Lately I've found that if you start as a closed crew with a guild/captained ship, you don't lose captaincy. Only when I'm playing running a guild crew does it happen. Also, I suspect (but can't confirm) that the steam network disconnecting is the culprit.

If you spot a boat has kegs in their crow's nest, maybe don't sail directly behind them? 🤷‍♀ Boat despawn timer is 10 minutes, not 5 minutes; the keel must be grounded for it to start and harpoons not working is the confirmation.
