Karyn's time didn't last very long but she had a handful of bangers during her rather short career.

This is the quintessential tune for a backyard barbecue at your uncle's! It transports me back to my early years. Black radio stations had this on heavy rotation for a long time, and I bet it's still a staple on urban adult contemporary stations. The video was filmed in the basement of Motown Records. And indeed, Dennis seemed to be walking on a cloud of powder.

In the film 'Xanadu' Olivia plays a muse who inspires people to follow their dreams. This song is about that.

Very thorough analysis. You know music, instrumentation, vocalizing, rhythm, etc... unfortunately the video was NOT from the true recording. You'd have to research back a little further for reporter live versions or even settle for the scene from the movie. What you used to reference the video was clipped together from several performances, most from an HBO special she did post "Physical". But, thanks for the post and review.

This was that smooth adult music 🎶 the adults would listen to when I was a kid. Now, most of them are gone 🥺 but this brings all those great togetherness moments back to life for me in my memories ❤️

Hi ace! I like this performance because it was so raw, it does kinda remind me of her previous performance at the VMA’s with like a virgin . The production wasn’t elaborate or anything over the top, ( here in 1989) and even though she had similar hair to her who’s that girl era ( tour) she looked different, maybe it was her attitude? Maybe she put on a lil extra muscle, idk she looked different. It was organic, and flashy but authentic and charming. I do believe it was unique for its time. I do like how she gives credit to her background dancers/ singers , whom she will go on to work with in subsequent tours and performances. After this 89 performance her live shows got way more theatrical, as the 1990’s ushered in. I am looking forward to seeing you react and experience the next world tour Blonde ambition 1990 to support her like a prayer album ( in fact it , the tour was to be named the Like a prayer tour, but Pepsi backed out on the sponsorship) No less, Blonde ambition has a nice ring to it. It’s arguably credited for revolutionizing pop concerts as we have now become accustomed to experiencing them, more like art installations, or theatre . Thanks for everything, and enjoy the beginning peak of her career that runs from 1990-2006 . Take care

Left Eye was supposed to be on the track but she was having issues with the direction of the FanMail album so she didn't record a verse. So the producer, Dallas Austin, decided to incorporate that computerized voice. He did it throughout the whole album.

A+ for sure. Relatively simple but each detail so meticulously executed. An important performance as it became a sketch for her next tour. It showcases Niki and Donna, her main backup singer/dancers for the next 10+ years. And it's the first time we see her vogue-ing.

Interesting...sounds like this is a glimpse into what's to come!

Love this track. Hearing it for the first time back in 1989, as an outro for this album, it was unexpected, subversive, witty, and, in retrospect, an introduction to Experimental Madonna, who we'd be hearing more from as the 90s progressed.
@AceM-Reacts9 күн бұрын
I agree. The concept and delivery of this track is creative and witty. It cleverly ties the album back to "Like a Prayer," solidifying it as the album’s defining moment.

Again, you nailed it. It’s an outro/bookend to the album - not meant to be a proper listenable song. You also nailed the humor in it all.
@AceM-Reacts9 күн бұрын
Thanks a lot! I appreciate you watching and leaving that comment. It was a clever close-up and a funny way to lighten the mood after all the heaviness of the album.
