Are you going grey? Where are you in your transition?
@alisonstinson1255

I'm a natural dark brown, but when I started graying I went blonde. It cut down on how often I had to color. Last march I decided to go gray. I had my stylist tone my hair darker in sections allowing for the gray to come in and blend as naturally as it could. All color is out in the back and only a bit remains in the front due to my style. I know it's what I need to do, but I do struggle sometimes with wanting to color it again.

I tried!! But ultimately decided I wasn’t ready. Was I right? Am I wrong? Neither. I just decided I wasn’t ready but my hairdresser uses a toner on my hair that keeps it dark, but tones my gray hair golden. Looks like highlights.....it isn’t real heavy dark, and still looks a little grayish at the roots. This has been the right decision for me, right now. I turned 50 in January and will be ready to transition at some point in the future. Thanks so much for sharing your journey. It’s inspiring to see your transition and all the in between! You are beautiful!! Inside and out! 💖

I've always dreaded the day I would need to start coloring my hair, because I loved the variations in the colors. Up until my 50's, I had every shade of brown and red imaginable. It sometimes looked metallic. Now, it seems I've lost the variations. I've wondered if it might be time to color, since I no longer have those beautiful gold and copper tones. At this time, I'm still plucking the grays; but a lot less than I have in the past. I'm 57 years old and my silver is few and far between. My hair is probably the least of my worries, as for looking my age; and I probably should just let it grow. My skin is what causes me to look my age. I'd rather have grey hair than sagging skin.

I’ll be 2 yrs this July that I went cold turkey and stopped coloring. It took about 10 months to have all my color cut out. Since last May I’ve just been growing it out and it’s finally past my shoulders. Now just trying to keep it from yellowing. I also use Joico purple shampoo but I also use Redken Detox hair cleansing shampoo (at Ulta) and it also helps take out pollutants and brighten my hair to white/gray. I love my hair. Just wish I would have done it sooner. Thanks for all your info, videos and topics you do I have learned a lot or have taken your recommendations. 😊

I am SOOO grateful it’s all grown back & I joke that “ I don’t understand! It’s grown back grey! How weird!” Not weird.....I’m 64 for goodness sake. Embrace the grey! Be free! Everybody’s doing it! And we are all the more beautiful because of it! Thank you for this little talk. You & your lovely hair are so, so beautiful, what a delight! Hugs from Northern California 😊🌼🌸🌺

I gave up dying my hair about six years ago, around when I turned 30, I have had some reactions to it! 😅 Quite a few people have told me I'm too young to dye my hair white, more have just been like Whyyyy? Then when I tell them that's it's natural colour they are usually shocked and impressed 😅😂

@@ashtrix8413 I had a friend when I was in my 20s who had that black hair with the silver coming in early. I thought that was so cool at the time and have always envied dark-haired ladies with natural curl. I've got the mousy brown straight fine hair that was a pain in the you-know-what to deal with back in the day (I'm near 70 now and retired). I did the frosting AND perming for body and hated the expense, tried to grow mine long but would usually end up tying it back since I'm physically active and hated hair in my eyes or mouth, lol. My mom was a platinum blond from the early 50s and did her own for years. She and my sister thought I was nuts when they saw my grey coming in, and my elderly aunt even gave me a bad time. I laughed at them all and told them they weren't fooling anybody and did my own thing. I cut my own hair, keep it shorter, do some old school rollers nightly and do some teasing and spraying; I like some of the vintage 50s and early 60s styles. I actually get compliments and have saved $$ over the years. No regrets.

@@phyillisowens6491 my hair was naturally light red with almost blond highlights. Now it is a platinum white. I used to be teased with my natural hair when young because of my olive skintone. Now people say what shade of color do you use to get that shade of white. I just say I don't bother at my age late 70's to color my hair and since I am allergy to makeup of any kind my face is natural. Never used it. Then they say you are kidding you hardly have a wrinkle and you look around 50. Then I just say my parents good genes.

