People will complain and the farmers and ranchers cannot seem to win. People don't understand why you castrate, they think banding is inhumane, and they think cutting is inhumane. Let them complain. You are doing a wonderful job, farmer Tyler; you are considerate of your animals and you treat them well. And I do say, you maintain an upbeat attitude in spite of a few ornery cows.

Hats off to you Tyler. One man band is never easy, and at times takes twice as long to accomplish even the simplest tasks! I farmed and raised cattle by myself until my two boys became old enough to help out. I’m grateful for their help, but with their competitive nature and natural sibling rivalry, there are times where it still is just easier to do it yourself!😂😂

It's is extremely difficult. 3 days back I was pushing +-220 cow and calf combined its took me 6 hours to gather them into a 200 hectare camp. They where running in various camps totaling to about 4 thousand hectares. My mother was driving the bakkie/truck for me ask I was herding them. We've just came back 1 hour ago from fetching those we had missed that day. It was only 7. We're weaning and loading Oxen/Steers on Tuesday.

I really like the empathy you have for the animals. I believe that it makes them a lot happier and probably easier to handle. My uncle was a hobby herder and kept around 6-8 Charolais as a beef source for family and friends. His cattle were even more tame because of the treatment.👍

Another good video Tyler. Working 80 head of cows by yourself is like being a one legged man in an ass kicking competition! I work alone most of the time as well and band my bull calves when they are about a day old so that I don’t have to run them through a chute later. Your system seems to work well for you though and I think you are doing a good job and your cows look in great shape.

"A uncooperative day" My experience exactly with working cattle. I've tried to figure it out. I don't think there is a rhyme or reason to it. One day, they will move, stay calm, you get everything done in a matter of a couple of hours. Then another day. The very same course of events. Results in them getting worked up. Wanting to bolt and run. Like pulling teeth to do anything with them. Takes all day. My only advice is for you and any helpers to stay clam. Cattle since it. But not a instance fix by any means

Another great video. We all cowboy slightly different, have you considered giving the calves that you band a Tetanus shot. I have found that it is money well spent. We use a long range wormer also that you may want to consider. One opinion.

When I was a kid in Idaho during the 60s we castrated lots of calves by cutting, bands weren't really a thing then. The dogs lined up for their Rocky Mountain oyster treats.

One good man was all that was needed for these 80 head!!! I sure did notice that the fly situation is sooo much better than last year. Great to see the blocks working. I agree with you, banding is the way to go, especially while working alone. Your October heifer was not very cooperative today, shame on her😲. I let us hope that the last five cows do calve as the market is so bad. So sorry about the drone, sure hopeful that you are able to fix the drone as it is certainly a useful tool, for checking cattle, water and your videos. Some of that calling by the cows was due to overfull udders. They didn't want their babies so much as they needed their babies! LOL You did an amazing job. The cow trusted you with her calf so she didn't take you out. Edit: Sorry about the drone! If something had to crash - better it than you!

@@FoodwaysDistribution It is my understanding that udders that look like a dairy cow are uncommon among beef cattle. At least in my own observation, that is true. My uncle had a dairy farm so I am familiar with the huge size of udders dairy cattle can produce. If you look at 6:50 and at 23:05 you will see udders that are very full. Of course, udder size varies widely, just as breast size does on a woman, so I define very full as when the skin turns pink from holding everything in. Now on angus cross that can be hard to see, so there is something else about a how a very full udder moves - take my word on that - that indicates fullness. And remember just because the cow and calf were together a little time ago does not mean the calf had recently been drinking. I just know that when I watched this I saw a few of those udders that moved like mama would like some relief. I watched it again, but stopped at 24:00 as I have work to do. It was a sympathetic reaction from someone who knows. No of course none of the cows were in pain. Their full udders reminded them they had a solution for that, now where was that baby?
