let me tell you...the struggle is REAL! My very first suggestion to you is, STAY AWAY FROM SILICONES! I discovered that the biggest hindrance to my hair curling properly was the coating of silicones from conditioners and styling products. The hair underneath the coating was dry and course. No amount of conditioner would make my hair soft with bouncy curls. My hair also hates coconut oil...it causes so much frizz (we live in South Mississippi = humidity!). I use only silicone/coconut oil free conditioners, and use a touch of sweet almond oil after washing to help seal in moisture. I also use homemade xanthan gum gel, which locks in my curls, adds bounce and shine. I also never use heat on my hair...I air dry only. THANK YOU so much for your great vidoes on the reality of going gray with naturally curly hair! I am right there with you!

Thanks, I didn’t realize the weather plays such a great role on our hair, I would just get frustrated with mine but I realized with grey hair you have to be consistent in keeping it moist and you must give it the time and care it needs for it to look beautiful.

When my grey hair gets fizzles it is extremely dry. I put oil on just the dry at nape of neck and around my face. It really helps. Heat will only make it dryer! I lost so much hair I had to cut mine and recently started the no poohing. Only natural products on my hair. I live in the south, and our weather has been overcast and rain for over a month!

I’m almost 3years into my gray transition and still LOVING it every day! I don’t style my hair every day so I put my hair in two French braids at least 4 times a week. Sometimes I leave it wavy or straighten it on the weekend. Try different hairstyles !

Hello Rene ..I love your curls and your grey pattern,it's very beautiful.I have only single Grey's scattered all over my head ..I hope one day I actually have a significant amount .You said you shampooed your hair several times to get products out you tried ,I'm sure it didn't help your situation.Being winter pretty soon you'll probably have to moisturize more and def be careful of heat damage . Maybe you should try just small rollers with curling lotion or even have your hairstylist lighten up the hair weight by adding some more layers . Idk ?Best of luck with it and I'm sure you'll think of something 💓

I loved this video!! Rene you made me chuckle a few times on this topic! Only because I have gone through some of the same curl issues. The frustration, odd curls, straight spots, flat spots, frizzy spots....ugh! Also Rene...your hair is gorgeous, absolutely gorgeous. I know you don't see it, and we are usually very hard on ourselves, but really, your hair is to die for. Love your videos, keep them coming!

You popped up on my feed . I have almost the same hair as I . I am 63 yrs young and when I was 58 I decided to go natural so over the dying the roots my hair was dark brown . Then if that was a lot I decided to stop Keritan stop Brazilian stop the flat ironing . I purchased products for curly hair and learned a few techniques . My hair was long down to my back however from my neck down it was stringy soooooo I chopped it off now I feel like I have an Afro lol . My hair is gray , curly , thick , frizzy course textured . If you want to know what I do let me know . Your hair is beautiful 🌻🌻🌻

I can totally relate to the hair loss! As soon as I turned 60 I started losing my already thin hair. Unfortunately, I'm not having great results. Ugh! I started using minoxidil with a little bit of results. Now I also take spirinolacton which is to help prevent hair loss. I know it's depressing to think you may have to deal with these products forever. I certainly feel this way. 😭 Personally, I adore your hair. I completely understand, though, the frustration of changing hair. Love you! It'll get better! 🥰

I, too, take a hair loss med. My doctor prescribed Folic Acid and then doubled the dose a year later. My curly salt and pepper is growing back. I fight the frizzy all the time. Now I have the 3-inch additional whispies. Watch the glycerin content. That will make your hair "damp". You probably need higher protein hair products. Different products also tend to straighten and frizz me out. I like Kerotin for hair growth (right now) and Zotos (available at Sally's) for my regular wash.

I had a lot more hair when I was your age. That must be very upsetting to lose hair from taking a prescribed med... I am 69 and still brunette with henna every couple of months. But my hair is not plump like it was so my cow lick on the back of my head makes me look Bald. I hate that. Please try Sebastian Potion 9. Someone gave me a tube of Generic Concentrated Leave-in Treatment Sebastian Potion 9 but after I finished that I bought the non generic at Ulta. My curls LOVE it. And thanks to you I ordered a silk pillowcase which has not yet arrived. Hope it helps my curly Frizz. I am a late bloomer when it comes to the silk I guess! My mom always told me not to be a slave to my hair!

Actually Renne, my favourite sort of hair is wild natural looking unkempt hair 🥰 Summer's great when you have sun bleached full of sea salt... hair. When I see younger women/girls faffing about with their hair & products etc.. I just don't think it can do their hair any good 😕 From a fellow 51yr old let me say I think you really don't need to worry..your hair looks amazing ✨️ xxx

Thank you so much for this video Renee. It feels like you are living my life! I grew out my hair to gray from March 2020. I have always had pin-straight hair…once it went gray I was faced with a whole new world. I have no idea what I’m doing…I’m now in the process of learning the curly girl method and buying all the products to support my new hair. As far as the hair loss, I have lost clumps and clumps of hair after a recent surgery. It is frightening. I use men’s rogaine every day. It has made a huge difference. Consider using it if you are truly concerned. I think you look incredible!!! Even with the problems you are going through, you always look so put together! But thank you sooo much for putting this out there. I no longer feel alone in the struggle! Merry Christmas! ❤️

First, you are hair goals! I also struggle with meds, age, and weather all taking a toll on my hair. I just did an oil treatment for the ends, and rosemary hair growth treatment for the roots. Maybe that’ll help you for some of the loss? I have natural curly, long, brunette hair. I am only 30-40% gray and it takes a long time to grow in. So, I only color the roots from the top crown to the temples, in front of the ears. I’ve been letting my gray in back grow in, because it’s the section that usually takes the longest to go gray. So retouching roots ever seven weeks from the ears forward isn’t expensive or time consuming. But my curl pattern is opposite of yours. It’s horrible, super curly from the ears forward super curly shrinkage in the fringe area, and loose waves the back. Ugh, I’m about to just straighten it all the time.

Just be aware hormonal changes play more of a role than we realize with hair. Also, even if you color your hair “underneath” is still grey. It will still behave as grey hair does. (From a 40 year plus cosmetologist)

Thank you for this video! I went natural and grew out my color almost 4 years ago. My hair is a mixture of grey, silver and white now. I love the color, but it wrecked havoc on my curls. I have struggled with the new texture since growing out my hair (and menopause) and it threw my already interesting curl pattern way off. Thanks for the tips. You aren't alone on this journey. Just when I figure out my hair, it is a new day. haha!

The beauty of your gray is all the colors of gray that give it such a depth of gorgeous color. You are so pretty with your hair as it is. I'd adore to have your hair. Yep you did the right thing to tell us about it. You gave me a few light hearted giggles. And it is a hassle when hair is different lengths or thickness on certain days and everybody knows how it can affect our moods. And you pulled it off great today. You watch, I bet people comment today at the shop how pretty your hair is! Oh and you are almost done with the ice cream shop! I refresh my hair with a lot of water, a little product, and a lot of scrunching, some of it with the microfiber towel. I don’t waste time with too much finger coiling, but I might do some. Then diffuse. It’s a process. But at 48, I finally feel like I understand my curly hair.
