An in-depth unsponsored review of the assembly, compatibility, and overall suitability of this VR treadmill
Sorry you may have to turn up the volume really high as this was my first time mixing audio. I think the level is pretty stable albeit low overall.
I forgot to mention that companion Gateway software has sensitivity sliders that can reduce a delay in movement in game. Also, with the 2.10 Gateway software came a Walker Leader board and step tracker.

VR has helped me lose a lot of weight too, Skitz! I haven't tried Supernatural yet, but using Beast Sage to make my own songs and downloading custom ones from fans helped me stay motivated for upper body workouts. I wish you well on hitting your next weight loss goal, so you can use the C2 to keep losing!

Hello Aucus, I'm glad to hear that you appreciated the review! It's funny that you mentioned the seat. Soon after I removed my seat, my pulley system (keeps the weight of the waist belt off you and allows it to float) broke. The pulley system break seems to happen a bit on the KatVR Discord. KatVR is sending me a replacement but until it arrives, I put the seat back on so when I get off the C2, the seat "cushions" the waist belt from hitting the bottom of its travel too hard.

Wow!!! Amazing video 👏 I wish I had this a week ago before I assembled mine, lol. I gave up screwing down many of the support feet but will now go back and fix that with some pliers. Best review of the C2 I've seen, fantastic job! I actually had mine in a box for over a month and was waiting for user reviews to come out as I was hesitant to keep it. Finally gave up on that and built it last weekend. First experience was awful... and I accidentally left the brakes on. Lol. 2nd was much better. I expect to like this more and more as I use it. The biggest detractors for me are the noise, and the feeling of being tied down. I miss being able to dodge backwards with my body! = ( Anyway, great review and info, thanks!!!!

Thank you so much Steve! Your opinion really means a lot to me as a fellow Kat Walker! Lots of early adopter challenges with this, and I was overwhelmed by a lot of it at first. I think 1-2 weeks of using it every day was when I started to get really comfortable with all the quirks of using it. As for the dodging, yeah I forget I can duck/crouch sometimes too and dethatching the seat helped me with my hesitation in that area. And remembering to flip the brake up makes it so much easier I found too lol. I have pretty much forgotten about the tied down feeling, but I also am used to wearing haptics gear. I think I spent over a day assembling it and was then too tired to play until the next day.
@EndersVRcade
@EndersVRcade Жыл бұрын
Oh and regarding the tied down feeling- while the VR Wire II tether helps with the G2's cable, I feel a lot less encumbered with the Quest 2 wireless when doing a ton of turns.

@@EndersVRcade I hear ya! I assembled it in chunks over two days. I didn't even try it for a couple days after that. I did notice that the seat does inhibit my ability to crouch, which is a bummer. I do miss being able to bend backwards to dodge. Not that I have a huge range anyway, but a couple of inches backwards has dodged many a blade! Like what you stated in this video or another, I decided I needed this for fitness purposes. I can have fun in VR and move my body more. I find walking in my neighborhood not so interesting as the scenery doesn't change. It's worth the little bit of bendy movement I have to give up. I'm really interested in adding haptics to the mix. I've almost purchased the X40 many times. At this point I might wait a bit longer to see the other options come to fruition. I'm certainly tempted by wireless headsets for this and my YawVR2 (when that arrives someday!). That said, I use the Pimax 8KX as my main HMD and I just can't give up that FOV! ; )

I was really excited about the 12k, and still am, but with the Portal announcement, I’m afraid they might be doing too much all at once, so I wanna wait and see for third-party reviews. However, the 12k would be my ideal headset I think. I really want that wireless with amazing field of view too. The Owo “haptic” shirt could be a lot less sweaty/cumbersome to wear too.

Great video! By far the most useful review of the Kat Walk C2 out there! I do have one question: when you were talking about variable walk/run speed games, you mentioned “Pavlov and others”. Can you tell me what the “others” are? It seems to me that variable speed would be much more immersive and better for exercise as well, but I can’t find an easy way to search for games with that specific feature, and I haven’t had much experience yet. I have my kat walk c2+ together and awaiting my new gaming PC that will be here in a couple of days to get it going.

My thoughts on how to use this during a first person shooter (and any game where I'm not using the kat walk to move): Still use the joystick for movement, but stay hooked into the kat walk in order to stay in place in my physical room, thus avoiding the very real issue of running up against the virtual barrier, which has gotten me killed plenty of times in contractors.
@EndersVRcade
@EndersVRcade Жыл бұрын
Yeah if I want to play my most competitively/my best I wouldn't use the C2. I just like it for the immersiveness and workout in shooters. Also (advanced maneuver/at your own risk) I don't use a guardian/virtual walls even without the C2 and play with a mat in socks or barefoot so I can feel when I'm stepping out of my play space.

