Ginault makes a great watch. I did a video comparing it to my Submariner a little while back and it stands up to it pretty nicely. The Submariner, it's better without a doubt, but for someone that wants something similar for a fraction of the price I'd recommend the Ginault without hesitation.

Would these be for 700-800 usd, they could be called unbeatable, but for 1200 there still is a lot to get from traditional well established brands, but given the specific sub homage status, these are at the top of the food chain with Davosa, Steinhart in my opinion. The first is around or less the price the Ginault. The second is half the price.

As usual very good review Jody!...., BUT why would anyone purchase a Ginault for $1,300 when there are so many offerings by other exceptional microbrands for around half or more of Ginault’s retail price (Helson, Borialis, Zelos and Axios just to name a few). Unless someone is looking for an exact copy (homage) to the Rolex Submariner (and don’t want to dish out $10K for one), I cannot see anyone spending that much money, heck anyone wanting a Ginault, just go to eBay there are numerous offerings and people can save at least 40% or more on a pre-owned timepiece, or check the watch forums for people looking to swap or part exchange.

Mr Jodi - hopefully you see this question! I also purchased this Ginault Ocean Rover but I chose the blue lume. I LOVE THIS WATCH. I’ve had it for a year now and wear it every day 24/7. I’m so torn about the new ceramic version. I’ve read they changed the bezel ratcheting mechanism to similar as new subs and a Swiss movement. They have no pictures or videos up yet and I was sent a special offer since I’m an existing customer but haven’t bit yet. ARE YOU GOING TO GET YOUR HANDS ON ONE AND REVIEW IT?? PLEASE CONSIDER.

I just placed my order today. I went for the 181070LSILN which is the no date, white markers/blue lume version. I wasn’t even looking for a homage watch. I was actually just looking for good micro brands that are based here in America and that was how I found them. As soon as I saw the Ocean Rover, I wanted one right away. After learning more about it, I wanted one even more. I had a great conversation with John and finally pulled the trigger today. I cannot wait to get it. I love that I can get a watch of outstanding quality made by an American company at a great price. Don’t get me wrong, I love Swiss and German watches but it’s great that there is an awesome company out there like Ginault building quality pieces here in America. There are a whole lot of companies producing shoddy replicas but very few companies making excellent homages. I for one cannot wait to see what they do with a totally original design.

Perhaps you're right. However, I believe the Ocean Rover was around 5 years in the making so I wouldn't be surprised if they have something new in the works. Either way, I think they're doing a great job. I think that a lot of people really respect their work but don't really respect them as a company just because some people instantly recoil from anything having to do with homages for some reason. That's a bit silly to me but people are entitled to their opinions. Although, I think that a lot of those people would find themselves very interested if Ginault ever did decide to release a fully original piece because they've shown that they have what it takes to produce very well made and well finished watches. If Ginault decides not to create any original designs, I wouldn't really hold it against them, even though it is something that I'd really love to see. We'll just have to wait and see what happens. I have no doubt that they could come up with a stunning design and execute it every bit as well as they have with the OR.

I have a Steinhart OVM, 2 Ocean Rovers, and a few Rolex Subs. In my opinion the OMV is great value for the price but when compared to the Subs, it's lacking the quality. The Ocean Rover comes very very close to the Subs. The build, the finish, the craftsmanship is simply amazing. But ultimately it's up to you to decide whether that kind of improvement is worth the $$.

When you have the chance get your hands on the Ocean Rover, it will change your mind about what a Sub homage means. There is one on sale at the Ginault Watch Club FB group for $800 no date version.

