Teal, I would wire those bolts, even if it's in pairs only. Get yourself a stethoscope for listening to those noise's. Fashion yourself up a stainless probe to pin point hard to locate problem's. A screwdriver to the ear works but you can nearly see with your ears using these handy things.

I'm going to place a bet that you don't have this problem again. If you tighten the bolts up. I suspect you nailed it and guessed correctly. Someone probably hand tightened the bolts with the intent to come back around to torque them correctly.... and didn't. I had a bulldozer mechanic, came highly recommended, changed out some hydraulic lines under the steel plate floor. He hand tightened the fittings and meant to come back and tighten them the rest of the way. Two hours into running the dozer and I had hydraulic fluid spraying everywhere under the dozer floor, made a heck of a mess and I worked for an hour removing the steel floor panels and reconnecting lines. Oh, and happy belated birthday Linh.

A great way to secure those bolts so they will never back out is LOCKWIRE. You can get a small jig from aircraft spruce, drill small holes in the heads of the bolts and lockwire them together. They will never move. Aviation does it for a reason. Happy Birthday Linh!!!

That wasn't the birthday present linh was hoping for! But, it is very good that this happened in the right place to get it fixed. Couple of things to note: one Teal was very calm about the situation (this is a big challenge for most of us - especially men) and two, Patrick seemed like a great guy - exactly the type of guy you'd want to find for this problem - and that's a big deal. Others have commented on how much they learned from mechanics like Patrick, and this is how you have to approach the situation as an owner. John Barry (the previous owner of Avalanche) was interviewed onboard his Hammerhead 54 and he talked about having engine problems on several boats he had owned. He too said that he would ALWAYS work along side the mechanic because you learn so much. And who knows when you'll need that experience? You could be 1,000 miles offshore when the same situation occurs again. Thanks for posting this as it's a great example of how to deal with this type of adversity!

Knowing as much as you can about the workings of your boat is very important. Also being able to think through a problem. I remember reports of a lady lone ocean racer whose boat had to run the engine every few days to charge batteries for all the navigation and comms. Equipment. The starter motor failed. She stripped it down but it needed parts so she was back to thinking through the problem. She rigged a number of pulley blocks through the cabin from on deck down to the engine. She wrapped a rope around the front pulley of the engine passing it through the pulley blocks and up on deck. The rope was then tied to the boom. To start the engine simply let the main sheet fly and let sail power whip start the engine.

Marina Del Rey docked, winterized, and developing some very bad habits I blame on spending a winter in Las Vegas. Really hard to imagine but mechanical breakdowns happen to the best of us Teal even brand new motors and components you just hope you have checked everything possible and the good thing is you can get it fixed and probably even better and don't forget the loctite. Linh makes it look easy washing the boat down and I can't stand to wash the siding on the house by myself especially the places about twenty feet up. Enjoy the stay in Mazatlan even though it was supposed to be a short stay but go ahead and make the best of it. Make sure Emma takes in as much as possible and maybe some narrating. Be careful and stay safe God love ya 💓 you guys.

Don't forget to play tour guide, and show us why a trip to Mazatlan should be in our future... Great work on the clean up. It makes a real difference in your mindthought. Hate to say it, but, a quick checkout of the starboard side, might not be a bad idea... Especially if the same folks did both engine installs... Make sure the use of locknuts or loctite, is used on your install!!!

*Linh HAPPY BIRTHDAY. You look beautiful for 30 yo.. seriously.* 😍 So glad the engine issue is identified and the fix is straight forward. 🤞 Perfect place to discover the issue. Teal you da man again, and no doubt in the future you can fix this easy peasy. 👍 Word of the day (Besides Happy Birthday Linh) is LocTite. Order Red (permeant) or Blue (removable) will work; just make sure you *torque them to proper spec for bolt in case type (aluminum/cast iron) Not too much or you may strip the case, and consider use locking washer. Get a tap and chase the threads and clean it out with solvent.*
@haydenwatson79872 жыл бұрын
It is good that you are attuned to the sounds and feel of your boat so that you found that before it became more catastrophic. You mentioned that the saildrives were installed 15 years ago. I think that Yanmar recommends changing the bladders out every 5 years and that is a really big hole in the bottom of the boat if anything happens to it. I think that they have the year of manufacture stamped onto the seal for reference.

You guys are ahead of the curve simply because you are observant and use your senses; sound and feel in this case. I watch a lot of boat videos from different channels and sometimes when they have a problem I wonder how they could have not observed something prior to the emergency. I agree, I would want to do at least an inspection on the other engine while waiting for the parts, if you crack it open and see loose bolts you may have saved yourself buying new bolts 🤞🏻if worst case and bolts are out, you know how to fix it, and you just wait another week for parts but at least you've caught it , and best case all the bolts are tight nothing to worry.