@EndersVRcade

Yes I use free software called LIV that essentially creates a third person in game camera that follows your movement by tracking your VR controllers and moves the camera accordingly (and maybe the headset too but not sure). It only works with their list of supported games (the game developer has to implement it on their end) unfortunately or I would use it for all my videos.

Sorry if there is an obvious answer to this question, but do the shoes also double as a foot tracker and the torso strap for torso tracking (for full body tracking for example)? I tried looking at their website, but wasn't able to find any information on it. I would guess that there won't be any, so I've already bought some vive trackers ahead of time just in case.
@EndersVRcade
@EndersVRcade Жыл бұрын
That’s a great question. I was wondering that myself before I got mine. So short answer is that no the shoes don’t double as foot trackers, and the waist belt tracks direction only. If you look up my Dragon Fist or Blade & Sorcery/Lightsaber video, you can see( or maybe you already saw) that I do have vive foot trackers on for those games. Think of the shoe trackers as a mouse on your desktop. It moves forward/backward/Y and left/rightX but not up/down/Z (or when you do lift your mouse off your desk, it stops tracking). So it will allow you to move through your game but for things like kicks or vertical avatar tracking, that’s where you need the Vive trackers. Also, this might only be me, but for blade and sorcery, I couldn’t get more than two trackers to work, so without the waist tracker in that game movement was a bit off, but that might’ve been the mods I was using for that game as well.

Hi Lee. After a month I lost about 4 pounds of using the C2 every other day for about an hour to an hour and a half. I use an Apple Watch and track calories burned that way although the watch doesn't entirely understand some workouts. For example, if I select Elliptical and stop walking to snipe or manage my inventory in game, I keep getting a vibration from the watch asking if I'm finished my work out even after dismissing the prompt. "Open workout" on the watch solves that issue, but it's probably less accurate at measuring calories burned. Fortunately the Kat's Gateway software does have a calorie burned/steps walked (in kilometers just an FYI for Americans). I forgot to mention the Gateway fitness app because this is my longest video yet, and it came as a more recent update. But the Gateway info doesn't go to the watch exercise app. I did start to use the Pulsoid Watch app to overlay my heartrate in the Blade and Sorcery video, and I think, the Pavlov one. If you look up Pulsoid, they list other devices that work with their free software.

For the vast majority of games, you will need to be using a PC and if you want to use without a PC, you will need to buy a the Nexus accessory but it only works with the few games Kat lists supported for that device. I have a review of the Kat Nexus too. However, my Nexus review is fairly out of date now that Kat changed a lot of how it works.

No Nexus absolutely does not just work with every game. It only works with the games they list as supported specifically for quest standalone. Furthermore updates to the games or Meta OS can break compatibility without notice. The Nexus is a nice thing to have in addition to PCVR play with the C2/Core but I do not recommend buying a treadmill just for standalone play with the Nexus.

Hey man. Can you tell me if the Kat Walk reduces motion sickness when playing games where you need to walk and go up/down stairs? I really want to play Skyrim VR but I am very sensitive to motion sickness. I'm wondering if I should buy Kat Walk C2 for that.
@EndersVRcade
@EndersVRcade Жыл бұрын
Hi Satisfied, this is a great question that is unfortunately hard to answer because motion sickness is so individual. I haven’t had any since I first started VR a few years ago (with exception of the rare game where I get under 40 fps), and I only have had the KatWalk for the last 6 months. Therefore I don’t want to promise it will help and have you be upset with me if it doesn’t help. However, my general understanding of motivation sickness is that is occurs due to your brain being confused because it sees movement your body doesn’t create, so it should help in theory. You might consider trying the Loco S for a LOT less money to see if that helps before investing in a full C2 as I think the effect on motion sickness is very similar. I have a three part review of it on my channel. (For PCVR like Skyrim only, you would want to watch Part 1.

Do you have any opinion on the Kat Loco S? I don't think I really have enough room for the Katwalk because I got addicted to the VR app Holofit and bought a bike, elliptical and rowing machine for my VR room, lol. Anyway... I have the Cybershoes but have barely used them. I thought maybe the Loco S would be a better version of that. Obviously not as cool as the Katwalk but maybe decent... There's nothing like moving your body in VR. Even using exercise machines in VR is pretty addictive.

