Hey Mark, you forgot to mention the most important aspect of this watch, which is the silicon hairspring. That part of the watch will be a-magnetic. It's good to see some Omega tech making its way to the lower Swatch brands. I really like this watch too, just wish it was 38mm with a screw down crown and a proper clasp. I've never liked butterfly clasps, and it's what I dislike most about my Aqua Terra. Speaking of Aqua Terra, I see this watch more as a more affordable version of that watch. I've given Tissot some feedback on this watch on IG, I hope they do listen.

@@Mister_Phafanapolis I doubt it will trickle down, otherwise they will dilute the selling point of the Omega brand. Besides, not every watchmaker would know what to do with a co-axial movement. The great thing about off the shelf movements is you can take them to a local watchmaker and they'll be able to work on them.

I think part of Swatch's ladder is that every watch has to have some flaws baked in, on purpose. Like, "Oh well, this $700 Tissot has issues, better spend $5,000 on an Aqua Terra because Swiss luxury marketing."
@Olumin37
@Olumin37 3 жыл бұрын
Hi-beat is around 36.000 bph or more, so that’s ridiculous. If you are referring to the more standard 28.800 or 4hz, there would be no 80hr power reserve without double barrels. Not at this price point, not even close. It’s a compromise. A lower beat movement is not inherently less accurate, just less susceptible to shock. This issue is however partially made irrelevant through the use of the SI balance spring in combination with a free-sprung balance (and therefore a lack of a regulator). I agree with the size however, 38mm would have been much better. They should have narrowed-down the bezel a bit as well, it’s a bit board in my opinion. Screwed links would have been another nice addition. These are the kinds of things Tissot saved on to reach this price point. Same with the lack of COSC, even though the movement is the same grade as their certified ones. They also could have used a solid-steel (and SCREW ON instead of Snap-off) caseback to bring the thickness down to perhaps 10,5mm while still retaining 100m WR. It also would have increased magnetic resistance even more (faraday cage). A next level improvement to the C07.811 movements would be the addition of a silicon pellet fork and escape wheel to make this movement truly anti-magnetic.

That black dial is really nice and just might be my next watch. I know it looks a lot like a Rolex but that is sort of the point. If that is the look you want but can't justify spending $5K or more for an Oyster Perpetual, the $500 Tissot might be just the thng.

I just got a Joma Certina that has been discontinued by Swatch, specifically to have a 2824-2 movement. I want this watch in a bad way, but just can't get on board with the jerky looking movement that can't be regulated by an average schmuck like me. Maybe I'll make a "Frankenstein" with the movement from the Certina in this Tissot case. I wonder if it is a bolt in swap. Does anyone know? I don't care about the extra power reserve of this new corporate movement from Swatch, and the tried and true 2824-2 with the 28,800 bph looks so much smoother on the sweep, and, one can turn the regulator screw to get it to be very accurate, at least in my experience. Same with any of my watches with the SW 200, and other Sellita movements that I have. But, again I love the traditional look of this Tissot, and think they could sell more of them to watch nuts if they pushed the fact of keeping a traditional movement. Yeah, l get it, new improved technology blah blah blah. But, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The C07.811 (or .111) which is used in this watch is by the way NOT a standard ETA movement. It is based on the 2824-2, It is however a Swatch exclusive movement that is not sold to third parties. That means that a non-swatch-certified watchmaker will not be able to get original parts for this caliber. Many parts are identical to the 2824, but due to the lower beat the parts in the gear train will be different. Also the watch lacks a regulator. A good watchmaker will still be able to regulate this movement, but not everyone will do a good job, and some might refuse. It is certainly not something your should try yourself. Keep this in mind.

Not really, sure you could if you could ensure the crown was securely pushed in the entire time, also keeping as still as possible, as not to add any additional pressure multipliers. Static pressure testing isn't dive testing.

Rather than Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual, I think a closer competitor to this is the SARB, SARX, SARY line from Seiko. I own this watch with the midnight blue dial, it is fantastic, total strap monster. I agree that 38mm would be a little more all day everyday, it would never leave my wrist. As it is, I swap it for my SNKL23 when I get home, just love the smaller watches which disappear yet reappear when you want them to. Thanks for the review.

Is it true that this watch isn't straightforward to service and has a replace-instead-of-repair movement?
@ald4104
@ald4104 4 жыл бұрын
dubbleukay like 90% of the movement out there. I heard that even omega sometimes replace their co axial instead of servicing it. It’s cheaper for the brand to replace it than to disassembled and clean all the parts...then reassembled it.
@AverageBros
@AverageBros 4 жыл бұрын
You're thinking of their Swissmatic movement, which is similar to the movement in the Swatch System 51, that one is considered non serviceable. This one is a lot more like an ETA 2824, from my understanding it's fine for servicing, but it cannot be adjusted without special equipment.

I do like the Certina DS-1 Powermatic 80, although design wise it's a bit more inline with the Tag Heuer Carrera aesthetic vs. being in the more safe design vien seen on the Tissot.

Is the back glass mineral or sapphire?
@AverageBros

not sure off the top of my head but it is a pretty common SWATCH Group practice to have the display back be mineral, considering there's really nothing to scratch it apart from over casual storage pratices

What I would like to know from this review is: if you were to only have one everyday watch, would you buy the Tissot Gentleman Powermatic 80 or spend the extra $500 for the Formex Essence? I'm looking for my first everyday watch that is more dressy than sporty (unlike my divers.) Thanks.
@AverageBros
@AverageBros 4 жыл бұрын
For me, the Essence is worth the extra money in regards to a 'one watch.' I will add that the option of this Tissot Gent PM80 S, plus another $500 piece would also be pretty compelling as well.

I’d really appreciate if you could answer a question for me, I’m strongly considering this watch but would like one I can wear when I go swimming. I understand 100M water resistance isn’t always how it sounds but am I safe taking this watch in the pool? Thank you!
@AverageBros
@AverageBros 4 жыл бұрын
I think you'd be fine for a splash but me personally, I avoid submersion for anything w/o a screw down crown, apart from a few 150m WR models that are marketed specifically for their water resistance.

dont buy it. the movement has plastic parts, if it fails you will have to pay for a whole new movement. and if you want to swim with a watch, buy a diving watch.
@rainerhofmeister6648
@rainerhofmeister6648 4 жыл бұрын
@@cmiguel268 The silicium versions don't have plastic parts, only the non-silicium. How can you see if a Powermatic 80 has plastic parts? Look at the number of jewels. If there are 25, you have a full metal watch. This is the case with the 80.811. BTW, an Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch also has "plastic parts" in the movement. Technical plastic is an extremely tough material, in special cases better than metal. The watch is also fully serviceable by an authorized service station. Maybe you mistake the movement for a Swissmatic. These can't be serviced.

more WR is always nice, for me I think 150m would've been the sweet spot (for this type of watch) or even just 100m with a screw-down crown.

@Justin-ml8id
@Justin-ml8id 3 жыл бұрын
Lol that’s funny. What do you mean by “homage”? It copies the sarb? The indices are different, the case size is different, the hand set is different.. maybe those two have the date and dial colour similar lol. Sort of datejust, OP style to me but not “homage” as that’s basically the basic style of watches that’s ubiquitous..