I have been steadily going gray since I was 13 years old. I never colored my hair. When I was young others would think I had highlights. I am now 60 and have about 60% gray/40% dark brown hair. Like you I also have curly hair. I have been taking art classes with 20-year-olds for the last 4 years and I'm often asked "How did you get your hair to look like that?" I laugh and say "It grows that way." Be your natural self. Embrace the gray.

@crystalbluepersuasion7556
@crystalbluepersuasion7556 3 жыл бұрын
@@fullyinformed2241 We all need to do what make us feel good about ourselves. I have friends who are older than I am who have chosen to not go gray. They tell me "You are lucky. You have the kind of gray that looks right with your dark hair and your skin color. Mine just looks wrong." Maybe you feel that way, like your gray hair just doesn't look right. There is nothing wrong with feeling this way or with thinking that the gray makes you look older than you are. If you feel that way you can fix it. It has become the norm in our culture for women to dye their hair until they die. According to a survey done in 2008 by Clairol "75% of American women dye their hair. This same survey revealed that 88% of women feel that their hair has an effect on their confidence." So you are not alone. My mother dyed her hair until she died 10 years ago. I was convinced if she had lived longer I would eventually look older than she did. She hated her gray hair but I watched her struggle with it my whole life and I didn't want to feel that way. So I chose to accept the gray along with the dark hair. If you like how your hair looks colored, if it makes you feel confident and attractive, if you are willing to spend the time and money to keep it that way, then You do You. Do what makes you feel good. To me the thought of dying my hair every time half an inch of gray was showing did not make me feel good so I didn't do it no matter how many hair stylists insisted that "You really should color that gray away Honey." We all make our own choices. Choose what makes you feel best.

I stopped coloring my hair about 4 years ago - I'm in my 60's - and my coloring is like yours - gray/white on top and dark underneath. And, YES - I don't care what others think of me. The decision came one day, when I looked in the mirror with my colored hair, and I said, "Honey - you're not fooling ANYBODY - you old!". Yes to Purple Shampoo - it's made such a difference in brightening up the gray. I think so many mature women look so glam and distinguished with their natural grays, silvers, whites and darks! Celebrate your age, and your aging process - so many in the world do not live past the age of 50.

I am 73 and I color my hair. A few years ago I decided to go grey completely and I let my hair grow out. It was a big mistake for me. I have very light, pale skin. I looked quite ill with grey hair, it did not go with my skin color. I saw how bad it looked and after keeping it for a while, thinking I might change my mind, I didn't and started coloring my hair again. I use dark blonde hair color and have a very natural light brown hair and because of the color differences in my natural hair color (dark brown, brown and light brown along with the grey) my hair color looks very natural, it's not all one shade and it's not dark, but a medium to light brown. It truly is very close to my younger days hair color. I dislike white roots coming in so every two weeks I color the top of my head since I have a bob with a side part and that keeps it looking good. I don't look 73, I look closer to 60 and I look healthy, not the way it looked when I let my grey grow out. I don't know how long I'll continue coloring my hair, but for now I love my 6N.

Did a big chop and can’t wait to see how it looks once it’s all grown out! I love all your colors!!! Freedom yes! And my straight lifelong straight hair went curly with menopause! And I loooove it!

Now I have not had haircut all year because of covid restrictions. It is long silver and silky not coarse..I am enjoying this new look even if old ladies usually have short hair!!

I went to Denver and partied with The Rolling Stones on my birthday and I felt so light and free! I couldn’t get over all the compliments on my color - I have my grandmothers grey - silver down the middle and dark underneath- yet I see it transitioning still. 2 years hair color free and loving it! The possibilities are endless when you go grey. I finished my transition about 4 years ago. I've Grey and white hair since my teens, and began dying it when I was about 24 years old (I'll be 52 soon). My husband is very supportive of what I want to do, so last year, he gave me an undercut and shaved my sides. It was an awesome look! Since then, the meds I take have made my hair weak, and before I realized, there was hair all over the house! I've been wanting a pixie for a while, so last week, I gave myself a buzz with a #3 clipper attachment. I've never felt so liberated. I style it with Edge Control gel, and put on a satin wrap cap, it becomes a super cute, smooth pixie!