Thanks for this great review. I did put C2 PLUS a 1000 times into the shopping cart but always hesitated to push the final checkout button. Shipping got a bit cheaper bis is till 370 US$ to GER. Also, i record my content with the Index microphone which is very sensitive. I wonder if the index picks up the feet movement sound of the C2 Plus. So, even tho I would describe myself as an enthusiast, I´m still hesitating.
@EndersVRcade
@EndersVRcade Жыл бұрын
I’m glad to hear you appreciated the review MR Traveler. I have more gameplay footage/reviews with the C2+ on my channel if that helps make your decision. With the Velcro on the shoes modification I made, online players say they can hear my shoes moving a little if they are listening carefully and I’m not talking with my Quest 2 and Reverb G2 but my understanding is the Index has the best HMD microphone on the market, so they could be more of an issue for you. I just set my HMD mic to “push to talk” if I’m worried about giving away my position in competitive games (when possible) or off. If you’re not an enthusiast, I can’t say this is a must buy. I’d recommend trying (although I haven’t bought myself, I almost did) the Kat Walk Loco S for a less than a tenth the price of a C2. That way you can try out the walking feature, granted only in place, at a relatively low risk to see if you would utilize it enough to buy the C2. Also having the same headphones as the index on my G2, I can tell you you will be able to hear your own footsteps with the C2. Although once I have sound effects or music going, I don’t notice the noise anymore.

Do you feel that Kat Walk 2 feels like actual walking in VR after you've got used to it for a month? Do you forget that you are on a tread mill and actually walking in the game? Or does it still feel more like an addon like bhaptics gear. I got the same vest and arm bhaptics thingies as you and although it's cool and all it feels more like I added haptics to a gamepad and my brain still interprets as vibrations on my body. Half the time I don't put my bhaptics gear on because although it makes things better it's not life changing enough, just trying to figure out if this is going to be the same thing.
@EndersVRcade
@EndersVRcade Жыл бұрын
Hi Alex. After closer to two months of using it every other day for an hour or more, I would say it still feels like a Nordic Track/Elliptical than walking normally; however, it does feel immersive as though I am walking through a game world - for the most part. Since you have bHaptics gear, you know how some aspects of wearing the gear will always break immersion (like having to adjust arm bHaptic that doesn't stay in place or say the vest feels hot and you now remember all the gear you are wearing)? Same principle applies to the C2. For example, it feels fluid walking up or down stairs so if I don't over think it (like the motion/movement feels natural vs. "I wish my feet actually raised more to climb the stairs of felt heavier) than it feels immersive enough to me. Or like how with say the arm haptics, recoil doesn't feel like gun recoil precisely but it does feel neat/forceful. Also, the C2 is going to perform better in some games than others (like having to push the run button on your controller in some games). Does that make sense?

Kind of. I mean the Vive foot trackers are tracked using laser base stations, so I could see that in a newer version of a cat walk down the road and some use an app called natural locomotion, which is free that tracks your arm swings, and I think can even map your arm swings to activate a jump feature so you don’t have to press a button with the Kat. Hello Daniel and thank you for watching. I live in an apartment and have neighbors too but only above me, and they don't complain. I don't play early morning or late at night and my C2+ sits on foam flooring panels with sound deadening panels above it on the ceiling. You can see my setup with my video "My Mixed Reality Workflow and VRcade Upgrades" if you haven't already which also includes a video from a Kat VR discorder who put foam under the base to reduce noise. I recommend joining the Kat VR Discord and browsing the apartments-and-noise channel to see what others who live with downstairs neighbors have to say.

@EndersVRcade
@EndersVRcade Жыл бұрын
I would be happy to Jacob. If there are certain aspects you want me to address, be sure to let me know. As for me in general, I get bored with gym cardio machines, and work out much longer with the C2- especially with games with big environments. For VR Chat, Into the Radius, and others I need to try with the C2 still like Fallout and Skyrim, I will walk for up to two and a half hours versus just 30 minutes on an elliptical. For higher intensity games (Dragon Fist VR Kung Fu being the most demanding with Blade & Sorcery in second so far), I will work out less time but burn a lot more calories and be drenched in sweat. With the C2 you are using your legs obviously as well as your core to lean into the belt and your arms for game play. With typical VR, it's mainly just your arms, so you aren't getting a full body workout. There is also a step tracker with the C2 software now.

