I agree, he was loyal to his brother Henry V and his nephew...poor Humphrey !

Thank you for a great video. The similarities between Henry VI and Edward IV/V reign are striking, especially with court factionalism. It’s seems like you say Lancaster had a hand it’s own destruction.

Very interesting. One question has always bothered me about this period. Why was Henry IVs usurpation of the throne accepted? I understand the heir presumptive was a minor and the country had just lived through Richard’s reign, but when a couple of generations later Richard III took the throne rather than 12 year old Edward V, his name was blackened for the same act. Given the Lancaster faction was, on both occasions, the beneficiary of this bias.

Henry IV’s usurpation was accepted because Richard II was so unpopular by then that Henry was viewed as a preferable alternative. The Mortimers were overlooked in part because of Edmund’s age, but also because Henry took the throne by force, bypassing any claim they may have had.

@@MattLewisHistory "...but also because Henry took the throne by force, bypassing any claim they may have had.." Same with Henry VII then.

The duke of Gloucester wasn't childless, he just didn't have children born within wedlock, it is also theorised that the two children were from his mistress (then wife), Eleanor Cobham. They were Arthur and Antigone.

Jacqueline de Hainaut died in 1436 not 1428. Much can be explained in European history by her marriage with Humphrey. But no historian British or French seems to care.

The marriage of Jacqueline of Hainault and Humphrey Duke of Gloucester was annulled, o sorry misread your statement. Yeah it was much later in 36

@@MissGroves canceled 1428 a long time before she died 1436. John IV of Brabant died in 1427. Pope Martin V canceled Jacqueline and John's marriage in 1422. Duke of Burgundy did not appreciate that her lands might be the property of Humphrey. In that time in future Belgium, a new lord of Hainaut had to take oath namely, in every City, before every assemblies, one by one (what we call "joyeuse entrée"). In many Belgian cities' archives (Mons for instance), we kept the memories of Humphrey's entrance, either as a namely Lord or as a Protector. This could be a good subject for a thesis.