It has a color pattern that is fun to work with. Just parting on the other side changes the amount of grey that shows. I like being a positive influence for younger women to show that natural hair looks good.

I started going grey at 16 and a few years back at 55 I decided to stop fighting. Three of my kiddos inherited my gene. I am 97% grey or white/silver. I remember the first time I went to a salon for a post grey haircut. An older lady told me she loved my hair and wished her grey was my white silver color. Everything you said is spot on. I never really wore make up and still don't so that is one less problem. I use the blue shampoo not purple, because it is so white, only around once a month. Grey hair can be brittle too. So don't over wash. My hair also still grows fast, even post menopausal. Love my grey!

I tried all the shampoos etc and it just got worse. I have straight hair and it’s very thick. I tried different haircuts and nothing helped. For me, I had to go back to coloring my hair. I also look sickly and tired with grey hair. My complexion doesn’t look good in any light colors (grey, white, off-white, etc). I think the grey can work well on someone like this woman who has a high-contrast complexion: tanned skin, dark brows, dark eyes, and a dark hair base. In my case, I have very pale skin, pale blue eyes, pale sparse brows, pale lashes, pale lips, and my natural hair color is a dull, light mousey brown. If I don’t have color in my hair (and dye my brows, and wear mascara and a tinted lip balm), my facial features basically all blur together and I look featureless and worn out.

Don’t dye it! I remembered seeing my mom grow out her dye. She hated dying her hair, fearful that the cancerous compounds used in dark dye would hurt her. I had the additional “advantage” of not being able to breathe in a hair salon. It set off asthma really bad for me. I could not use ammonia to clean with, I sure was not going to allow it in my hair. I had gray streaks in my late forties and am all white in the front, now. Waiting for the back to go white at 62.

You look fantastic! I agree with the freedom of being yourself and not being bullied by cosmetics companies into believing that going grey equates to letting yourself go. I Found my first grey hair aged 15 - early greying comes from my father’s side. In my 30s tried dying it, the colour wouldn’t take in under 1.5 hrs ended up getting allergic to the chemicals. Grew it out and have never dyed since, luckily I have a lovely sparkly grey; when it yellows in goes the purple hair mask. When I gave up work In healthcare I decided to let my hair grow, to let the curls come back. Yesterday someone said it looked like angel hair - it was extremely windy so my hair was super fluffy! Have a happy birthday.

Like it was something shameful. I'm so glad I did it. And I'm also very glad I don't have to go through the hassle of colouring it so often, just to have the fist greys start to show again in like two weeks. Would recommend. 😊

Think of hair color as good grooming...you bathe, comb your hair, put on some lipstick...you wouldn't leave the house without a bra on...who cares if people know you color your hair as long as it is an appropriate color. You would still shave if you needed to, wouldn't you? How freeing do you want to feel? I'm 74 and a $5 box of Revlon hair color is worth every penny. My opinion is that gray hair makes you look and feel old, no matter how pretty you are.

I don’t consider highlighting my hair, hiding..I consider it makeup for my hair...many women feel they have to wear makeup all the time, but I have been blessed with a clear complexion, and have only worn mascara and a little blush. My mother had naturally black hair and was salt and pepper for years until completely white. I am blonde, and I am not blessed with nice grey hair. At age 63, I have I little bit of silver on top. It looks crappy. With my blonde hair I would feel like a dingy mouse if I didn’t highlight it. So we all make trade offs...I don’t have to wear foundation, etc, I can be ready in 2 minutes every day, so colouring my hair every three months is ok with me. But, if I would look good in grey I would do it in a minute, lol.