I have the original Katwalk C and my go-to games are the Serious Sam games. Those are SO FUN and such high intensity. You will absolutely get you sweating. These are the most high intensity shooters I have and with my headset (I have the Varjo Aero) , it looks really good. You constantly sprint around the battlefield during each fight. The decoupled movement works great so you run in one direction and shoot to the side. I have been sweating and breathing heavy after playing those games more than anything else I have.

You can turn off the walk animation in VRChat if you're using full body tracking with the treadmill. You just have to be a little more careful to walk in a more natural way than you have to using the treadmill if you want it not to look weird to other people. I'm still trying to come up with a solution to wearing the treadmill shoes with the bhaptics feet haptics. I have bluetooth problems too sometimes. I only run two lighthouses though as four seems overkill for playing from a fixed location on the treadmill.
@EndersVRcade
@EndersVRcade Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Ben. I saw that option, but wasn't sure about the trade-offs of turning it off. As you said, I wonder how odd it looks without the animation walk effect. Which do you prefer? I would be interested to know if you play regularly as I'm very much a casual with that game. I really like the mounts I found for the trackers with the C2 shoes. Did you check out the link I have listed in the video description? I may try turning off a couple lighthouses, thanks for that idea!
@benpielstick
@benpielstick Жыл бұрын
I prefer leaving the animation off because it creates a disconnect between how my legs are moving and how I see my avatar's legs move. I set up a mirror to watch myself walk and work on how I take steps to make it not look too weird, and I think it looks ok. The biggest disadvantage for me is that people tend to run around a lot in VRChat and you can't fall back to thumbstick movement without your avatar sliding around if your automatic walk animation is turned off. It makes me very aware of how unrealistic movement is when there is no cost to it in games. Those shoe mounts look fine for trackers but I don't think they would work for the bHaptics Tactosy feet haptics.

Speaking of the bottom cover, what I would do cause I noticed I couldn't thread I didn't use the washers and I would thread through the bottom first to make sure the threads didn't have paint thru it to make it hard to catch then I would go over the top and crank them down and bend then a little with the in box screw then remove the screw and attach to the slide mill. Wouldn't crank down to much just enough I'd just start to see it bend and it would slide on just fine once I attached them. Made it so much easier and they all attached just fine after this. No I haven’t tried the Omni One. I do like that it can be tilted and rolled and how it appears to have greater horizontal movement (via the flexible arm), I think its downsides out weigh those advantages. It’s much more expensive and is designed around the Pic headset it includes and is focused on being a standalone system which limits it’s game library to what Virtuix supports and (last I checked) it supports very few PCVR games. It strikes me as more of an arcade focused device than a home/consumer one. KZbinr Nathie covers this well on his recent review to Virtuix's headquarters, so you might want to see what he thought.

Hi, I’m not sure I understand exactly what your question is. I’m guessing you’re asking if you can play without the nexus? Yes you can as long as you have a PC. For example, I don’t have the Nexus. You only need the Nexus for using the C2 without a PC. Not sure what Gunraiders is either- is it one of the free games included with the C2 via PC software? I looked up Gunraiders on KZbin, and I THINK it should work with the C2. @EndersVRcade
@EndersVRcade Жыл бұрын
Hello Charlie, this might be a little beyond my level of technological understanding, but I am fairly confident that you cannot do what you are proposing. I think the Loco S uses Inertia Movement Units (or IMUs which generally use accelerometers, gyroscopes, and sometimes magnetometers) where as the C2 uses (essentially) the little red lasers you see on the underside of a mouse to visually track movement over the C2 surface, so they are not compatible at all. I think the C1 might use the same underlying technology as the Loco S (IMUs) but the sensors are different in shape and presumably how they are tracked. Also, I think the Loco S tracks the frequency of your ankle sensors moving up and down but the C2 surface is curved and to slide your feet over it which would might not trigger a “step” in the Loco S algorithm.

It might work, and I stress I am not an expert on how this technology works. Hi DragonCity, yeah getting the bolts to go in was really tough. I feel that C2 is well worth the money - as long as you use it like all exercise equipment. I have t tried HLA with it yet but there are others on the Kat Discord who use a mod called “Always Sprinting” or “Always Running” that I hear helps too but adjusting walk speed in Gateway like you said helps in other games I notice too. I haven’t tried Hard Bullet but I’ve had direction issues like that where nothing seems to fix it except a full computer restart for reasons I don’t understand. That is odd that the seat doesn’t go back up automatically as mine won’t stay down. Maybe reach out to Kat VR Support on email or Discord because I’m not sure why. Maybe a piece is missing like a spring that makes it raise up. They are good about replacing missing/broken parts they just can take awhile to get back if you are talking to their China office.
