Great job and thank you for your commitment.

Thank you Rob. Very informative and I like the way you explain the difference between single coil and Humbucker. I'm in my 70s and very new to electric guitar and pedals it can be very confusing. I think I have a little bit better understanding of how this all works.
@davidburgess3579
@davidburgess3579 5 ай бұрын
If you have a humbucker but you only have on amp distortion, if you set it to the right level you can use the pick-up selector switch as a poor mans distortion pedal (although there's still a tiny bit of distortion on the single coil). Works with the Blues setting on a Line 6 if you set the gain knob to the right position. Useful as to my ears the Line 6 doesn't have Overdrive (which I understand as being distortion you can control with how hard you play).

do a all metal/deathmetal fender setup. Like a twin reverb with fender pedals to get the right tone, and either a strat/tele or a baritone jm/fender bass vi. Hell if you can find a 7 sting squier or know someone with one of those custom shop 7 string ag strats, use that. I gotta see and hear all fender metal.

Merry Christmas and great video Rob! I used to record and play live with a Roland JC120 (Jazz Chorus) solid state amp with two 12” Roland speakers; the amp was true stereo with each trans amp getting its own speaker. Wonderful combination until I lost both JC120s in a house fire. Fortunately I had the Ibanez TS9 pedal at home and it still kicks solid state amps into sweet O.D. Next year I’ll replace it with a smaller JC amp. Rock on!

PS: forgot to mention I used this setup with strat copies on either position #1 (woman tone) or #2 (rhythm & middle pickups) and got the “go to” rhythm sound. On #4 (mifddle & bridge) it was more Harrison-friendly and on #5 (lead) it would cut through for solos. Still have that strat and others!

I’ve been playing for some time and this was still a very informative video. I have a few ODs stacked similarly. I’d be really interested in the “complicated” stuff you cut out of the final video or a bit more advanced lesson. My Vox AC15 doesn’t have a gain knob, so most of my OD comes from pedals when using low-mid volume.

Merry Christmas to you and your family Rob. Great vid ...just what I've been looking for. I've been playing for a number of years but my job keeps me moving around do i play mostly unplugged. I watch a lot of vids on pedals but was initially baffled by some of the terminology.....'bright' means more treble....'dark' means more bass etc etc. Also I had no idea that 'level' was the volume and 'drive' meant more distortion. I'd appreciate more individual pedal breakdowns like this as I'm sure, like me, there are many players who've been playing for years yet know next to nothing regarding pedals. For example, I understand there are sequences in a pedal 'chain' where you would place different types of pedals.

That's how I try to use my Soul Food > TS8 Mini. Soul Food brightens the sound and adds A LOT of volume and crunch into sound, TS8 gets that compression. I still can't get it all tuned out right with the amp since the guitar is new, but yeah this is a great way to use pedals, I was surprised when I've learnt about it.

Very nice! But it might also be an interesting other way or solution to show to people, how to use a germanium transistor equipped "Treble Booster" into the tube amp. In conjunction with extensive use of the guitars volume knob a big "range" ;-) of more and less overdriven sounds are to achieve. (And how it tightens the bass and pronounces the upper mids to "cut through" in any situation, which might not be the most pleasant sound heard "alone", but is super useful in a band context and in a mix context.) For bedroom volume purposes a reactive power soak might have to be added. This would be a great opportunity to show it, too!

So, basicaly what you demonstrated is using another OD pedal to act as a lead channel on your amp. I really love this concept, cause you can put very different flavours to your current setup, without buying new amp. I also love to stack many OD pedals with gain low to add more and more dirt to my tone insteadof one dedicated super gainy pedal. To my ears, this sounds more natural.

Rob really dumb question here... since you typically want to run your time-based effects in the FX and your others in the front side of the amp. I have never really done that so (unexpectedly I hope) I have a question concerning the signal chain. Am I correct in assuming that typically you want to run your delay, chorus, and modulation effects in the FX loop? How would you hook that up in the Fx Loop? Does it go Send to the input-side of the effect then, the output of the pedal to return?

Yes, I and Chapman guitars have donated many guitars over the years to many charities, more recently around 12 guitars to the Musical Community Alliance who passed them on to schools, organisations and people who really need a musical instrument. Chapman guitars is bigger than just me, it’s myself, Lee Anderton, Andy Cocklin, Dave Hollingworth, and the many other staff who work at our company. We would never lie about giving guitars to charity, we just don’t particularly publicise our charity work because we’re not doing it for publicity. I hope that helps answer your question.

@@scotts.8460 I mean, they could be, but typically aren’t. Usually overdrives and mics use different cable connectors and the results would be...odd...anyway. Reverbs and even delays can be used with vocals, but this is more often done on a sound board rather than through pedals. To be fair, vocal effects pedals do exist, they’re not as universally used as pedals for guitar. I think what Wingdwolf meant was that he sings and plays guitar, but since the singing is his primary expertise he struggles how to understand where to use pedals with his guitar.

@@davedavem It is, that's why I've moved here ;) If you ever decide to give Malta another try: May, September and October are perfect. It's warm but not scorchingly hot. Kind of the sweet spot, weather wise. As a tourist winter is OK as well, staying in a hotel room with AC (that doesn't run on your dime) is very different from living in a regular house. When I moved here 2 years ago I only had stayed in hotels so I left the AC in my bedroom switched off. I'd come from Germany where it was -5°C or something like that and Malta was around 15°C so I though I'd be alright. HUGE mistake. I woke up in the middle of the night, shivering badly. I'll bet that NOT a lot of people know that with a TubeScreamer, "noon" on the tone control isn't "flat"... All the way to the left (or off) is "flat"... If ya don't believe that, give it a try... ;) Been playin 20+ years, and I recently found that out... Great video, btw, Chappers...

Not at all...A Tube Screamer will never be "flat". It will always have some sort of rc filter active when engaged. All the way to the bass side: When fully toward the (+) end, the R8C6 network will be placed in parallel with the low pass filter, resulting in a second order low pass filter, with a very low cut-off frequency that will remove all the treble. All the way to the treble side: When fully toward the (-) end, the R8C6 network will be placed as an active high pass filter, the network shunts feedback frequencies above 3.2KHz to ground. Resulting in a bandpass filter = R7C5 (LowPass) + R8C6 (HighPass).

Wow, Merry Christmas to all. Not sure how I ran into this video but I sure am happy I did. I am a complete newby to learning guitar (about four months now). Rob, you did an excellent job explaining about and how to use Overdrive Petals. Not only did you answer all my questions I had but even answered questions that I hadn't even thought of yet. Great Job and thank you. Especially for explaining in a way that us noobs can understand it all. Subcribed.

Happy Christmas folks! I get the opposite with my humbucker vs single coil, more output from the single coil... I could leave this comment as is and confuse some people, but I suppose I’ll point out the reason is that I have passive humbuckers in my SG, and the EMG T system (active) single coil on my home built tele 😉 Anyways, great video, as usual Rob. I don’t like to plug other peoples channels in video comments, but for folks still trying to understand ODs and soft clipping vs hard clipping vs transistors; so forth that you mentioned researching in the video, Josh over at JHS pedals did a video on their channel a couple of months ago that gives a really good explanation of the differences if anyone is looking for that info. Cheers!
