Coma is their best and longest song. For this one Axl says the song is from the perspective of someone young and ignorant from a small town who has just arrived and is trying to survive in a big city. Someone he isn't, but a lot like he used to be when he first got to LA from Indiana. Slash, the lead guitarist of the band, is half black so I believe him about the lyrics not being sincere, but he certainly does sing it like he means it which makes the song. If you can believe it theres only 4 new songs on Lies and this one isn't even the most offensive or indefensible, that prize belonging to kinda catchy but quite repetitive joke track I Used To Love Her (But I Had To Kill Her) which was in impressively poor taste upon release and has aged terribly on top of that.

always like cival war. this song too, it's so catchy and i'm not at all offended by anything. i think anyone who suggests this song, to new immigrants/black people/gay people are really trolling lol. remember tho, slash was a part of this, and his mom is black. they attack racists too, i think they just dislike everyone lol

I'm always a proponant of reactors showing authenticity by getting into deep cuts, not just the hits. So look into Rocket Queen and Dead Horse.

The song recounts a small-town American's eye-opening encounter with a different side of the country. In the final verse, it cautions that narrow-minded or prejudiced individuals should not blame the narrator.

Prejudice individuals? You mean like rappers and their racist and myso lyrics?

If you pay close attention, you'll see that before he disavows prejudice in the third verse, the 2nd half of the second verse- after the diatribe about homosexuals and immigrants -the perspective shifts. That verse ends with him saying he's not only got his own faults himself, but that the only problem in this equation is actually him instead of the various groups he was ranting against. He essentially confesses that he's crazy and difficult to get along with, and he should reconsider some things. After the guitar solo, he begins the third verse disavowing his previous biases showing the evolution he's undergone.

Notice how it flips in the final verse, he seems to move away from his earlier attitude and doesn't want hardcore bigots to think he's trying to be like them. This is an interesting song with layers. He's like a lot of people with prejudices and narrower views but is willing to be enlightened.

This song sparked a great deal of controversy at the time that haunted the band for years. G N' R used to downplay the true intentions behind the song, claiming it was from the perspective of someone from a small town. The final verse shifted the narrative, likely as an attempt to mitigate the anticipated backlash. Axl later admitted the song was based on his own negative personal experiences in his youth. However, he has since evolved as a person.

Great reaction to a jarring song, when I first heard this I think it was 1989 (I was 17) and I was like oh man, this is going to piss people off. You asked what's my favorite GNR song? Well that would be Rocket Queen off of Appetite for Destruction

it's about how obviously wrong racists are, how there is no such thing as a master race, only everybody being just one in another million. People just lock into the offensive words, which Axl put in on purpose to be shocking.

Easy to go for the low hanging fruit for most. Gangbangers were known throughout the 80’s and 90’s as niggas not the other word. So it’s calling out an area and a time and being true to that. I’m just glad people are listening and hopefully getting something not just hearing negative vibes. When this came out my mate were black, like zambia and they loved it. Just my opinion and experience 🇦🇺

He missed the entire point of the song. It’s not about hate. It’s about a small town boy being exposed to the the reality of the streets. He’s not saying every black person is selling gold chains on the street. He’s just talking about the every day criminal element he was exposed to. It’s just the truth. A lot of people do move here and refuse to adapt to our country. Right or wrong it’s true.