@@Katrn30 I hesitated commenting and expressing my true opinion because truly I want to be kind and polite and never be mean and hurt anyone's feelings. Renee is so nice and a very loving person to everyone and especially the story about rescuing Pollux is heart warming and her love is so great to all. She put out this chit chat and, though I wanted to resist so as not to hurt anybody, especially Renee, I risked receiving the wrath of thousands of nice women, I truly feel that a woman should always at any age resist caving in to the cards dealt to us in life. Renee is 50--so young to my 74. I feel she looks old, old, old with that gray hair. She is pretty, vibrant, fit, vivacious, sweet, kind. Her gray hair is distracting. I don't think it is pretty at all. She may have tried early on to cover her grays with a very dark color, which looks garrish on anyone...and didn't like the results. She said her husband would like her hair coppery color. I had my hair colord professionally a light copper blond/brown. It looked great. However, to save money I use Revlon, lightest golden brown for about $5 and it looks natural, not garrish. It is easy--I dump the color and my head like shampoo, wait 30 minutes and rinse and condition. I agree with you here, coloring your hair is not hding anything. I feel it is good grooming like tweezing bushy eyebrows, putting on lipstck or mascara, etc. God's blessings to all.

I am 14 mos. into my transition. The thing I feared the most was the demarcation line but as my hair grew out, I cared about it less and less. One of the reasons: the regrowth of my hair, particularly, around my crown. I get so many compliments and most are not about my grey, but instead they are about the thickness of my hair. Prior to ditching the dye, I was experiencing a lot of hair loss. I also learned about purple shampoo-I also use Joico. I rotate it with two other shampoos so it turns out that I use it every 9 days. It is a bit drying but it leaves my hair bright. Tomorrow, I'm getting a haircut and it's wonderful knowing that I'll be out in an hour instead of sitting there for 45 minutes with dye on my head. I don't miss it a bit. Thank you for your encouragement, Renee!

I’ve been obsessed the last month or so on making the transition I’ve just been hiding my incoming greys with root powder, and I LOVE what I’m seeing I’m so excited to make the change... I may just go to a colorist like Jack Martin here on KZbin and get the whole thing done 🤗

I quit coloring at age 62. The last time I dyed my hair was January of 2018. No regrets whatsoever. I get compliments on how shiny and pretty my hair looks. I know what you mean about your hair matching your skin tones because I look so much better than I did with dark brown hair. To anyone who wants to try it I say go for it because if you hate it you can always start to color again.

What a beautifully honest subject. I finally, at 60, decided to “let it go”! My hair is long, down to the middle of my back and I still have blonde on my ends. But what I did to make it more fun was to use a colored conditioner on the ends! My grey hair is beautiful! I waited until the right time: When I was ready. But I enjoy that fun twist of pink added in and receive lots of compliments. We should all enjoy our “crown”!

I did the ‘big chop’ to 1” long. 4 months later it is a gorgeous curly shiny white/silver. So happy I just went for it. I have used purple shampoo once and it added a purplish cast to the white in my hair. Luckily it washed out.

You were my absolute inspiration, thank you! It’s been a year in February for me so I’m into the second year. I’m 57 and it feels wonderful! I have dark hair and I am loving the look so far but like you, I just want to get rid of the old dyed ends but I have a ways to go yet so I will be patient like you were. You are such a great help to me on this journey, THANK YOU! I love your videos! I’m a dog lover too and you also inspired me with your dipladenias! They are great for my lanai in Florida! Also love your beautiful family videos and trips to Mexico!! God bless you!

