I'm amazed at how nonshalont Teal is with each project he tackles. He seems to know the best way to handle a project by just glancing at it and then BANG....he is finished. He's done and I'm still analyzing what needs to be done! Sniff. By the way Teal, I have a similar problem as you.....a new more exciting project tears me away from finishing that last bit I was working on.....

Hi guys, really enjoy watching your family life onboard and all the projects and progress on refitting the boat. Am a former liveaboard in Toronto now retired in Vancouver BC area. Teal certainly has developed some talents along the way. Just watched the latest episode and think you might be wise to put GFI (ground fault) outlets in both the head and the cockpit and maybe even the galley, anywhere where water may be. Better to be safe than shocked! Keep up the great vlogs and I look forward to many more.
@OnboardLifestyle6 жыл бұрын
I am taking everyone's advice and adding GFCI outlets onboard SV basik in the four areas where the outlets are near water sources. I thought that by making my own isolated circuit with a dedicated breaker would be sufficient but it does not hurt to just add the GFCI outlets for added protection. Thanks for the input
@scottbrown6546 жыл бұрын
I’ll preface this comment with the fact that I know nothing about ship building standards or codes. I noticed that your 120 volt electrical box’s are all open back or low volt box’s. Residential code says that you must use fully enclosed box’s (again, 120 volt) to contain fire from short circuit if a connector comes loose, ect. Is it different for marine applications?

Thought on the bathroom counter latch... from my wife Liz. She suggests flush mounting rare earth magnets in the counter and wall to hold up the counter top for loo access. Thoughts?
@OnboardLifestyle6 жыл бұрын
I played around with magnets a bit and realized that to get them to work I would have to mount them to a stand-off to hold the door or counter in the correct position. They worked fine but I could not get them to hold when I mounted a rubber bumper over them. The bumpers are a must when you have a door that is opened and closed 20 times a day. I will be honest and say that I thought the same thing when I surface mounted the first catch on our upper head 5 years ago. We use it every day and not once has it been an issue. Thanks for the comment.

I think by reducing the stop on the head counter latch you could reverse the catch so that it is down in the counter instead of sticking up where it is a hazard.

I will be honest and say that I thought the same thing when I surface mounted the first catch on our upper head 5 years ago. We use it every day and not once has it been an issue. Thanks for the comment.

I am surprised that Teal didn't coat the exposed edge of the marine grade plywood with epoxy once he cut the hole for the outlet.

Hey Basic crew, I watch Your old videos, and I must say You´re awesome! I wish You to install that hard top, and to covering it with solar panels. Also to get littium batteries. Thickenned epoxyyy ! 😊👍

Where was the upgrade to the beer fridge on the list?
@OnboardLifestyle6 жыл бұрын
Believe it or not...adding a second refrigerator in the cockpit is on our wish list.

Please don’t take this the wrong way but a good alternative to the catch would be a flat chrome steel piece on counter and two 3/4 super magnets on the wall. More than strong enough to hold up the counter during “business.”
@OnboardLifestyle6 жыл бұрын
I welcome constructive conversation anytime Chuck, thanks for the comment!

Onboard Lifestyle I might find rubber foam, but I concede that for some reason magnetism is particularly subject to reduction around rubber. You considered it and had good reason to reject it. Anything that works is a good solution especially with your talents that you have. What control makes the microwave go up or down? Oh I also like the evenly cut herbs in the window

McGyver thinks to himself; let's see, we've got a pair of gas struts and some drawer slides lying around, what can we make with that? ;);)
@OnboardLifestyle6 жыл бұрын
Close, I did think that with the struts but had to get the guides to make it work. :)

115 VAC outlets next to sinks in heads, galley, and outside in the cockpit. Ground fault interruption protection is needed. On boats things fall over, even on catamarans. In the cockpit also, even though the outlet isn't likely to get wet things plugged into it WILL. Cockpits get rained on, the deck gets wet. Now days GFC protection is inexpensive but saves lives. Install them and test them periodically. There are references to it in earlier comments but no reply on the subject from you.

@@OnboardLifestyle Glad to here it Teal, you're doing a fantastic job. To my admittedly limited understanding a standard circuit breaker only provides basic over current protection, i.e. your "whatever is plugged in" draws an excessive amount of current, not where that current is going. GFCI senses when there is an imbalance between the currents in the hot and return wires of the circuit i.e. current conducted on the ground connection or through YOU to somewhere else, and trips an internal circuit breaker. Consulting a licensed (marine?) electrician on circuit design, and inspection can keep everyone safe also. I am not an expert in this area. (INALE?)
