Recent Census data informs us that 1/6 of us in the UK right now are not even born here. I’m sure that helps to explain the lower literacy rates…

I am badly dyslexic, and was told be my teachers in primary school that I would never amount to anything, kicked out of school at 14. I have now done both a doctorate and post doc at Oxford university. So for those in the same situation as I was, don’t believe them you can do it.

My mother taught 6 and 7 years old children in an infant school for 18 years with average class sizes of 32- 33 children. Obviously that was a lot of years ago. So about 600 children in all. No child ever left her class at the end of the year unable to read and write fluently. If a child was having difficulties, she gave that child extra tuition within the class. She said that if dyslexia exists, it must be a very rare condition. Poor teaching, on the other hand, was and is all too common.

Agreed, lazy teachers are in it because they can't think of anything else to do. Too much reliance on a cookie cutter curriculum also.

There is a field of thought out there that dyslexia does not exist and what we are seeing is simply late development in literacy. This is very controversial because there is so much talk and diagnosis of dyslexia.

my mum taught all 3 of us kids to read before we even started school. normal english class after listening to 2 or 3 kids struggling to read out line their dedicated part the teacher would say bartlett tell the class what happens in the story as far as you have got. i was by no means the brightest but could read better than anyone else. thanks mum.

how many school leavers leave school unable to read and write, no matter what is said its the fault of the school and its teachers every child starting primary school is eager to learn until somewhere along the way something happens and they are switched off ... its a scandal and if schools weren't so full of other cultures children unable to even speak english the teacher would have more time for our own

Got nothing to do with it, British kids don't want to learn. Lazy teachers and liberal parents too scared to discipline.

There's a great book published by a disillusioned math professor under the pseudonym "Professor Doom" called "Why Johnny can't Read, Write or do 'Rithmatic despite having a College Degree." If you can get it, give it a look before sending your kid to a US university.

He does people who are dyslexic a disservice , yes there are many degrees of dyslexia and am one, I get who and how, when went and add to stop brain from doing ever when know I will do it Just an example, and when I was school and I would have 12 spelling to learn over weekend I would spend 2 / 3 trying to remember them and mum would test me and i would only remember 3, plus lot more am also hypermobily with EDS connection tissue genetic syndrome and some specialists are linking dyslexia with autism and adhd, basically the brain is wired differently ask that me to rethink things about dyslexia