I only have three months left to make it to my two-year mark. My hair is now blond-ish looking, not really gray or silver. I tried the purple shampoo but decided that I’ll go with the blonde-ish for now. Your hair looks fabulous, by the way! 👍

This is great. I’m 77 and about to stop coloring my hair FOR THE THIRD TIME! Everything you’ve said is true. My problem was that all the colors that I had worn before (very light skin and very dark hair) didn’t work any. So I went back to coloring a second time. I’ve since spent some time on Pinterest and have learned more about color palettes for my coloring. This is important. Also I didn’t understand how to change my contrast level,since it was so high. Now armed with a better understanding of what will work for me, I can’t wait to get started. By the way, your hair is gorgeous. I love the dark hair in the center.

Thank you. Headband when applying makeup. Simple but so important. I got married in 2018 at 63 years old. The people were horrified that I wasn't dying for the wedding. My hubby to be said I love your gray hair. It was settled. My African american skin with grey is beautiful. I love your hair it's gorgeous

I am 48 and 1 year 4 months in. I have only had a couple times when I felt bad about my transition and was tempted to get my hair colored but I didn’t do it. I actually really like my hair. I’m ready for it to be done growing out already. It’s at just past halfway point and I’m so ready to be done!! Lol I do notice people staring at me sometimes and I wonder what they are thinking but I don’t care if they like it. And I do see people who have darker hair but where the gray is on top is never quite the same color and it just doesn’t look good. I wish I could tell them not to worry so much about the grays! They are not as evil as we thought.

@@truemamle6184 LOL my husband isn't the same man I married either. No one is...we are all constantly changing and growing. Glad you told him to get used to it. LOL I did the same. You must be ready for it that's for sure! People are so crazy how they feel so free to give their opinions no matter what even when its not their body to make choices about.

@Lacey BallofChaosovich I just told them to buzz off and honestly I didn't care enough what they thought. When you don't either then you'll be ready... not your time right now and that is ok. It may be next year or 5 years from now but you will know what your there. Shame on them for being jerks to you. But don't let it bug you and do what you want when you want. Good luck.

@Lacey BallofChaosovich Hi Lacey, I kind of went through the same thing.... so, to somewhat appease others, I colored my hair back black and it looked awful😢! I stayed in the house (pre-pandemic) and wore hats! I couldn't wait for my gray hair to start coming back in...and when it did I was all smiles! I love the pattern I have in my hair, I'm free from color and I'm loving me! Like you, I also have a streak in my hair...soooo cute and I know you are as well 😉

Renee I love your grey, silver, salt and pepper hair. I’m nearly 8 months in and like you look back at pictures of myself with dyed hair and wonder who the hell I was trying to fool. It just looks so harsh and not flattering in the slightest. I hope mine will look as lovely as yours it so suits you. You are so inspiring. I love your videos of Maxie and Pollux too, they are a delight. It’s wonderful how much fun Pollux and brought to Maxxie’s life. Keep up the good work, we need you.

My mom was completely grey by 25. Early greying runs in my family. I started getting greys in my late 20s. It started getting really heavy in my late 30s/early 40s. I resisted it, and never learned how to take care of my curls... until about 45. I'm 49, and totally natural now. I started doing curly girl, did the big chop from shoulder length hair to a very short pixie, because I had a ton of damage from dying my hair. I just didn't have the patience to try to grow it out in stages.

Hi Renee! You were the one that got me through it! lol! In one month from now it will be 2 years for me. Yes, I still have a little fake color that will be gone soon. I agree with you, it is so freeing once you make up your mind to stop coloring. I don't care what anyone else thinks. Life is too short for that. I NEVER give advice unless I am asked for it. Even then I am gentle. lol! Even though I'm over the rough part of going grey (growing out) I still enjoy hearing you speak to this issue. I have also made many discoveries about going natural. ALL are better than coloring my hair. Thank you for this video. PS - Love your Pollux and Maxxie videos too.

My hair has been going grey since I was 18 (I’m 30 now). And since I’ve never been one for having high maintenance hair, I’ve never completely dyed it. I’ll do fun semi permanents or I’ve had highlights in the past, but I’ve never permanently fully colored it so I’m watching my grey pattern develop as it grows in. I’m also a curly girl too.