Very nice. I think what you have is one of the best versions they have.. or will have as it is at this time. I really appreciate the attention to details such as the date wheel. And, this is an extra cost to get a custom matching date wheel that makes or breaks a watch's design. For me if I were in the market for a Ginault, this would be a very important detail that is all too often overlooked and a major point to seal the deal for me. The lume and general look of the watch is vintage patina. But, so many others have tried this but always neglect having a matching date wheel with patina and simply reuse a bright white date wheel. That kills it for me when all has that aged look and the date wheel is brand spanking white. What's up with that? The 1 niggle I had with a Steinhart Ocean One Dual-Time was the date wheel was still bright white while the rest had an aged look to the lume, dial and even the aluminum pepsi insert. Not the problem and no dischord with the overall vintage look here in your new Ginault watch. They only other watch I know of that has a matching patina look to the date wheel is the Tissot Janeiro with that lovely vintage inspired gilt dial. FYI, I also can't stand a watch that is supposed to also look rustic or vintage and they use very new looking lume that has that green tint to it. An issue which I noticed after the fact with a Steinhart Ocean One Bronze. Sure, there are MANY submariner homages and most do a fantastic job at it.. I personally like what Steinhart was doing especially with the newer 39mm case size. BUT, Ginault really is the very best submariner homage. The fact they got the case proportions spot on and the bracelet and clasp wins by itself alone. I don't think the asking price is ridiculous at all considering the level of quality and near 1:1 reproduction of a Rolex Submariner from case to bracelet. I can't think of any other brand that makes the case scale and detail and especially the bracelet with glide-lock system near exactly like a Rolex as Ginault has done. I think the mentality and comparison to this watch and others is misplaced. For the price, it is balanced and regulated to well within COSC standards without need an official COSC certification. The closest you could feel to own a Rolex Submariner while keeping very far from Rolex Submariner prices. The only other microbrand I feel comes close to the design, finish and performance level of the Ginault is Monta.. .which cost roughly the same if not a hair more just shy of $2k (if not pre-ordered with discount). The question to you is are owning 2 Ginault dive watches just fine or do you feel there is an unnecessary overlap or one model shines more than the other?

Congrads on the this beautiful piece. I love Ginault's rendition of the classic Mil-Sub that its paying tribute to. I have both the 6 digit Sub with the "supercase" and the classic 5 digit Sub. I still prefer the 5 digit mid-case design (thinner lugs) Proportion wise and visually, its golden. The beefed up supercase makes the dial look smaller and compressed.

Fantastic review! I own a a Rolex two tone bluesy which I truly enjoy (narrow lugs) and this would be a wonderful daily alternative; wear everywhere with no concern for damage, robbery, expensive maintenance (robbery) or other Rolex induced worries. The subs just work everywhere and for all occasions making them possibly the best universal watch around. That said you mention an enamel dial? I believe you meant lacquered dial? Can’t imagine it has an enameled dial at its price point. Whatever it may replace my aging daily wear Tag Heuer Carrera Chronograph auto (17 years on wrist) and whilst still running flawlessly I’m thinking its time for a change. Go this way but once and we’re dead a long time. Thank you for an interesting and entertaining 2018, looking forward to what 2019 brings to your collection. Cheers.

Just the other day I bought a new car, it didn't have a cigarette lighter or ash tray. I was delighted. I felt they had continued to be standard way beyond the point where they were a common requirement. As it is with the date function on a watch. When they first appeared it was a break through innovation and of course any watch hoping to sell well had to have it. That time has long passed and I refuse to buy any watch with a date function. So no Royal Oak for me but I can content myself with a no date Sub. Luckily I have normal sized wrists and the lugs are just fine.

I had the opportunity to buy a brand new Rolex Sub Date last month and my reaction was the same, those lugs are awkward. I’m sure the next iteration will see them slimmed down a little. Having said that I wouldn’t hesitate getting a Hulk as it will gain value undoubtedly when discontinued. Enjoy the Ginault, I’m sure eventually you’ll buy the Tudor Black Bay 58 or a Sub ;-)

The rolex in the 1950s was $130 US dollars, it should cost $1400.00 now not $7500.00. I think the Ginault is the way to get a very well made watch. The Ginualt reminds me of the Tudor Black bay , only it costs $2000.00 less

Rolex Subs definitely has its place in horology; quality is superb. But at the same time, a lot of the 8k we paid for the Rolex Sub went towards sustaining their brand image and marketing rather than towards watch making and watch production. Ginault has demonstrated that Rolex level of quality is attainable at the 1k price range.

Steve Schuh I have asked them if they did a version with the cyclops with the blue lume instead of the green. I just think the blue looks better than the green.

I think they are keen to introduce new models to the line up, so they might consider it, with a six week wait.

Regarding the Oris 65 - who in the right mind would do a diver with no crown guards? I have an Oris Williams (I know it's not a diver) with no crown guards and the sharp edges of the crown are rubbing against my wrist in a very unpleasant way so I can't wear it for more than a day at a time.
