Onam is indeed a hindu festival. 1) William, malabar collector in 19th century, wrote in his book 'malabar manual' that "onam is a festival were Lord Vishnu comes to meet the devotees". 2) Francis Day, an english ethnographer said, "it is believed that during onam, Lord Vishnu visits to meet his devotees".

@@copyright16 Ys bro .king mahabali is big devotee of lord vishnu and he is the grandson of prahlada.He is a truthfull king and he loved very much his peoples he treats everyone like equal. In his time there is no lie no sadness only joy and also he is a legendary warrior which even devas cannot defeat him . Under his rule earth became like heaven and he became rightful even for thrown of heaven. Devas started to fear and jeleous. They prayed lord vishnu . But only for the reason of balance of world he appears in vamana avatar in Thiruvonam nakashtra the lord vishnu nakshatra and when he asks mahabali for three wishes he promised to gives without any negotiation. Even guru sukracharya tried to stop him but he gives because he is a great tyagi like karna . And the lord vishnu not punish him. He gives blessings by touching him and push him to sutala world which is more beautiful than heaven and the god himself take the form of gate keeper for that world .the king mahabali only have one wish for lord Vishnu he wants to see his peoples atleast once in a year and lord Vishnu gives it so he comes in every onam Thiruvonam nakshatra to see his people. And u must know he is one of the 7 immortals . This is the story behind kerala onam celebration. We welcomes our king and we celebrate . It's called onam . He is not like other asuras he don't use Vishnu bhakthi for bad things and he don't want anything return for his bhakthi. He is a true devotee of lord Vishnu and he is a legendary warrior.he only place his steps in Dharma marga and also a great tyagi .
