All I could think of at the beginning was the Beverly Hillbillies and that old Dodge truck they drove with Granny in the rocking chair. These gals are the girl version of Laurel and Hardy - good clean (messy, but not dirty) fun.

Yes, I can easily imagine this movie starring Laurel and Hardy.

But the difference was that Laurel & Hardy were equally funny looking, Thelma Todd was too glamorous to play the freaky misfit and Kelly to play the straight woman so they assigned their roles in the reverse and I think it seemed to work.

@@rossdelain1645 I agree, in fact, I think both women were attractive, but Kelly could play that down and be goofy looking while acting goofy. They're both enjoyable to watch as they get into mischief.

I'm thinking that this is an indirect commentary on the 1930s Great Dust Bowl and the multitudes of agricultural migrants escaping to California. Yes it's a comedy but also a societal critique. This slapstick short is hysterical, but when you think of the misery behind that trek it's very heartbreaking.
